Abstract:As an important component of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), gas diffusion layer (GDL) supplies gas, electron and water transport pathway for hydrogen/oxygen electrochemical reaction. The microporous layer of the GDL is constructed by active carbon and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). As a result, the loading of active carbon and PTFE have much important influence on the thickness, pore structure and electron conductivity of the microporous layer and the GDL. The current review summarizes the effects of carbon black and PTFE loading on layer, The results demonstrate that the carbon black and PTFE loading depend on the operating condition of the PEM fuel cell. Thus, it is black and PTFE loading based on the application of the fuel cells.
