The 132 kV AC power cables and the optical fiber cable for thesubmarine intertie Italy-Elba Island

A 132 kV oil-filled submarine cable transmission system to supply power from mainland Italy (Piombino) to Elba island off its east coast and an associated fiber-optic submarine cable for telecommunication purposes are described. The power system comprises four single-core oil-filled cables and accessories, including an oil pumping plant with a cross-over system. Attention is focused on the system characteristics of the intertie, the environmental conditions and site survey, and the design, manufacture, installation and protection of the cable.
