作为知识经济的重要载体,数字图书馆已成为国家信息基础设施重要组成部分,是评价一个国家信息基础水平的重要标志。我国数字图书馆起步较晚,目前正在建设中的中国数字图书馆工程是由国家图书馆承担的国家级数字资源系统工程,涉及信息资源生产、加工、存储、检索、传递等过程。建设数字图书馆需要大量的网上图书资源,可以说,文献数字化加工是数字图书馆的基础,否则数字图书馆就是空谈,而将现有纸介图书转化为数字化是一项复杂和庞大的工程。  相似文献

Digital Library support for textual and certain types of non-textual documents has significantly advanced over the last years. While Digital Library support implies many aspects along the whole library workflow model, interactive and visual retrieval allowing effective query formulation and result presentation are important functions. Recently, new kinds of non-textual documents which merit Digital Library support, but yet cannot be fully accommodated by existing Digital Library technology, have come into focus. Scientific data, as produced for example, by scientific experimentation, simulation or observation, is such a document type. In this article we report on a concept and first implementation of Digital Library functionality for supporting visual retrieval and exploration in a specific important class of scientific primary data, namely, time-oriented research data. The approach is developed in an interdisciplinary effort by experts from the library, natural sciences, and visual analytics communities. In addition to presenting the concept and to discussing relevant challenges, we present results from a first implementation of our approach as applied on a real-world scientific primary data set. We also report from initial user feedback obtained during discussions with domain experts from the earth observation sciences, indicating the usefulness of our approach.  相似文献

Reading books plays an important role in children's cognitive and social development. However, many children do not have access to diverse collections of books due to the limited resources of their community libraries. We have begun to address this issue by creating a large-scale digital archive of children's books, the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL). The use of computers for human-to-human communication among adults has been studied for many years, but using computer technology to enable children from all over the world to talk to each other has rarely been discussed by researchers. The goal of our research is to fill this gap and explore the design and evaluation of children’s cross-language online communities via a case study of the International Children’s Digital Library Communities (ICDLCommunities). This project supports the development of communities for children (ages 7–11) that form around the International Digital Children’s Library (ICDL) book collection. In this community the children can learn about each others’ cultures and make friends even if they do not speak the same language. They can also read and create stories and ask and answer questions about these. From this evaluation study we learned that: (i) children are very interested in their counterparts in other countries and a remarkable amount of communication takes place even when they do not share a common language; (ii) representing their identity online in many different forms is particularly important to children when communicating in an online community; (iii) children enjoy drawing but representing stories in a sequence of diagrams is challenging and needs support; and (iv) asking and answering questions without language is possible using graphical templates. In this paper we present our findings and make recommendations for designing children’s cross-cultural online communities.  相似文献

Federation of intelligent systems is important to practice in applications. More recently, Digital Library (DL) interoperability has played an important role towards providing more visibility and accessibility to the broad range of rich digital resources collected by digital libraries and web-based services worldwide. In this paper, we describe how DL interoperability can be applied to mediating federated intelligent systems. Exemplified by the Digital Library for Life Science Learners (DLLSL) federated search project and the Open Archives Initiatives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), we develop the design of an integrated DL system using harvesting methods towards DL interoperability, and the proposal of integrating federated search of non-OAI and harvesting of OAI repositories, which provides an even broader accessibility to intelligent systems with digital resources. This Meta-DL system helps researchers to locate, explore and use the resources in the expanding body of scholarly information by a simple middleware, such as Emerge (see “Section 2”).  相似文献

Our main library service, WebKat.hu, which is an online internet catalogue, has been provided since autumn 1999. The online service of the Digital Literary Academy started on the Internet in June 2000. As experimental digital library testbeds gain wider acceptance and develop significant user bases, it becomes important to investigate the ways in which users interact with the systems in practice. Transaction logs are one source of usage information, and the information on user behavior can be culled from them both automatically (through calculation of summary statistics) and manually (by examining query strings for semantic clues on search motivations and searching strategy). We have conducted a transaction log analysis on user activity in the Computer Science Technical Reports Collection of the New Zealand Digital Library, and report insights gained and identify resulting search interface design issues. Specifically, we present the user demographics available with our library, discuss the use of operators and search options in queries, and examine patterns in query construction and refinement. The Florida Digital Archive is a long-term digital preservation repository for the use of the libraries of the public universities of Florida. It is managed by the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA) and based on Dark Archive in the Sunshine State (DAITSS), repository software developed by FCLA with the aid of grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). DAITSS is designed to implement active preservation strategies based on format transformations including forward migration, normalization, and localization. As a case study, the Florida Digital Archive and DAITSS show that active preservation strategies can be incorporated into repository applications from the start, and that doing so affects all aspects of application design. The Florida Digital Archive has been in production since November 2005. The DAITSS application is nearing completion and will be released as open source software in 2006.  相似文献
