Abstract:The complete prediction of ultimate load-carrying capacity of welded box section members subjected to local plate buckling has still not established in the current GB 50017-2003 Code for Design of Steel Structure. This paper presents an accurate analysis of ultimate load-carrying capacity of locally buckled box section stub columns under axial load, pure moment and their combination, respectively. A finite shell element is employed to exactly simulate the sectional geometric shape and boundary condition, with incorporation of plate large displacement and elastic-plastic material. Based on numbers of numerical results, three simplified design formulas are respectively proposed to calculate the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the box section stub columns under the three load conditions mentioned above.
