The Origins of Pecola's Loss of Self-identity

The Bluest Eye is the first novel of African American Toni Morrison. It tells a tragical story of a black girl Pecola who is longing for the blue eyes. In this novel many characters are questing for their self- identity in different ways. The protagonist Pecola is one of them. Because of the influence of racism, blacks' quest for identity is influenced by the universalized white norm. From the aspects of the white's look, isolation of the black community, and indifference and violence of the family members, this paper explores the origins of Pecola's loss of self-identity. .
