A sampling monitor for applications programs

Periodic location counter sampling is a well-known technique for conducting performance measurements on operating systems. It is also extremely useful for applications programs. This paper describes a set of interface conventions for such a monitor. SPY, a monitor obeying these conventions, has been implemented on three different computers.
