Abstract: | Should the master's degree be a terminal degree of a steppingstone to the doctorate? The question of specialization at this level also enters the picture. Data from published research of other investigators indicate that "for each field in which the Master's is offered in both 1951-52 and in 1961-62 not only has the percentage of schools offering it sharply decreased but also… the absolute number is less." As compared with 1951, the 1961 figures "show that Masters' in the major fields of psychology are offered in fewer schools today, and a large number offer no Master's at all… . The number and percentages of schools offering no Master's degrees in psychology has more than tripled in the ten-year period." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) |
