The intelligent antenna. A smart solution to improved performance

The paper summarises a number of applications where antenna characteristics are made to adapt dynamically to the environment. Somewhat surprisingly, perhaps, it is broadcasting and telecommunications rather than the military domain that has the most wide-ranging examples in common use. Most systems at present are, however, rule-based rather than true expert systems. New developments which include the application of heuristic reasoning and learning from past experience in such systems are bringing closer the concept of the intelligent antenna.
