Planning, Design and Construction of the Cable-stayed Roof at Tsing Yi Complex, Hong kong Special Administration Region

This landmark building evolves from developing the use of tension structures as roof elements, which becomes part of the design. The architectural form, articulated by the structures, creates a unique profile and sheltered public spaces. Whilst normally the work of the structural engineers is concealed in the traditional false ceiling and cladding system, the architects and engineers collaborate in this project to deliberately express the structural form of the tension roof structures. This cable-stayed system is the first of its kind in Hong Kong to carry the large span roof of a building. The canopies in steel, glass, and fabric spanning over public spaces, successfully compliment the overall concept. The completed complex supplements the nearby residential developments, which together form a very attractive local area to the public. This paper describes the planning, design and construction of the cable-stayed roof system over the indoor games hall of the Tsing Yi complex at Tsing Yi town centre, Area 2, Tsing Yi, New Territory, Hong Kong Special Administration Region.
