Abstract: | The effect of the geometric shape of eroding particles on the threshold rate of failure has been assessed. It has been shown
that when the eroding particle size is changed, the failure mode may change from brittle to ductile and vice versa. The paper
presents the results of a comparative analysis of the erosion resistance of some metallic materials, using a structural-time
criterion of failure, for the impact of a single abrasive particle of cylindrical shape on the surface of an elastic half-space.
Hertz’s classical theory of impact is used.
