| Abstract: | Adult male and female Japanese quail were functionally castrated by exposure to a short photoperiod and then injected with either estradiole benzoate (EB) or testosterone propionate (TP). Females injected with EB (n = 24) exhibited normal sexual receptivity again but displayed no male courtship behavior. Males injected with EB (n = 10) showed both male and female copulatory patterns. Females injected with TP (n = 14) showed little sexual behavior of any sort, while males injected with TP (n = 10) displayed male sexual behavior. The male quail is thus more bisexual than the female. In contrast with mammalian species, the female is more bisexual.
