Al + SiC, Al + Al2O3 composites as well as pure Al, SiC, and Al2O3 coatings were prepared on Si substrates by the cold gas dynamic spray process (CGDS or cold spray). The powder composition of metal (Al) and ceramic (SiC, Al2O3) was varied into 1:1 and 10:1 wt.%, respectively. The propellant gas was air heated up to 330 °C and the gas pressure was fixed at 0.7 MPa. SiC and Al2O3 have been successfully sprayed producing coatings with more than 50 μm in thickness with the incorporation of Al as a binder. Also, hard ceramic particles showed peening effects on the coating surfaces. In the case of pure Al metal coating, there was no crater formation on hard Si substrates. However, when Al mixed with SiC and Al2O3, craters were observed and their quantities and sizes depended on the composition, aggregation and size of raw materials.  相似文献

In previous studies, it has been demonstrated that nanostructured Al2O3-13 wt.%TiO2 coatings deposited via air plasma spray (APS) exhibit higher wear resistance when compared to that of conventional coatings. This study aimed to verify if high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)-sprayed Al2O3-13 wt.%TiO2 coatings produced using hybrid (nano + submicron) powders could improve even further the already recognized good wear properties of the APS nanostructured coatings. According to the abrasion test results (ASTM G 64), there was an improvement in wear performance by a factor of 8 for the HVOF-sprayed hybrid coating as compared to the best performing APS conventional coating. When comparing both hybrid and conventional HVOF-sprayed coatings, there was an improvement in wear performance by a factor of 4 when using the hybrid material. The results show a significant antiwear improvement provided by the hybrid material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at low/high magnifications showed the distinctive microstructure of the HVOF-sprayed hybrid coating, which helps to explain its excellent wear performance. The starting materials of Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles were agglomerated into sprayable feedstock powders and plasma sprayed to form nanostructured coatings. There were net structures and fused structures in plasma sprayed nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings. The net structures were derived from partially melted feedstock powders and the fused structures were derived from fully melted feedstock powders. The nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings possessed higher hardness, bonding strength and crack growth resistance than conventional Metco 130 coatings which were mainly composed of lamellar fused structures. The higher toughness and strength of nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings were mainly related to the obtained net structures.  相似文献

Al2O3 /xZrO2 (where x = 0, 3, 13, and 20 wt.%) composite coatings were deposited onto mild steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying of mixed α-Al2O3 and nano-sized monoclinic-ZrO2 powders. Microstructural investigation showed that the coatings comprised well-separated Al2O3 and ZrO2 lamellae, pores, and partially molten particles. The coating comprised mainly of metastable γ-Al2O3 and tetragonal-ZrO2 with trace of original α-Al2O3 and monoclinic-ZrO2 phases. The effect of ZrO2 addition on the properties of coatings were investigated in terms of microhardness, fracture toughness, and wear behavior. It was found that ZrO2 improved the fracture toughness, reduced friction coefficient, and wear rate of the coatings.  相似文献

High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray has been successfully used to deposit yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. Adherent coatings were obtained within a limited range of spray conditions using hydrogen as fuel gas. Spray parameters such as hydrogen-to-oxygen ratio, spray distance, and substrate cooling were investigated. Spray distance was found to have a pronounced effect on coating quality; adherent coatings were obtained for spray distances between 75 and 125 mm from the gun exit for the hydrogen-to-oxygen ratios explored. Compared to air plasma spray (APS) deposited YSZ coatings, the HVOF deposited coatings were more fully stabilized in the tetragonal phase, and of similar density, surface roughness, and cross-sectional microhardness. Notably, fracture surfaces of the HVOF coatings revealed a more homogeneous structure. Many theoretical models predict that it should not be possible to melt YSZ in an HVOF flame, and therefore it should not be possible to deposit viable YSZ coatings by this process. The experimental results in the present work clearly contradict those expectations. The present results can be explained by taking into account the effect of partial melting and sintering on particle cohesion, as follows. Combustion chamber pressures (P o) of ∼3.9 bar (58.8 psi) realized during HVOF gun operation allows adiabatic flame temperature values that are above the zirconia melting temperature. Under these conditions, the Ranz-Marshall heat transfer model predicts HVOF sprayed particle surface temperatures T p that are high enough for partial melting of small (∼10 μm) zirconia particles, T p=(1.10−0.95)T m. Further analysis shows that for larger particles (38 μm), adherent coatings are produced when the particle temperature, T p=0.59−0.60 T m, suggesting that sintering may have a role in zirconia particle deposition during HVOF spray. These results suggest two different bonding mechanisms for powders having a broad particle size distribution.  相似文献

Compositions in the system Cr2O3-TiO2-Al2O3 are among the most used ceramic materials for thermally sprayed coating solutions. Cr2O3 coatings present good sliding wear resistance; Al2O3 coatings show excellent insulation behavior and TiO2 striking corrosion properties. In order to combine these properties, coatings containing more than one oxide are highly interesting. The conventional spraying process is limited to the availability of binary feedstock powders with defined compositions. The use of suspensions offers the opportunity for tailor-made chemical compositions: within the triangle of Cr2O3-TiO2-Al2O3, each mixture of oxides can be created. Criteria for the selection of raw materials as well as the relevant aspects for the development of binary suspensions in the Cr2O3-TiO2-Al2O3 system to be used as feedstock for thermal spraying are presented. This formulation of binary suspensions required the development of water-based single-oxide suspensions with suitable behavior; otherwise, the interaction between the particles while mixing could lead up to a formation of agglomerates, which affect both the stability of the spray process and the coating properties. For the validation of this formulation procedure, binary Cr2O3-TiO2 and Al2O3-TiO2 suspensions were developed and sprayed using the S-HVOF process. The binary coatings were characterized and discussed in terms of microstructure and microhardness.  相似文献

LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material was surface-treated to improve its electrochemical performance. Al2O3 nanoparticles were coated onto the surface of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 powder using a sol-gel method. The as-prepared Al2O3 nano-particle was identified as the cubic structure of Al2O3. XRD showed that the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 structure was not affected by the Al2O3 coating. With a coating of 3 wt.% Al2O3 on LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, the cyclic-life performance and rate capability were improved. However, heavier coatings (5 wt.%) on LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 resulted in a considerable decrease of the discharge capacity and rate capability. The thermal stability of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials was greatly improved by the 3 wt.% Al2O3 coating.  相似文献

The photoelectrochemical characteristics of plasma-sprayed porous TiO2, TiO2-5%ZnO, and TiO2-10%ZnO electrodes in 0.1 N NaOH solution were studied through a three-electrode cell system. The microstructure, morphology, and composition of the electrodes were analyzed using an electron probe surface roughness analyzer (ERA-8800FE), scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the sprayed electrodes have a porous microstructure, which is affected by the plasma spray parameters and composition of the powders. The TiO2-ZnO electrodes consist of anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2, and Zn2Ti3O8 phase. The photoresponse characteristics of the plasma-sprayed electrodes are comparable to those of single-crystal TiO2, but the breakdown voltage is close to 0.5 V (versus that of a saturated calomel electrode). The short-circuit photocurrent density (J SC) increases with a decrease of donor concentration, which was calculated according to the Gartner-Butler model. For the lowest donor concentration of a TiO2-5%ZnO electrode sprayed under an arc current of 600 A, the short-circuit J SC is approximately 0.4 mA/cm2 higher than that of the TiO2 electrodes under 30 mW/cm2 xenon light irradiation. The J SC increases linearly with light intensity. Aluminum (Al) alloy 7075 reinforced with Al2O3 particles was prepared using the stir casting method. The microstructure of the cast composites showed some degree of porosity and sites of Al2O3 particle clustering, especially at high-volume fractions of Al2O3 particles. Different squeeze pressures (25 and 50 MPa) were applied to the cast composite during solidification to reduce porosity and particle clusters. Microstructure examinations of the squeeze cast composites showed remarkable grain refining compared with that of the matrix alloy. As the volume fraction of particles and applied squeeze pressure increased, the hardness linearly increased. This increase was related to the modified structure and the decrease in the porosity. The effect of particle volume fraction and squeeze pressure on the dry-sliding wear of the composites was studied. Experiments were performed at 10, 30, and 50 N with a sliding speed of 1 m/s using a pin-on-ring apparatus. Increasing the particle volume fraction and squeeze pressure improved the wear resistance of the composite compared with that of the monolithic alloy, because the Al2O3 particles acted as load-bearing constituents. Also, these results can be attributed to the fact that the application of squeeze pressure during solidification led to a reduction in the porosity, and an increase in the solidification rate, leading to a finer structure. Moreover, the application of squeeze pressure improved the interface strength between the matrix and Al2O3 particles by elimination of the porosity at the interface, thereby providing better mechanical locking.  相似文献

In this paper, investigation into solid particle erosion behavior of atmospheric plasma-sprayed composite coating of CoCrAlY reinforced with Al2O3 and CeO2 oxides on Superni 76 at elevated temperature of 600 °C is presented. Alumina particles are used as erodent at two impact angles of 30° and 90°. The microstructure, porosity, hardness, toughness and adhesion properties of the as-sprayed coatings are studied. The effects of temperature and phase transformation in the coatings during erosion process are analyzed using XRD and EDS techniques. Optical profilometer is used for accurate elucidation of erosion volume loss. CoCrAlY/CeO2 coating showed better erosion resistance with a volume loss of about 50% of what was observed in case of CoCrAlY/Al2O3/YSZ coating. Lower erosion loss is observed at 90° as compared to 30° impact angle. The erosion mechanism evaluated using SEM micrograph revealed that the coatings experienced ductile fracture exhibiting severe deformation with unusual oxide cracks. Reinforced metal oxides provide shielding effect for erodent impact, enabling better erosion resistance. The oxidation of the coating due to high-temperature exposure reforms erosion process into oxidation-modified erosion process.  相似文献

Metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structures containing Ge nanocrystals embedded in both Al2O3 and ZrO2/Al2O3 are fabricated by an ultra-high vacuum electron-beam evaporation method. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) results indicate that Ge embedded in Al2O3 diffuses towards the surface of the Al2O3 layer after annealing at 800°C in N2 ambient for 30 min. Ge embedded in ZrO2/Al2O3 is stable, thus inducing less leakage current. Capacitance voltage studies indicate that annealing can effectively passivate the negatively charged trapping centers. Memory effect of the Ge nanoclusters is verified by hysteresis in the C-V curves in the Al2O3/Ge+Al2O3/Al2O3 and ZrO2/Ge+Al2O3/Al2O3 samples. Nanostructured and conventional Al2O3-13wt.%TiO2 ceramic coatings were prepared by plasma spraying with nanostructured agglomerated and conventional powders, respectively. The microstructure and microhardness of the coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and microhardness measurement. Meanwhile, the friction and wear behaviors were analyzed and compared using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The results show that the conventional coating has lamellar stacking characteristic and has some pores. However, the nanostructured coating shows a bimodal microstructure, which is composed of both fully melted regions and partially melted regions. According to the microstructural difference, the partially melted regions can be divided into liquid-phase sintered regions (a three-dimensional net or skeleton-like structure: Al2O3-rich submicron particles embedded in the TiO2-rich matrix) and solid-phase sintered regions (remained nanoparticles). The microstructural characteristics of the liquid-phase sintered region are formed due to the selective melting of TiO2 nanoparticles during plasma spraying. On the other hand, the TiO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles of the solid-phase sintered regions are all unmelted during plasma spraying. Due to the existence of nanostructured microstructures, the nanostructured coating has a higher microhardness, a lower friction coefficient, and a better wear resistance than the conventional coating.

Al2O3/ZrO2/Al2O3 gate stacks were prepared on ultrathin SOI (Silicon on insulator) substrates by ultrahigh vacuum electron beam evaporation and post-annealed in N2 at 450°C for 30 min. Three clear nanolaminate layered structure of Al2O3(2.1 nm)/ZrO2(3.5 nm)/Al2O3(2.3 nm) was observed with a high-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscope (HR-XTEM). High frequency capacitance voltage (C-V) characteristics of a fully depleted (FD) SOI MOS capacitor at 1 and 5 MHz were studied. The minority carriers determine the high frequency C-V properties, which is opposite to the case of bulk MOS capacitors. The series resistance of the SOI substrate is found to be the determinant factor of the high frequency characteristics of FD SOI MOS capacitors. Air plasma-sprayed conventional alumina-titania (Al2O3-13wt.%TiO2) coatings have been used for many years in the thermal spray industry for antiwear applications, mainly in the paper, printing, and textile industries. This work proposes an alternative to the traditional air plasma spraying of conventional aluminatitania by high-velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) spraying of nanostructured titania (TiO2). The microstructure, porosity, hardness (HV 300 g), crack propagation resistance, abrasion behavior (ASTM G65), and wear scar characteristics of these two types of coatings were analyzed and compared. The HVOF-sprayed nanostructured titania coating is nearly pore-free and exhibits higher wear resistance when compared with the air plasma-sprayed conventional alumina-titania coating. The nanozones in the nanostructured coating act as crack arresters, enhancing its toughness. By comparing the wear scar of both coatings (via SEM, stereoscope microscopy, and roughness measurements), it is observed that the wear scar of the HVOF-sprayed nanostructured titania is very smooth, indicating plastic deformation characteristics, whereas the wear scar of the air plasma-sprayed alumina-titania coating is very rough and fractured. This is considered to be an indication of a superior machinability of the nanostructured coating.  相似文献

Graphite is one of the candidate materials proposed for application in pyrochemical reprocessing plants involving aggressive molten chloride environment. Post treatments are promising techniques for the improvement of properties of thermal spray coatings for different industrial applications. In the present work, the effect of post treatments like vacuum annealing (VA) and laser melting (LM) on the microstructure and chemical modification of plasma sprayed Al2O3-40 wt.% TiO2 coatings over high density (HD) graphite substrates has been investigated. When compared with sprayed coatings (SC), VA coatings showed cluster morphology and LM coatings exhibited homogenous microstructure. On laser melted surfaces networks of cracks were observed. XRD studies showed that the metastable γ-Al2O3 phase present in the SC is transformed to stable α-Al2O3 after post treatments. In LM coatings Al2TiO5 phase was more predominant in contrast to SC and VA coatings. The microhardness enhancement was observed in case of LM coating compared to the VA and SC. Due to elimination of coating defects in LM samples, there is a considerable reduction in the surface roughness.  相似文献

Low-power plasma-sprayed FeCrAl/Al2O3 composite coatings with 1.5 mm thickness have been fabricated for radar absorption applications. The effects of FeCrAl content on the coating properties were studied. The FeCrAl presents in the form of a few thin lamellae and numerous particles, demonstrating relatively even distribution in all the coatings. Results show that the micro-hardness and porosity decrease with the increase in FeCrAl content. With FeCrAl content increasing from 28 to 47 wt.%, the bonding strength of the coatings with 1.5 mm thickness increases from 10.5 to 27 MPa, and the failure modes are composed of cohesive and adhesive failure, which are ascribed to the coating microstructure and the residual stress, respectively.  相似文献

Two 75%Cr3C2-25%NiCr feedstock powders with the same size distribution but different production process were characterized and found quite different in terms of morphology and phase composition. The powders were sprayed in a HVOF Diamond Jet (Sulzer Metco DJ-2600) torch with five different values of the oxygen-to-hydrogen ratio in order to assess the influence of this parameter on the microstructure and properties of the coatings. The results show that the closed and dense microstructure of one powder (Woka 7302) results in coatings with lower amount of decarburization, less oxide formation and higher toughness compared to coatings from the other powder (Praxair 1375). It was found that the O2/H2 ratio impacts mainly on the Young’s modulus, which almost doubled by changing the ratio from 0.40 to 0.50, and on toughness, but does not notably affect the Vickers hardness.  相似文献

Recently, extensive efforts have been made to develop new thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials which can operate at temperatures above 1523 K over a long term. In this article, LaTi2Al9O19 (LTA) was synthesized by solid-state reaction at 1773 K, and the mechanical properties of the LTA bulk were evaluated. The microhardness is about 14 GPa, comparable to that of YSZ bulk, whereas the Young’s modulus is about 44 GPa, lower than the value of YSZ. However, the fracture toughness of 0.8-1 MPa m1/2 is much lower than that of bulk YSZ. A double-ceramic-layer LTA/YSZ TBC structure was proposed and the TBC sprayed by plasma spraying. Thermal cycling tests of the TBC specimens were performed at 1373 K with a dwell time of 10 min. The LTA remained good stability with ZrO2 and Al2O3. However, the single layer LTA TBC was cracked at the LTA/bond coat interface after about 300 cycles, due to its poor thermal shock resistance, while the YSZ TBC yielded a lifetime of about 1000 cycles. The LTA/YSZ TBC remained intact even after 3000 cycles, exhibiting a promising potential as new TBC materials.  相似文献

Lanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7) has been proposed as a promising thermal barrier coating (TBC) material due to its low thermal conductivity and high stability at high temperatures. In this work, both single and double-ceramic-layer (DCL) TBC systems of La2Zr2O7 and 8 wt.% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) were prepared using air plasma spray (APS) technique. The thermomechanical properties and microstructure were investigated. Thermal gradient mechanical fatigue (TGMF) tests were applied to investigate the thermal cycling performance. The results showed that DCL La2Zr2O7 + 8YSZ TBC samples lasted fewer cycles compared with single-layered 8YSZ TBC samples in TGMF tests. This is because DCL La2Zr2O7 TBC samples had higher residual stress during the thermal cycling process, and their fracture toughness was lower than that of 8YSZ. Bond strength test results showed that 8YSZ TBC samples had higher bond strength compared with La2Zr2O7. The erosion rate of La2Zr2O7 TBC samples was higher than that of 8YSZ samples, due to the lower critical erodent velocity and fracture toughness of La2Zr2O7. DCL porous 8YSZ + La2Zr2O7 had a lower erosion rate than other SCL and DCL La2Zr2O7 coatings, suggesting that porous 8YSZ serves as a stress-relief buffer layer.  相似文献
