Review of Smoking for two: Cigarettes and pregnancy.

Abstract:Reviews the book, Smoking for Two: Cigarettes and Pregnancy by Peter A. Fried and Harry Oxorn (1980). In Smoking for Two. Peter Fried, a Professor of Psychology at Carleton University, and Harry Oxorn, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa, document what is known and not known about the consequences of smoking during pregnancy. Topics which are discussed include: 1) epidemiology of smoking, particularly among women of reproductive age, 2) involuntary smoking, 3) constituents of smoke and effects on mother and fetus, 4) smoking and maternal weight gain, 5) smoking and the function of the placenta, 6) smoking and complications during pregnancy, 7) smoking and infant birth weight, 8) smoking and the newborn, 9) smoking and nursing, 10) long-term effects of smoking during pregnancy, and 11) suggestions for pregnant women who are trying to quit.
