The Meaning of Wang Shu's Award

The 2012 Laureate for the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Wang Shu is the personage of the145th edition of Architectural Worlds. The AW interview with Wang Shu reveals an artisangrappling with the philosophical and practical consequences that world recognition hasbrought to him personally and to contemporary Chinese architecture more generally. From1990-1998, Wang Shu worked with ordinary craftsmen, learning to construct buildings anddeveloping perspective on traditional architecture through hands-on experience. His decisionto leave the expertise and modernity of the city was deliberate and reflected a convictionthat there was much to be learned in China’s rural areas, where tradition still shaped buildingdesign, the choice of construction materials, and the relationship between a building and itsnatural location. Since then, Wang Shu has used insights and values from that seminal timeto create a distinct architectural style that evoke the past, without making direct referencesto history. Consequently, by invoking traditional gardens as particular negotiation of therelationship between nature and culture, tradition and the contemporary, Wang Shu’s worksnot only actualize an attitude toward and valuation of the function of tradition in contemporaryarchitecture, but also present a challenge to Chinese architects and urban planners – whereare you building and why?
