Abstract:A liquid crystalline ionomer(LCI) was synthesized by use of an interfacial condensation reaction from hexanedioic acid,4,4′-hydroxybiphenyl and 4-hydroxyazobenzenesulfonic acid.The LCI was blended with poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) and polyethylene(PE).The thermal behavior,morphological structure,and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),Fourier transform infrared spectrum(FT-IR) imaging analysis and tensile measurement.When the 9% LCI is added,it is located at the interface and increases the adhesion of PBT and PP due to ion-dipole between LCI and PBT.The LCI brings about good adhesion at the interfacial,which reduces the disperse phase size and enables a finely PE phase at matrix.The tensile strength of the ternary blends is the maximum(24 MPa) when the 9%LCI is added.Excess amounts of LCI lead to flocculation or coagulation of the dispersed phase.As a result of poor dispersion,the mechanical properties decrease.
