Abstract:In this article, a series of epoxy composites consisting of multilayered ultra-fine glass fiber felts (GFFs) were produced by a hand lay-up process. The incorporation of GFFs greatly enhances the sound-absorption and sound-insulation properties of epoxy composites. It can be mainly attributed to great numbers of voids introduced into the matrix and the increasing interfacial area between glass fiber and epoxy resin, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy results. Furthermore, the thermal insulation performance of epoxy/glass fiber felt (EP/GFF) composites is continuously improved with the growing GFF layer, and meanwhile EP/GFF composites exhibit the satisfactory mechanical property. Such novel EP/GFF composites can serve as promising structural, heat-insulated, and soundproof materials in many multifunctional systems including buildings, aircrafts, constructions, vehicles, etc. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
