This article presents an experimental and numerical analysis of cooling buildings using night‐time cold accumulation in phase change material (PCM), otherwise known as the ‘free‐cooling principle’. Experimental and numerical studies of the ceiling and floor free‐cooling principle, as well as passive cooling, are presented. The free‐cooling principle is explained and some of the types of PCMs suitable for summer cooling are listed. An experiment was conducted using paraffin with a melting point of 22°C as the PCM to store cold during the night‐time and to cool hot air during the daytime in summer. Air temperatures and heat fluxes as a function of time and dimensionless cold discharging values are presented for different air velocities. Experimental analysis of one week of measuring under real conditions is presented in order to show how cold storage functions. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper aims to explore an efficient, cost-effective, and water-saving seasonal cold energy storage technique based on borehole heat exchangers to cool the condenser water in a 10 MW solar thermal power plant. The proposed seasonal cooling mechanism is designed for the areas under typical weather conditions to utilize the low ambient temperature during the winter season and to store cold energy. The main objective of this paper is to utilize the storage unit in the peak summer months to cool the condenser water and to replace the dry cooling system. Using the simulation platform transient system simulation program (TRNSYS), the borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) system model has been developed and the dynamic capacity of the system in the charging and discharging mode of cold energy for one-year operation is studied. The typical meteorological year (TMY) data of Dunhuang, Gansu province, in north-western China, is utilized to determine the lowest ambient temperature and operation time of the system to store cold energy. The proposed seasonal cooling system is capable of enhancing the efficiency of a solar thermal power plant up to 1.54% and 2.74% in comparison with the water-cooled condenser system and air-cooled condenser system respectively. The techno-economic assessment of the proposed technique also supports its integration with the condenser unit in the solar thermal power plant. This technique has also a great potential to save the water in desert areas.  相似文献

Both cool roof and phase change thermal storage are promising technologies in decreasing building energy consumption. Combining these two technologies is likely to further enhance the thermal comfort of the building as well as reduce air condition loads. In this paper, the cooling performance and energy-saving effects of four types of roof (normal roof, phase change material [PCM] roof, cool roof, and cool PCM roof [cool roof coupled with PCM]) were investigated under a simulated sunlight. Experimental results indicate that compared with normal roof, the other three roofs are able to narrow the indoor temperature fluctuation and decrease the heat flow entering into the room. Among them, cool PCM roof gave the best energy-saving effect that can lower the indoor temperature and heat entering into rooms by 6.6°C and 52.9%, respectively. Besides, the PCM location, PCM thickness, and insulation thickness exerted great impacts on the cooling performance of the roof. Placing the PCM on the internal layer beneath the extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation board can make the indoor temperature 1.2°C lower than that on the middle layer. Although thicker PCM panels or insulation boards can provide a better thermal insulation, 5 mm in PCM thickness and 20 mm in insulation thickness are enough to guarantee the indoor temperature of cool PCM roof system at a comfortable range (22°C-28°C) for a whole day. These findings will give guidance in designing buildings with a light and compact roof structure to decrease energy consumption and improve comfort level.  相似文献

The continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions and the rise in fuel prices are the main driving forces behind the efforts for more effectively utilize various sources of renewable energy. In many parts of the world, direct solar radiation is considered to be one of the most prospective sources of energy. In this study, the thermal performance of a phase change thermal storage unit is analyzed and discussed. The storage unit is a component of ten pieced solar air collectors heating system being developed for space heating of a greenhouse and charging of PCM. CaCl26H2O was used as PCM in thermal energy storage with a melting temperature of 29 °C. Hot air delivered by ten pieced solar air collector is passed through the PCM to charge the storage unit. The stored heat is utilized to heat ambient air before being admitted to a greenhouse. This study is based on experimental results of the PCM employed to analyze the transient thermal behavior of the storage unit during the charge and discharge periods. The proposed size of collectors integrated PCM provided about 18–23% of total daily thermal energy requirements of the greenhouse for 3–4 h, in comparison with the conventional heating device.  相似文献

The thermal performance of a phase change thermal storage unit is analysed and discussed. The storage unit is a component of a roof integrated solar heating system being developed for space heating of a home. The unit consists of several layers of phase change material (PCM) slabs with a melting temperature of 29 °C. Warm air delivered by a roof integrated collector is passed through the spaces between the PCM layers to charge the storage unit. The stored heat is utilised to heat ambient air before being admitted to a living space. The study is based on both experimental results and a theoretical two dimensional mathematical model of the PCM employed to analyse the transient thermal behaviour of the storage unit during the charge and discharge periods. The analysis takes into account the effects of sensible heat which exists when the initial temperature of the PCM is well below or above the melting point during melting or freezing. The significance of natural convection occurring inside the PCM on the heat transfer rate during melting which was previously suspected as the cause of faster melting process in one of the experiments is discussed. The results are compared with a previous analysis based on a one dimensional model which neglected the effect of sensible heat. A comparison with experimental results for a specific geometry is also made.  相似文献

The imbalance of electrical demand in summer due to cooling system demand is a big problem in many countries. One promising solution is shifting peak demand from early afternoon to night by utilizing natural cold energy resources such as cool outside air during night or running a refrigerator driven by midnight power. In these cases, using the thermal energy storage (TES) of phase change material (PCM) which has a melting point from 15 to 25 °C is one of the most effective ideas. However, few suitable PCMs for this temperature range are at present commercially available. This study aims to evaluate the potential of Mn(NO3)2 · 6H2O (manganese (II) nitrate hexahydrate) as a new PCM for the TES of cooling systems. First, experiments on the modulation of the melting point of Mn(NO3)2 · 6H2O and reduction of supercooling were made by dissolving small amounts of salts in the material. Consequently, MnCl2 · 4H2O was found to have good performance with regard to both modulation of the melting temperature and the heat of fusion. Next, a thermal response test was carried out by using a small cylindrical vessel. Results showed that the required temperature levels for charging and discharging the heat of this mixture were clarified. In addition, the price and safety of this material as a PCM are discussed.  相似文献

The long-term system simulation and economic analysis of solar-assisted cooling/heating system (SACH-2) was carried out in order to find an economical design. The solar heat driven ejector cooling system (ECS) is used to provide part of the cooling load to reduce the energy consumption of the air conditioner installed as the base-load cooler. A standard SACH-2 system for cooling load 3.5 kW (1 RT) and daily cooling time 10 h is used for case study. The cooling performance is assumed only in summer seasons from May to October. In winter season from November to April, only heat is supplied. Two installation locations (Taipei and Tainan) were examined. It was found from the cooling performance simulation that in order to save 50% energy of the air conditioner, the required solar collector area is 40 m2 in Taipei and 31 m2 in Tainan, for COPj = 0.2. If the solar collector area is designed as 20 m2, the solar ejector cooling system will supply about 17–26% cooling load in Taipei in summer season and about 21–27% cooling load in Tainan. Simulation for long-term performance including cooling in summer (May–October) and hot water supply in winter (November–April) was carried out to determine the monthly-average energy savings. The corresponding daily hot water supply (with 40 °C temperature rise of water) for 20 m2 solar collector area is 616–858 L/day in Tainan and 304–533 L/day in Taipei. The economic analysis shows that the payback time of SACH-2 decreases with increasing cooling capacity. The payback time is 4.8 years in Tainan and 6.2 years in Taipei when the cooling capacity >10 RT. If the ECS is treated as an additional device used as a protective equipment to avoid overheating of solar collectors and to convert the excess solar heat in summer into cooling to reduce the energy consumption of air conditioner, the payback time is less than 3 years for cooling capacity larger than 3 RT.  相似文献

This paper reports the development and construction of the novel solar cooling and heating system. The system consists of the thermal energy subsystem and the desiccant cooling subsystem. The system utilizes both the cheaper nighttime electric energy and the free daytime solar energy. The system is conceptualized to produce both cooling during summer daytime and hot water production during winter. Testing and evaluation of the system had been done to determine its operational procedure and performance. Based on the results, the thermal energy subsystem functioned to its expected performance in solar energy collection and thermal storage. The desiccant cooling subsystem reduced both the temperature and the humidity content of the air using solar energy with a minimal amount of back-up electric energy. The system however, needs further investigation under real conditions.  相似文献

Lauric acid (m.p.: 42.6°C) and myristic acid (m.p.: 52.2°C) are phase change materials (PCM) having quite high melting points which can limit their use in low‐temperature solar applications such as solar space heating and greenhouse heating. However, their melting temperatures can be tailored to appropriate value by preparing a eutectic mixture of lauric acid (LA) and myristic acid (MA). In the present study, the thermal analysis based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique shows that the mixture of 66.0 wt% LA forms a eutectic mixture having melting temperature of 34.2°C and the latent heat of fusion of 166.8 J g?1. This study also considers the experimental establishment of thermal characteristics of the eutectic PCM in a vertical concentric pipe‐in‐pipe heat storage system. Thermal performance of the PCM was evaluated with respect to the effect of inlet temperature and mass flow rate of the heat transfer fluid on those characteristics during the heat charging and discharging processes. The DSC thermal analysis and the experimental results indicate that the LA–MA eutectic PCM can be potential material for low‐temperature solar energy storage applications in terms of its thermo‐physical and thermal characteristics. This paper describes the design of a solar air heating and night/day exchange cooling system with emphasis on the operational modes. In this type of system the collector absorbs solar energy and converts it to heat for space heating and domestic water heating. Cooling is accomplished by using the cool night air available in dry climates) to cool a pebble-bed storage unit and subsequently using the cool pebbles to lower the air temperature in the building during the day. Circulation is from the solar system to the building in the same manner as most modern heating and air conditioning units but uses air as the medium for heat transfer. The air system is particularly suited for climatic regions where heating loads are high and cooling requirements are moderate. The system utilized in Solar House II operates in either the heating or cooling mode as selected through a seasonable change-over switch. Solar preheated hot water is furnished for domestic use in either mode.  相似文献

In Saudi Arabia, the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system typically accounts for 65% of the total electrical energy consumption in buildings. This is due to a very high ambient temperature which persists for a long period of time in a summer season. Moreover, gas turbines efficiency decrease also with the high ambient temperatures. In the HVAC industry cool storage, or commonly known as Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is the most preferred demand side management (DSM) technology for shifting cooling electrical demand from peak daytime periods to off‐peak night‐time. The most popular and well‐suited TES concept for Saudi Arabia is either chilled water or ice storage system, depending upon the applications and the required storage capacity. This paper shows how TES offers a means of reducing the electrical demand in large commercial buildings. Additionally, it is seen that efficiencies of the air cooled chillers are increased if they run overnight. Similarly efficiencies of gas turbine is also increased when a TES based pre‐cooled air is used as an inlet to the turbine. This paper also discusses favouring conditions and other aspects of cool storage applications in Saudi Arabia. TES economics are considered and a cost analysis is presented to illustrate the potential savings that can be achieved by the use of TES in Saudi Arabia. An experimental solar energy facility was designed to meet as much of the heating demand in a typical Spanish dwelling as possible. With a view to using the facility during the summer and preventing overheating-induced deterioration of the solar collectors in that season of the year, an absorption chiller was fitted to the system to produce solar-powered air conditioning. The facility operated in solar space heating mode in the winter of 2008–2009 and in cooling mode during the summer of 2008. The design was based on a new type of flat plate vacuum solar collectors that delivered higher efficiency than conventional panels. This type of collectors can reach temperatures of up to 110 °C in the summer and up to 70 °C on the coldest winter days. The solar facility comprised a 48-m2 (with a net area of 42 m2) solar collector field, a 25-kW plate heat exchanger, a 1500-l storage tank, a 4.5-kW (Rotartica) air-cooled absorption chiller and several fan coils. The facility was tested by using it to heat and cool an 80-m2 laboratory located in Madrid. As the average area of Spanish homes is 80 m2, the findings were generally applicable to national housing. The solar facility was observed to be able to meet 65.3% of the space heating demand. For air conditioning, the system covered 46% of the demand, but with high indoor temperatures. In other words, the collector field was found to be able to air condition only half of the home (40 m2). Lastly, the savings in CO2 emissions afforded by the use of this facility compared to conventional air conditioning were calculated, along with its amortisation period. These results have been extrapolated calculating the potential energy savings and emissions reduction for all the Spanish households.  相似文献

A parametric analysis is conducted for space cooling systems based on cold water flowing, during the night, within regularly arranged pipes embedded in a layer of phase change material (PCM), located among the structural layers of the ceiling. The introduced PCM layer in conjunction with night cooling add to the usual ceiling cooling systems offers the advantages of low energy consumption, high cool storage capacity, operation under reduced night electricity price, smoothing of electricity consumption by eliminating daily peak loads, improved thermal comfort and elimination of ceiling dripping. Our parametric analysis is based on a transient three‐dimensional finite‐difference solution of the related heat‐transfer problem for various values of all the main system parameters. PCM phase change process is simulated by using the effective thermal capacity function, which is determined experimentally for PCM suitable for air‐conditioning applications. Our tests showed that the main parameters of the system are pipe spacing, PCM layer thickness, pipe depth within the ceiling, cooling water inlet temperature, night cooling duration and PCM properties (thermal conductivity, phase change heat and ends of phase change temperature range). The effect of all the above parameters is analysed and suggestions are made for selecting the proper combinations of their values in order to obtain the lowest energy consumption in conjunction with the highest level of thermal comfort. A new zero energy cool chamber (ZECC) consisting of two cooling systems, a solar-driven adsorption refrigerator and an evaporative cooling system, was developed and then evaluated as low-cost and eco-friendly cooling storage for storing fruit with moderate respiration rates. The solar-driven adsorption refrigerator, consisting of a solar collector containing activated carbon as an adsorbent, a condenser and an evaporator, cools water based by evaporating methanol and adsorbing it on activated carbon, and then makes ice. The methanol adsorbed on the activated carbon is desorbed by applying solar heat. The ice is then used to cool the storage space, which can be done for a long time without the need for electricity. The evaporative cooling system also cools the storage space by evaporating water from the wet walls containing wet filler. The combined use of two cooling systems reduced the average inside temperature of the new ZECC to 12.07 °C compared with an average outside temperature of 31.5 °C and extended the shelf life of tomatoes from 7 to 23 days. These results suggest that the new ZECC proposed here is low-cost and energy-saving and is useful for storing fruit and vegetables in areas where electricity is unavailable.  相似文献

This work aims to evaluate the energy and the exergy performance of an integrated phase change material (PCM) solar collector with latent heat storage in transient conditions. A theoretical model based on the first and the second laws of thermodynamics is developed to predict the thermal behaviour of the system. The effect of natural convection on heat during the melting process is taken into account using an effective thermal conductivity. Influence of PCM thicknesses on the melt fraction, on the energy stored and on the exergy destroyed are studied during charging and discharging processes. Results indicate that the complete melting time is shorter than the solidification time. The latent heat storage system increases the heating requirements at night and reduces the exergy efficiency.  相似文献

In this study, a numerical analysis is performed to investigate the freezing process of phase change materials (PCM) in a predesigned thermal energy storage (TES) device. This TES device is integrated with a milk storage cooling cycle operating under predefined practical conditions. Using this cooling unit, 100 litres of milk is kept cool at 4°C for 48 hours before it is collected. A 2-D model of the TES device is developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to analyze the phase change performance of water-based PCMs. The variations of thermal properties with temperature during the phase change are considered in the analysis. The model is used for exploring the solidification process of PCMs inside the TES device. Temperature variations with time, ice formation, and the impacts of boundary conditions are investigated in detail. Water PCM shows better characteristics in the solidification process in comparison to eutectic PCMs, which is mainly due to the differences between phase change temperatures of the PCMs.  相似文献

Free cooling night ventilation is the process of storing the coolness in the night time and releasing this coolness in hot day time. In this paper, a numerical study was carried out to simulate and to find out the optimum design for plate type storage filled with phase change material (PCM) which is used in night ventilation systems. The effect of different parameters such as thickness of PCM-plates, inlet air temperature and air mass flow rates on melting front, cooling power, outlet temperature and thermal performance of heat exchanger was studied. The results showed that cooling power can be increased by increasing the mass flow rate. Also, the thickness of the plates in the storage device plays an important role in the thermal performance of the unit and has a linear relation with the melting process duration of PCM for considered configuration.  相似文献

Thermal performance of a hybrid space-cooling system with night ventilation and thermal storage using shape-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) is investigated numerically. A south-facing room of an office building in Beijing is analyzed, which includes SSPCM plates as the inner linings of walls and the ceiling. Natural cool energy is charged to SSPCM plates by night ventilation with air change per hour (ACH) of 40 h−1 and is discharged to room environment during daytime. Additional cool-supply is provided by an active system during office hours (8:00-18:00) necessary to keep the maximum indoor air temperature below 28 °C. Unsteady simulation is carried out using a verified enthalpy model, with a time period covering the whole summer season. The results indicate that the thermal-storage effect of SSPCM plates combined with night ventilation could improve the indoor thermal-comfort level and save 76% of daytime cooling energy consumption (compared with the case without SSPCM and night ventilation) in summer in Beijing. The electrical COPs of night ventilation (the reduced cooling energy divided by fan power) are 7.5 and 6.5 for cases with and without SSPCM, respectively.  相似文献

The mixture of capric acid and lauric acid (C-L acid), with the respective mole composition of 65% and 35%, is a potential phase change material (PCM). Its melting point of 18.0°C, however, is considered high for cooling application of thermal energy storage. The thermophysical and heat transfer characteristics of the C-L acid with some organic additives are investigated. Compatibility of C-L acid combinations with additives in different proportions and their melting characteristics are analyzed using the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Among the chemical additives, methyl salicylate, eugenol, and cineole presented the relevant melting characteristics. The individual heat transfer behavior and thermal storage performance of 0.1 mole fraction of these additives in the C-L acid mixture are evaluated. The radial and axial temperature distribution during charging and discharging at different concentrations of selected PCM combinations are experimentally determined employing a vertical cylindrical shell and tube heat exchanger. The methyl salicylate in theC-L acid provided the most effective additive in the C-L acid. It demonstrated the least melting band width aimed at lowering the melting point of the C-L acid with the highest heat of fusion value with relatively comparable rate of heat transfer. Furthermore, the thermal performance based on the total amount of transferred energy and their rates, established the PCM’s latent heat storage capability.  相似文献
