Crystal field splitting and anomalous thermal expansion in YbVO4

Abstract:We have investigated the Yb3+ crystal-field-level structure in YbVO4 using inelastic magnetic neutron-scattering measurements and crystal-field model calculations. We determined the temperature dependence of the a and c lattice parameters of the tetragonal unit cell by neutron diffraction and observed a minimum at ca. 120 K in the c lattice parameter. This anomaly in the thermal expansion is interpreted as arising from a coupling of the anisotropic low-lying crystal-field states of the Yb3+ ions and the crystal lattice at low temperatures.
