| Abstract: | Silicon nitride-bonded silicon carbide ceramic tubes are used to provide indirect immersion heating in non-ferrous foundries. Samples of such tubes have been oxidized for varying lengths of time and then immersed in liquid aluminium. Long-term prior oxidation renders the ceramic susceptible to wetting by aluminium with subsequent degradation of mechanical properties. Samples not oxidized before immersion were stable in the liquid metal. |
