Abstract:Up to now, it is still difficult for the niobium resource in the Bayan Obo complex polymetallic ore to be effectively utilized due to the existence of a great variety of phases of niobium minerals and quite different Nb properties. Aiming at such problem, a combined processing technique consisting of high-temperature reduction smelting of complex niobium ore and cooling crystallization of slag was proposed to transform various Nb-bearing minerals into a type of Nb-bearing phase, which is beneficial to Nb extraction. The effects of basicity (CaO/SiO2 ratio), the reduction degree of Fe and cooling rate on the grain size, compositions and micro-structure of Nb-bearing phase in the obtained slag were investigated in detail. It is found that the Nb in the slag exists mainly in the form of loparite; the basicity (CaO/SiO2 ratio) is the key factor affecting the composition of crystalline phase of mineral, but the reduction degree of Fe has no effect on the composition of crystalline phase of mineral; a lower cooling rate is beneficial for increasing the grain size of Nb-bearing phase.
