Mechanical compatibilization of high density polyethylene–poly(ethylene terephthalate) blends
Authors:T. D. Traugott  J. W. Barlow  D. R. Paul
Abstract:Blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) exhibit extremely poor mechanical properties owing to the incompatibility of these two polymers. Such blends, however, would result from the reprocessing of certain carbonated beverage bottles. Addition of small amounts of a commercially available triblock copolymer greatly improved the ductility of these incompatible blends, whereas addition of an ethylene–propylene elastomer did not. The results are discussed in terms of phase morphology and interfacial adhesion among the various components.
