The production of focused ion beams for surface and gas-phase collision studies

Factors limiting the performance of practical ion beam systems are discussed and include momentum dispersion, instabilities, space-charge repulsion and extraction optics. An approach to overall design is illustrated by an accelerator system employing low energy extraction and used for a range of working conditions and ion species.
