Abstract: | A computer algorithm originally developed for predicting the hardenability of low alloy steels has been adapted to forecast the microstructural development in weld heat-affected zones (HAZ). This algorithm simulates the kinetics of the decomposition of austenite to its various daughter products. When combined with a suitable model of the heat transfer in weld HAZ's, it provides a useful tool to predict the resultant microstructure. Thus, it allows one to optimize welding process parameters to achieve the best microstructure possible. |
