Abstract: | Modern techniques have substantially improved the outcome of surgical therapy for reflux. Surgery, therefore, should not be considered a method of last resort but instead a reasonable alternative to treat patients with abnormal reflux. Adequate preoperative staging of the disease helps design the most appropriate operation. Minimally invasive techniques improve exposure and enhance recovery. Control of symptoms is achieved in the great majority of patients, and complications are minimal if the operation is performed following basic principles of sound operative technique. |
