Establishment and variability of a method for determining the shrinkage rate of tobacco flakes

Abstract:  Objective  This study aims to accurately determine the post-drying shrinkage rate of tobacco flakes and to evaluate the shrinking characteristics of different tobacco raw materials.  Methods  A method was developed to determine the shrinkage rate of tobacco flakes based on the change rate of area before and after drying, and the measurement conditions such as flake size, shape and drying temperature were optimized by orthogonal tests.  Results  (1) Shrinking and bending may occur after drying, and the use of a mesh cover can effectively control the bending phenomenon and improve the accuracy and repeatability of the measurement of shrinkage rate. (2) The results of the orthogonal test showed that the size of the tobacco flakes and the drying temperature had a significant effect on the shrinkage rate, while the shape of the tobacco flakes did not have a significant effect; the largest shrinkage rate of the tobacco flakes was found using round flakes with a diameter of 30 mm under the drying temperature of 80℃. (3) There was significant difference in the shrinkage rate at different parts of the tobacco leaves, with the ranking of upper leaf> middle leaf > lower leaf.  Conclusion  Shrinkage is an inherent characteristic of tobacco leaves. The established method for determining the shrinkage rate is scientific and feasible, which can quantitatively evaluate the shrinking characteristics of tobacco leaves.
