World fiber use increased to 88 million tons in 2011

World fiber use in textile products increased 1% in 2011 to 88 million tons. Man-made fibers rose by 1% to 55 million tons, 62% of total fiber use. Man-made fibers increased in apparel and industrial uses. Cotton declined 2% to 27 million tons, 30% of fiber use. Cotton declined in apparel and grew in home textiles. Vegetable fibers other than cotton were about 5 million tons, 6% of fiber use ; industrial uses predominate ; flax is used in linen fabrics. Wool was about 1.2 million tons clean weight, 1% of fiber use.
