| Abstract: | This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive summary of results on the following topics relating to crack kinking and curving: (a) Stress intensity factors for kinked cracks under combined loading; (b) applicability of Irwin's energy-release rate formula to kinked cracks; and (c) reasons behind crack kinking and curving. It is assumed throughout that the surfaces of the cracks do not come into contact. |
