Abstract:Techniques for the preliminary design of a multistorey-multibay, moment-resisting reinforced concrete frames are investigated. Two-level optimization patterns are constructed in this paper. The objective function at the system level is to minimize the total volume of reinforcing steel. The relationship between the area of longitudinal reinforcement and the fully plastic moments of cross-sections will be approximated by a quadratic expression. Once the optimum plastic moments result at the system level, and the member sizes and reinforcement at critical sections within the span of each member will be selected at component level to complete the automatic resizing system. Two examples of reinforced concrete frames are presented to illustrate the features of the proposed method.
