The future of ecological evaluation for land use planning: the case OF Belgium

The paper is essentially a supplement and an up‐to‐date extension to earlier papers on ecological evaluation for planning purposes. Scientific, strategic and political objections against ecological evaluation in its present shape are discussed. Some resolving measures for the controversy over this technique are presented. Recent Belgian developments in the field are reviewed in the context of the coming post‐industrial society. Especially, public participation and the potential improvements brought about by the introduction of an environmental impact assessment procedure are discussed.
