Large-scale applications of superconducting coils |
| |
Abstract: | Superconducting coils have been utilized in a broad range of applications which continues to expand. Initially, they were used for small physics experiments in the laboratory. More recent applications involve superconducting coils on a scale that would have been unrealistic only a few years ago. This paper is concerned with some of these applications. After a brief review of the main characteristics of superconductors and superconducting windings in general, specific applications are discussed. These include high-energy physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, inductive energy storage, and levitation of high-speed ground vehicles. Photographs and illustrations are included to describe some of the existing systems as well as some systems which are presently conceptual in nature. |
