Abstract: | The rate of oxidation of Fe3O4 to α-Fe2O3 in 1 atm of oxygen has been measured at 592°, 629° and 667°C by Mössbauer transmission spectroscopy. Taken together with our earlier measurements, the data lead to an activation energy for α-Fe2O3 growth of 44 kcal mole−1 for the temperature interval 475–670°C. That the Mössbauer technique should prove useful in the study of reactions in oxide scales containing wüstite is also demonstrated. |
