Abstract: | A microscopic approach based on the use of action-angle variables in quantum statistics is employed to study the flow of liquid helium II through a cylindrical channel of diameterd. It is found that for c/d1, where c is the coherence length of the system, the superfluid critical velocityvc d–1/2. For a certain range ofd, this relationship is in closer agreement with experiment than the one based on semiclassical considerations involving quantized vortices. |
