Abstract: | Honeycombs are often used as cores in sandwich panels. The honeycomb cores carry the normal and shear loads in the surfaces perpendicular to the axis of the hexagonal prisms. Honeycombs are particular strong in this out-of-plane direction. In this paper, the collapse behaviour under both shear and simple compression in the out-of-plane direction is analyzed. Buckling, debonding and fracture are identified as possible collapse mechanisms. The modelling work is checked by extensive experiments on a wide range of Nomex honeycombs. Good agreements are found between the model and the data. |
