The tensile performance of adhesively bonded CFRP joints has been investigated experimentally. In this study, overlap length, adherend thickness, adherend width and scarf angle were chosen as design parameters. All load–displacement curves are linear, except that the thicker single-lap joints behave slightly nonlinearity due to the bending effect caused by eccentric loading. The lap shear strength is not directly proportional to overlap length, adherend thickness, adherend width and scarf angle for the brittle adhesive studied in the paper. The major failure mode includes adhesive shear failure and adherend delamination failure, sometimes accompanying with some fiber pull-out. Finally, the lap shear strength of three different lap types with similar bonding area (W=25 mm, L=10 mm, θ=5.71°) and adherend thickness (0.96 mm) was analyzed. It is found that the double-lap joint has the highest ultimate failure load. However, when considering the lap region weight, the scarf-lap joint is the most efficient.  相似文献

Experimental tests and finite element method (FEM) simulation were implemented to investigate T700/TDE86 composite laminate single-lap joints with different adhesive overlap areas and adherend laminate thickness. Three-dimensional finite element models of the joints having various overlap experimental parameters have been established. The damage initiation and progressive evolution of the laminates were predicted based on Hashin criterion and continuum damage mechanics. The delamination of the laminates and the failure of the adhesive were simulated by cohesive zone model. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results, proving the applicability of FEM. Damage contours and stress distribution analysis of the joints show that the failure modes of single-lap joints are related to various adhesive areas and adherend thickness. The minimum strength of the lap with defective adhesive layer was obtained, but the influence of the adhesive with defect zone on lap strength was not decisive. Moreover, the adhesive with spew-fillets can enhance the lap strength of joint. The shear and normal stress concentrations are severe at the ends of single-lap joints, and are the initiation of the failure. Analysis of the stress distribution of SL-2-0.2-P/D/S joints indicates that the maximum normal and shear stresses of the adhesive layer emerge on the overlap ends along the adhesive length. However, for the SL-2-0.2-D joint, the maximum normal stress emerges at the adjacent middle position of the defect zone along the adhesive width; for the SL-2-0.2-S joint, the maximum normal stress and shear stress emerge on both edges along the adhesive width.  相似文献

In this paper, an optimum design method for co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joints under axial load is proposed based on a failure model which incorporates the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the steel adherend and the failure mode of joints such as composite adherend failure and steel adherend failure. The design parameters considered were the test temperature, the stacking sequence of the composite adherends, the thickness ratio of the steel adherend to the composite adherend, and the existence of scarf in the steel adherend. Stress analysis of the cocured steel-composite tubular single lap joints was performed considering the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the steel adherend, and the fabrication residual thermal stress and thermal degradation of the composite adherend. The method developed may be employed in the joining of hybrid composite structures such as golf clubs and automotive composite propeller shafts in which a carbon/epoxy shaft has normally been bonded to a metal shaft with epoxy adhesives.  相似文献

This paper outlines an experimental study on the shear behaviour of structural silicone adhesively bonded steel-glass orthogonal lap joints. In the combination of steel plate and glass panel to form a hybrid structural glazing system, bonded joints with structural silicones can provide certain flexibility which relieves stress peaks at critical points of glass panel. The cohesive failure and its related fracture pattern of test joints with varied geometries of adhesives are examined experimentally. It is shown that the presence of two failure modes as discrete voids and macro cracks is closely related to the adhesive thickness. The effects of geometric parameters of adhesives on the joint shear strength are examined. It is demonstrated that the joint shear strengths are increased with increased individual overlap length, reduced adhesive thickness or increased adhesive width while the shear deformation corresponding to maximum shear force is mostly influenced by adhesive thickness. Mechanical contributions for those effects are analyzed accordingly. Finally, an analytical formula allowing for the equilibrium of strain and force on the adhesive and adherend is proposed for the analysis of shear strength. It is demonstrated that calculated normalized shear force ratios predicted by proposed formula agree well with those from experimental results.  相似文献

An experimental and numerical investigation into the shear strength behaviour of adhesive single lap joints (SLJs) was carried out in order to understand the effect of temperature on the joint strength. The adherend material used for the experimental tests was an aluminium alloy in the form of thin sheets, and the adhesive used was a high-strength high temperature epoxy. Tensile tests as a function of temperature were performed and numerical predictions based on the use of a bilinear cohesive damage model were obtained. It is shown that at temperatures below Tg, the lap shear strength of SLJs increased, while at temperatures above Tg, a drastic drop in the lap shear strength was observed. Comparison between the experimental and numerical maximum loads representing the strength of the joints shows a reasonably good agreement.  相似文献

The T-peel joint is commonly used in the automotive industry, especially in the panels of the load compartment in vans. In order to determine the effect of using a structural adhesive instead of spot-welding, a detailed series of tests and finite element analyses were conducted. The adhesive was a toughened epoxy and the adherend was mild steel used in the manufacture of the car bodyshell. Various parameters were investigated such as the bondline thickness and adherend radius. The spew fillet was maintained flush in all cases. Contrary to the case of lap joints, there are no stress concentrations around the fillet area and, therefore, it is possible to use the maximum uniaxial tensile stress as a failure criterion for these joints. The bending moment at failure was found to be constant across the different geometries modelled, and it was also similar to that found in lap shear joints in previous studies.  相似文献

Too often adhesive thickness, adherend thickness and other geometric factors are not explicitly considered in adhesive joint design. This study includes experimental and computational research exploring the means of enhancing the engineering design process for adhesive lap joints to include such effects. It clearly demon-strated that both the cleavage stresses and the shear stresses, near the bond termini, play important roles in lap 'shear' joint failure. Finite Element and Fracture Mechanics analyses were used to examine the energy release rate applied to growth of cracks in adhesive lap joints. Lap joints with similar geometries to those analyzed were designed, fabricated and tested. In a separate set of experiments the bond termini were constrained in the direction normal to the uniaxial loading. If the strength of lap shear joints is dominated by the adhesive shear strength, then constraining the lateral motion of the bond termini should have little or no effect on the overall shear strength of the adhesive joint. This work clearly demonstrates that this is not the case. If cleavage stresses are important in lap joints then constraining the bond termini, in a direction normal to the bond area, should have a commensurate effect on the overall strength of the lap joint. None of the ASTM standardized 'lap shear tests' provide any insight into this premise. This paper also presents analyses and experimental results for lap joints to which several methods of lateral constraint were applied near the bond termini. The analytical and numerical methods described and used for explaining and predicting such effects might be a useful adhesive joint design tool.  相似文献

In order to reduce the maximum peel and shear stress concentrations in the adhesive layer, a smart adhesively bonded scarf joint system was developed by surface bonding of piezoelectric patches onto a typical scarf joint. The forces and bending moments at the edges of the developed smart joint system can be adaptively controlled by adjusting the applied electric field on the piezoelectric patches, thus reducing the peel and shear stresses concentration in the adhesive layer. In order to verify the effect of surface bonding of piezoelectric patches in smart scarf adhesive joints, an analytical model was developed to evaluate the shear stress distribution and to predict the peel stress. It was established that the piezoelectric patched joint could reduce the stress concentrations at the scarf joint edges. The influence of the electric field and the effects of the scarf angle and the adherend Young's modulus on the peel and shear stresses were investigated. It was found that the effect of scarf angle is more significant at higher angles to raise the stresses. The effect of the electric field on the shear stress is more significant than on the peel stress.  相似文献

Four-point bend tests were performed on single lap joints with hard steel adherends and a structural epoxy adhesive. The effect of the overlap, the adherend thickness and the adhesive thickness was studied. It was found that the length of the overlap has no significant effect on the strength of the joints. This is because the load transfer is occurring in a very localised area around the edges of the overlap, being the failure governed by peel mechanisms. The thickness of the adherends strongly affects the strength of the joints. The thicker the adherend, the stronger is the joint. The experimental results are compared with a finite element model and reinforce the fact that the failure takes place due to local strains at the ends of the overlap in tension. An analytical model is also given to predict in a simple but effective way the joint strength and its dependence on the adherend thickness.  相似文献

The effect of adhesive thickness on tensile and shear strength of a polyimide adhesive has been investigated. Tensile and shear tests were carried out using butt and single lap joints. Commercially available polyimide (Skybond 703) was used as adhesive and aluminum alloy (5052-H34) was used as adherends. The tensile strength of the butt joints decreased with increasing adhesive thickness. In contrast, adhesive thickness did not seem to affect the shear strength of single lap joints. The fabricated joints using the polyimide adhesive failed in an interfacial manner regardless of adhesive thickness. The linear elastic stress analysis using a finite element method (FEM) indicates that the normal stress concentrated at the interface between the adherend and the adhesive. The FEM analysis considering the interfacial stress well explains the effect of adhesive thickness on the joint strength.  相似文献

This paper presents an approach to predicting the strength of joints bonded by structural adhesives using a finite element method. The material properties of a commercial structural adhesive and the strength of single-lap joints and scarf joints of aluminum bonded by this adhesive were experimentally measured to provide input for and comparison with the finite element model. Criteria based on maximum strain and stress were used to characterize the cohesive failure within the adhesive and adherend failure observed in this study. In addition to its simplicity, the approach described in this paper is capable of analyzing the entire deformation and failure process of adhesive joints in which different fracture modes may dominate and both adhesive and adherends may undergo inelastic deformation. It was shown that the finite element predictions of the joint strength generally agreed well with the experimental measurements.  相似文献

One major characteristic of bonded structures is the highly localised nature of deformation near sharp corners, ply-terminations, and ends of joints where load transfer occurs. This paper presents an investigation of the use of a cohesive zone model in predicting the strong effects of stress concentration due to varying adherend thickness on the pull-off strength measured by the Pneumatic Adhesion Tensile Testing Instrument. A comparison is made with the point-strain-at-a-distance criterion, where the plastic deformation of the adhesive is analysed using a modified Drücker–Prager/cap plasticity material model. The fracture properties of the cohesive zone model were determined using double-cantilever and end-notch flexural specimens, and the cohesive strengths were measured using tensile and lap shear tests. Comparisons with experimental results reveal that the cohesive zone model with perfectly plastic (or non-strain-softening) cohesive law provides accurate predictions of joint strengths.  相似文献

The design of adhesively bonded joints is a quite difficult task, due to the stress singularity that arises at the edges of the adhesive adjacent to the loaded substrate. This stress singularity makes any design approach based on elastic stress analysis inconvenient. A more convenient design tool for an adhesive joint should be based on its mode of failure. Most of the adhesive joints fail at the adhesive/adherend interface or very close to it in the adhesive layer. Therefore, a fracture theory such as linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) can be used to analyse the failure of an adhesive joint. In this paper, the design of a single lap joint using a fracture mechanics parameter, i.e. the strain energy release rate (SERR), is discussed. The SERR is extracted from a finite element model using Irwin's virtual crack closure integral. A design equation relating the lap length to the adherend thickness through some design parameters is derived.  相似文献

Hybrid-adhesive joints are an alternative stress reduction technique for adhesively bonded joints. The joints have two types of adhesives in the overlap region. The stiff adhesive should be located in the middle and flexible adhesive at the ends. In this study, the effect of the hybrid-adhesive bondline on the shear and peeling stresses of a double lap joint were investigated using a three-dimensional finite element model. We developed a three dimensional model of the double lap joint based on solid and contact elements. Contact problem is considered to model the interface as two surfaces belonging to adherend and adhesive. Finite element analyses were performed for four different bond-length ratios (0.2,0.4,0.7 and 1.3). The results show that the stress components can be optimized using appropriate bond-length ratios. To validate the finite element analysis results, comparisons were made with available closed-form solutions. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the analytical solutions.  相似文献

The study presented in this paper was carried out to investigate further the effects of strain rate on the strength of adhesively bonded single lap shear joints. Tests were carried out on two different configurations of adhesively bonded joints that were designed to exhibit different behaviours. In one configuration both adherends were made from a relatively low strength grade of aluminium such that both would exhibit significant plastic deformation prior to adhesive failure. The other configuration used one adherend that was significantly stronger such that only elastic deformation was exhibited prior to failure of the adhesive. The joint specimens were tested at several different strain rates using a servo-hydraulic test machine and the results analysed using statistical methods. To further understand the results Finite Element models of the joints were created using a Cohesive Zone Model to predict damage development and failure in the adhesive. The Design of Experiments procedure was used to study the effects of material parameters relating to both the adherends and the adhesive in the Finite Element models. The results of the testing suggested that the strength of joints formed from two adherends that exhibited plastic deformation prior to failure did not show statistically significant sensitivity to strain rate. Interpretation of the results of the Finite Element analyses suggested that the adherend yield was the main factor influencing failure load in the adhesive for joints of this type.  相似文献

The goal of this research was to experimentally demonstrate the correlations between processing variables (adhesive type, bondline thickness, adherend thickness, surface pretreatment, overflow fillet) and effective strength in adhesively bonded single lap joints. While generalizations between effective strength and individual joint design parameters have been assumed for decades, the multifaceted interplay between parameters is complex and remains difficult to understand. Traditionally reported studies of the adhesive bond strength of single lap joints are often limited in the sample size populations needed to statistically probe concurrent design variables. To overcome sample size limitations a test matrix of 1200 single lap joints, partitioned by 96 unique fabrication conditions, was processed and tested using a workflow protocol orchestrated through a relational database. The enhanced pedigree and integrity enabled by using a relational database centered workflow allowed for multivariate principal component analysis of the joint design parameters, with all experimental data input available for peer audit. The results of this study revealed that the adhesive type biases the remaining joint configuration variables towards more influence with respect to either mechanical load or displacement to failure.  相似文献

Single lap joints in many different geometric and material configurations were analysed using finite element analysis and tested in tension. Geometric parameters, such as the overlap length and adherend thickness, together with material parameters such as the adherend and adhesive stress–strain behaviour, were all tested. The mechanisms and modes of failure were observed for different cases, and positions of damage initiation were identified. Failure patterns were related to failure mechanisms. A failure prediction methodology has been proposed and a good correlation was obtained between the experimental and finite element predictions of strength for a variety of joint configurations. The study is presented in two parts. In the first (present paper), high strength steel adherends are considered and in the second paper ductile steel adherends are studied. For high strength steel adherends and a relatively short overlap, failure is dominated by adhesive global yielding. As the overlap gets longer, however, failure is no longer due to global yielding, but due to high local shear strains.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted on the strength of adhesively bonded steel joints, prepared epoxy and acrylic adhesives. At first, to obtain strength characteristics of these adhesives under uniform stress distributions in the adhesive layer, tensile tests for butt, scarf and torsional test for butt joints with thin-wall tube were conducted. Based on the above strength data, the fracture envelope in the normal stress-shear stress plane for the acrylic adhesive was compared with that for the epoxy adhesive. Furthermore, for the epoxy and acrylic adhesives, the effect of stress triaxiality parameter on the failure stress was also investigated. From those comparison, it was found that the effect of stress tri-axiality in the adhesive layer on the joint strength with the epoxy adhesive differed from that with the acrylic adhesive. Fracture toughness tests were then conducted under mode l loading using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with the epoxy and acrylic adhesives. The results of the fracture toughness tests revealed continuous crack propagation for the acrylic adhesive, whereas stick-slip type propagation for the epoxy one. Finally, lap shear tests were conducted using lap joints bonded by the epoxy and acrylic adhesives with several lap lengths. The results of the lap shear tests indicated that the shear strength with the epoxy adhesive rapidly decreases with increasing lap length, whereas the shear strength with the acrylic adhesive decreases gently with increasing the lap length.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine how the fracture of adhesive joints depends on elastic beam parameters describing the adherends and the applied loads. The basic specimen geometry was the cracked lap shear joint constructed of aluminium alloy with various adherend and bondline thicknesses. Loads were applied in different combinations of bending, tension and shear to generate a failure envelope for each adhesive and specimen geometry. It was found that crack propagation for precracked specimens occured at a critical strain energy release rate but was also a function of the GI/GII ratio and the bondline thickness. The experiments also showed that the loads required to propagate a crack in a precracked specimen were always lower than the loads required to break the fillet. Hence, by treating uncracked joints as being cracked, where the fictitious crack tip is assumed to coincide with the location of the fillet, a conservative estimate of the failure load is obtained.  相似文献

Frequently it is not easy using visual or even microscopic examination of an adhesive joint to determine after physical testing whether an apparent adhesive failure occurred at the original interface due to improper wetting or at some new interface leaving behind a thin layer of adhesive. Elemental analysis techniques such as ion scattering spectrometry (ISS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) are easily capable of determining the locus of failure in an adhesive joint. The use of these two techniques in combination is shown for investigating adhesive bonding phenomena. The operating parameters as well as advantages and disadvantages of each are summarized. ISS-SIMS data are shown for two adherend surfaces which broke in a lap shear test by apparent cohesive failure in both the adhesive and adherend.  相似文献
