We present a novel design for a Sagnac loop filter (SLF) whose periodic output spectrum can be fully controlled by cascading a small-birefringence loop (SBL) with a high-birefringence loop (HBL). We develop a detailed theoretical analysis, using the Jones vector method, to calculate the transfer function of the tunable SLF. It has been quantitatively shown that both the transmission coefficient and the phase of the SLF can be controlled by adjusting the orientation angle of the birefringent axes of the SBL in the plane of polarization. The theory has been confirmed by experimental results where a stress-induced SBL was mechanically rotated to tune both the wavelength and the power of a periodic output spectrum. Such a tunable SLF is used in the design of a multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser in the C band.  相似文献

A tunable multiwavelength fiber laser based on double Sagnac loops is proposed and demonstrated. Comb filter characteristics of single and double Sagnac loops are analyzed by Jones matrix. Simulated results show that there are better tunability and controllability with double loops than with a single loop, and this also has been confirmed by experimental results. By adjusting the polarization controller and the length of the polarization maintaining fiber the wavelength range, wavelength spacing, and laser linewidth can be tuned. Experimental results indicate that the linewidth of the multiwavelength fiber laser was 0.0187 nm and the optical sidemode suppression ratio was 50 dB.  相似文献

We present a stable and switchable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser. In the ring cavity, an inverse-Gaussian apodized fiber Bragg grating serves as an ultranarrow dual-wavelength passband filter, a semiconductor optical amplifier biased in the low-gain regime reduces the gain competition of the two wavelengths, and a feedback fiber loop acts as a mode filter to guarantee a stable single-longitudinal-mode operation. Two lasing lines with a wavelength separation of approximately 0.1 nm are obtained experimentally. A microwave signal at 12.51 GHz is demonstrated by beating the dual wavelengths at a photodetector.  相似文献

An all-optical analog-to-digital conversion scheme based on a Sagnac loop and balanced receivers is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Adjustable phase shift about the transfer function of the Sagnac loop is obtained by using the multiwavelength optical pulses to realize the phase-shift optical quantization. Benefit from the complementary outputs at the transmitted and reflected ports of the Sagnac loop and balanced receiver can be used to obtain the quantized output binary signal for the encoding operation. A proof-of-concept experiment is implemented using a wavelength tunable continuous-wave laser diode. Using 16 different wavelengths, the 16 quantization levels are demonstrated and an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 4?bits is obtained.  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate a highly flexible fiber laser capable of generating stable multiwavelength picosecond and single wavelength femtosecond pulses by using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror and a contrast ratio tunable comb filter. In the multiwavelength lasing regime, up to 11-wavelength stable mode-locked pulses in 3 dB bandwidth with a channel spacing of 0.8 nm were obtained. While in the single wavelength with broadband spectrum lasing regime, the fiber laser emitted 576 fs soliton pulse. Through changing the contrast ratio of the comb filter, the conversion between the multiwavelength picosecond and single wavelength femtosecond pulsed operations could be efficiently achieved.  相似文献

We propose and experimentally demonstrate switchable and tunable transmission characteristics of a single-core comb filter based on thermal operation. Its temperature characteristics are investigated to reveal a shift in the peak wavelength position from 0.15 to 0.41 nm/°C and a tunable range of wavelength spacing of 1.18–1.38 nm for maximum and minimum effective lengths, respectively. This configuration provides the unique advantages of an all-fiber structure, tunable wavelength spacing, switchable spectral peaks, independent tuning of the center wavelength and wavelength spacing of the spectral peaks, and low polarization sensitivity. It is relatively simple to fabricate and is expected to have applications in temperature fiber optic sensors and multiwavelength fiber laser sources.  相似文献

A method to realize room-temperature operation of a multifrequency Er-doped fiber laser with low-frequency shift feedback placed within a linear laser cavity is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simultaneous multiwavelength lasing with 0.5 nm wavelength spacing is experimentally demonstrated by applying a sinusoidal signal of 10 kHz to a fiber phase modulator inserted within the linear cavity to prevent single wavelength steady-state oscillation. In the linear cavity, an all-polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop is used as a periodic filter, and a single-mode fiber loop with a polarization controller is used as a partial reflector and also as an output port.  相似文献

A wavelength-spacing switchable multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber lasers incorporating a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) has been demonstrated. The intensity-dependent transmission effect originating from NPR ensures room-temperature multi-wavelength lasing, which is further self-stabilized by the four-wave mixing in the HNF. Moreover, the equivalent Lyot birefringence fiber filter with two cascaded birefringence fibers makes the wavelength spacing switchable depending on the effective length of the birefringence fiber. The experimentally obtained multiwavelength outputs agree well with the simulation filter transmission spectra.  相似文献

A new structure for the L-band multiwavelength switchable erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed. Overlapping laser cavities are formed by cascading fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors in a ring structure with a C-band EDFA as a common gain medium. The proposed laser is made to be wavelength-switchable by individually adjusting the loss of each overlapping cavity. Instead of using an L-band EDFA as the gain medium in the L-band fiber laser, we have experimentally demonstrated that by tailoring the gain of the C-band EDFA to have a significant gain tilt in the L-band, a lasing power efficiency of 26% can be achieved over a wide range of switchable lasing wavelengths. Following this optimal design, the side-mode suppression ratio and the minimal separation between two switchable lasing wavelengths were found to be over 42 dB and 0.33 nm, respectively.  相似文献

A simple fiber laser configuration based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed for obtaining multi-wavelength oscillation at room temperature, in which a Sagnac loop mirror is used as the wavelength selective component. The SOA has a flat gain of approximately 23dB within a bandwidth of 12 nm at a small input signal power. The loop mirror was constructed using a 3dB coupler and polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). The output spectrum of the proposed laser can be adjusted by controlling the bias current of the SOA and is quite stable at room temperature. At a bias current of 150 mA, six lines are obtained with at least ?40 dBm output power and 25dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The channel spacing and number of lines is determined by the length of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) used in the loop mirror. The channel spacing of the proposed laser is 1.49 nm with a PMF 3 m. The multi-wavelength comb output can also be tuned by adjusting the operating temperature of the SOA. The multi-wavelength laser has the advantage of a simple configuration, stability at room temperature, a broad wavelength band, and no need for optical pump lasers.  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate a tunable S-band multiwavelength Brillouin/Raman fiber laser (MBRFL) with a tuning range of between 1490 to 1530 nm. The proposed MBRFL is designed around a 7.7 km long dispersion compensating fiber in a simple ring configuration, acting as a nonlinear medium for the generation of multiple wavelengths from stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and also as a nonlinear gain medium for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) amplification. A laser source with a maximum power of 12 dBm acts as the Brillouin pump (BP), while two 1420 nm laser diodes with a total power of 26 dBm act as the Raman pumps (RPs). The MBRFL can generate a multiwavelength comb consisting of even and odd Stokes at an average power of -12 dBm and -14 dBm respectively, and by separating the even and odd Stokes outputs, a 20 GHz channel spacing is obtained between two consecutive wavelengths. Due to the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect, anti-Stokes lines are also observed. The multiwavelength comb generated is not dependent on the BP, thus providing high stability and repeatability and making it a highly potential source for many real-world applications. This is the first time, to the knowledge of the authors, that a tunable MBRFL has been developed using SRS to obtain gain in the S-band region.  相似文献

A tapered fiber is fabricated by heating and stretching a piece of optical fiber after the polymer protective cladding has been removed. An equidistant comb-like transmission spectrum, with a spacing of 1.6?nm and an extinction ratio of more than 5?dB, was obtained by the tapered fiber due to the multibeam interferences of the cladding modes. The tapered fiber was applied in a ring erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) to generate dual-wavelength lasing oscillations. The EDFL operates at wavelengths of 1557.0?nm and 1558.6?nm with a stable peak power and a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 40?dB.  相似文献

A technique that allows a fiber optic Sagnac interferometer based microwave photonic device to be implemented using non-polarization maintaining components inside the Sagnac loop while still obtaining an output that is insensitive to changes in environmental conditions is presented. It is based on inserting the non-polarization maintaining components in between a polarization beam combiner and a Faraday rotator mirror inside the loop. The technique also introduces a phase bias to the light propagating inside the loop. Experimental results demonstrate that the discretely and continuously tunable Sagnac loop based signal processors implemented using non-polarization maintaining components have an environmentally insensitive frequency response.  相似文献

A graphene-based Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with a tunable fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) acting as a wavelength tuning mechanism is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed setup utilizes a newly-developed ‘ferrule-to-ferrule transfer’ technique to obtain a single graphene layer that allows for Q-switch operation in the EDFL using a highly doped-gain medium. A TFBG is used as a wavelength tuning mechanism with a tuning range of 10 nm, covering the wavelength range from 1547.66 nm to 1557.66 nm. The system has a wide repetition rate range of over 206.613 kHz from 1.387 kHz to 208.000 kHz with pulse durations of between 94.80 μs to 0.412 μs. The laser output is dependent on the pump power, with energy per pulse of 4.56 nJ to 16.26 nJ. The system is stable, with power and wavelength variations of less than 0.47 dBm and 0.067 nm. The output pulse train is free from self-mode locking and pulse jitters.  相似文献

We propose a continuously tunable, dual free spectral range (FSR) photonic microwave notch filter configuration using a high-birefringence linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (Hi-Bi LCFBG) that is connected in a Sagnac loop using a Hi-Bi coupler. The configuration employs double sideband modulation and can generate two FSRs simultaneously. The larger FSR corresponds to the differential time delay of the Hi-Bi LCFBG and the Hi-Bi pigtails of the coupler; the smaller FSR corresponds to the time delay between the arms of the Sagnac loop. Measured results demonstrate dual FSR, a large notch rejection, and that the FSR is easily tunable by tuning the LCFBG. We also present the filter transfer function for the design. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

A simple switchable multiwavelength double-clad fiber laser using a multimode fiber Bragg grating (MMFG) as a wavelength selective component is demonstrated. The MMFG is fabricated directly in the active double-clad fiber, resulting in low splicing loss and compact configuration. By properly adjusting the polarization controller in the cavity, the double-clad fiber laser can stably operate at different multiwavelength states at room temperature. At lower pump levels, the laser can be switched between single- and dual-wavelength operations, while at higher pump levels the laser can switch between dual- and triple-wavelength operations. The slope efficiency of the system is 41% with the maximum output power of 6.2 W.  相似文献

For the first time, a tunable wavelength range of 2.1 nm has been achieved with a temperature variation of 62°C and a regression coefficient of 0.997. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory.  相似文献

This paper describes a fiber optic sensor suitable for noncontact detection of ultrasonic waves. This sensor is based on the fiber optic Sagnac interferometer, which has a path-matched configuration and does not require active stabilization. Quadrature phase bias between two interfering laser beams in the Sagnac loop is applied by controlling the birefringence using a fiber polarization controller. A stable quadrature phase bias can be confirmed by observing the interferometer output according to the change of phase bias. Additional signal processing is not needed for the detection of ultrasonic waves using the Sagnac interferometer. Ultrasonic oscillations produced by conventional ultrasonic piezoelectric transducers were successfully detected, and the performance of this interferometer was investigated by a power spectrum analysis of the output signal. Based on the validation of the fiber optic Sagnac interferometer, noncontact detection of laser-generated surface waves was performed. The configured Sagnac interferometer is very effective for the detection of small displacement with high frequency, such as ultrasonic waves used in conventional nondestructive testing (NDT)  相似文献

We have proposed a switchable mode-locked fiber laser by means of carbon nanotube saturable absorber and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The single-wavelength mode-locking operation can be switched between 1549.5 and 1559.5 nm, respectively, which correspond to the central wavelengths of two FBGs. With the appropriate setting of polarization controller, the stable dual-wavelength operation can be achieved due to the high stability of saturable absorber based on carbon nanotubes. Our method provides a simple, stable, low-cost, dual-wavelength ultrafast-pulsed source.  相似文献
