Abstract:A comparison has been made between the off-line contact fatigue lives of Iron Ox 55 tractor's axle shaft gears treated by surface thin case softening process (STCSP) and by conventional carburizing process (CCP) respectively. The results show that the off-line contact fatigue lives of the gears treated by STCSP are about 1. 63 to 6. 72 times as those of CCP treated ones, and the contact fatigue life is directly proportional to the amount of retained austenite in the case. In addition, fracture morphology has been studied.
