Gigi Chang Displaying Design and Designing Display:

This article discusses the relationship between the exhibition design and content of an exhibition. Citing my personal experience ＂China Design Now＂ exhibition at the V＆A, I will outline the process of exhibition design, from selection of the designer to the opening of the exhibition working on The article will discuss how the exhibition narrative morphs around the spatial design scheme and vice versa-detailing how ends the result is a sublimation of the ideas of the curators and the designers. The article will also look at the physical display of the objects and how that impacts on the viewing experience and will include exploration of the structures that the objects are displayed on as well as the grouping of such structures in the physical space of the gallery. The aim of this essay is to tease out the complex but harmonious relationships between exhibition narrative, exhibition objects and the spatial design, making clear the level of meticulous thinking behind the presentation of an exhibition, and how that is paramount to the effective transmission of the themes and key messages of any exhibition. I hope to establish that exhibition design is especially vital to the display of historical and contemporary design objects, and point out the differences with the display of fine art work （ often in a white cube space ）.
