Abstract:This paper makes a study on ecostratigraphy of early Ordovician Tremadocian organic reef in middle Yangtze river area. Three community zones and two community formations have been established based on the study of the organic reef, namely Batostoma Community zone, Calathium-Bluegreen algae Community Zone, Archaeoscyphia Community zone and Calathium-Bluegreen algae-Archaeoscyphia Community Formation and Batostoma (1) Calathium-Bluegreen algae-Archaeoscyphia-Batostoma (2) Community Formation. The authors demonstrate that the precision of ecostratigraphic subdivision and correlation is higher than that of biostratigraphic and rock stratigraphic subdivision and correlation based on the study of ecostratigraphic in contrast to biostratigraphic and rock stratigraphy of Tremadocian organic reef in middle Yangtze river area. A system for the classification of ecostratigraphic units is suggested in this paper and its application is demonstrated also.
