Abstract: | The elastic-plastic response of a thick spherical shell subjected to thermal loading is predicted by three independent numerical analyses. Heat radiation from the inner face of a sufficiently large hollow cylinder is applied to an initially unloaded hollow sphere having a thickness equal to the inner radius of the sphere. Solutions obtained by a finite difference program and two independent finite element programs compare well with an exact elastic solution before yielding occurs. The post yield analyses of the three programs follow a consistent pattern. |
