Abstract:ABSTRACT

Identification of the weak areas in a transmission network that are most prone to voltage collapse is of great importance in voltage stability studies. Most analytical methods identify the weak areas by determining the critical busbars. A new method has recently been proposed by Jasmon et al by identifying the critical lines instead of critical busbars. This paper presents detailed results on the comparative study of the investigated stability methods i.e. Jasmon's method for identifying the critical lines, Kessel's, Lee's and Schlueter's methods for identifying the critical busbars. The objective of the study is to compare the performance and effectiveness of these methods based on Jasmon's stability factors, Kessel's stability indices, Lee's stability margins and Schlueter's stability indicators. From the comparison of results, it can be concluded that the method which identifies critical lines are in agreement with the methods that identify critical busbars. Test results also indicate that the method in identifying the critical lines offers several advantages over the method in identifying the critical busbars.
