Abstract: | Bowel diseases (appendicitis, diverticulitis and colon cancer) in South African whites and populations of prosperous Western countries are similar. Among rural South African blacks with a traditional lifestyle these diseases are very uncommon or almost unknown. A study was undertaken to measure stool weight and faecal pH in South African urban blacks and whites. There was no difference in stool weight, but the faecal pH was significantly higher in whites (P = 0.002). |
