Summary: Temperature‐responsive hydrogels based on linear HPC and crosslinked P(NTBA‐co‐AAm) were prepared by the semi‐IPN technique. The structure of these semi‐IPN hydrogels was investigated by FT‐IR spectroscopy. An increase in normalized band ratios (A2980/A1665) was observed with increasing HPC content in the initial mixture. The swelling kinetics and water transport mechanism of these semi‐IPN hydrogels were examined and their temperature responsive behaviors were also investigated by measuring equilibrium swelling ratios and pulsatile swelling experiments. The results showed that these semi‐IPN hydrogels underwent a volume phase transition between 18 and 22 °C irrespective of the amounts of MBAAm and HPC. However, below the volume phase transition temperature, their equilibrium swelling ratios were affected by the amount of MBAAm and HPC. The pulsatile swelling experiments indicated that the lower the MBAAm and the higher HPC contents in semi‐IPN hydrogels the faster the response rate temperature change.

Temperature‐ and pH‐responsive semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels constructed with chitosan and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were studied. The characterizations of semi‐IPN hydrogels were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). IPN hydrogels exhibited a relatively high swelling ratio, 23.31%–145.20% at room temperature. The swelling ratio of hydrogels depends on pH and temperature. DSC was used to determine the amount of free water in IPN hydrogels. The amount of free water increased with increasing chitosan content in the semi‐IPN hydrogels. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new strategy was used to prepare a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN)–like poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) polymeric hydrogel, consisting of either low (2300) or high (33,000) molecular weight linear PNIPAAm chains and the crosslinked PNIPAAm network. The properties of the resulting PNIPAAm hydrogels were characterized by DSC and SEM as well as their swelling ratios at various temperatures, the deswelling in hot water (48°C), and the oscillating shrinking–swelling properties within small temperature cycles. It was found that the deswelling rate of these semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels was improved if the molecular weight and/or composition of the linear PNIPAAm chains within the semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels were increased. This improved deswelling rate was attributed to the fast response nature of the linear PNIPAAm chains and the increased pore number in the matrix network, which provided numerous water channels for the water to diffuse out during the deswelling process at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amino semitelechelic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was prepared by radical polymerization with aminoethanethiol hydrochloride as a chain‐transfer agent. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels, composed of alginate and amine‐terminated PNIPAAm, were prepared by crosslinking with calcium chloride. From the swelling behaviors of semi‐IPNs at various pH's and Fourier transform infrared spectra at high temperatures, the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex was confirmed from the reaction between carboxyl groups in alginate and amino groups in modified PNIPAAm. Semi‐IPN hydrogels reached an equilibrium swelling state within 24 h. The water state in hydrogels, investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, showed that sample CAN55 [alginate/PNIPAAm (w/w) = 50/50] exhibited the lowest equilibrium water content and free water content among the hydrogels tested, which was attributed to its more compact structure compared to other samples and the high content of interchain bonding within the hydrogels. Alginate/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited a reasonable sensitivity to the temperature, pH, and ionic strength of swelling medium. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature‐ and pH‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels, with sodium alginate (SA) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), constructed by a sequential IPN method, were studied. The characterizations of the IPN hydrogels were investigated by FTIR, DSC, and swelling tests under various conditions. The prepared IPN hydrogels exhibited relatively high swelling ratios, in the range of 380–690%, at 25°C. The swelling ratios of SA/PDADMAC IPN hydrogels were pH and temperature dependent. DSC was used for the quantitative determination of the freezing and nonfreezing water contents of the hydrogels. The amount of free water increased with the increasing PDADMAC content of the IPN hydrogels. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 3705–3709, 2004  相似文献

pH‐ and temperature‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on soy protein and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) were successfully prepared. The structure and properties of the hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The equilibrium and dynamic swelling/deswelling behaviors and the drug release properties of the hydrogels responding to pH and/or temperature were also studied in detail. The hydrogels have the porous honeycomb structures, good miscibility and thermal stability, and good pH‐ and temperature‐responsivity. The volume phase transition temperature of the hydrogels is ca. 40°C. Changing the soy protein or crosslinker content could be used to control the swelling behavior and water retention, and the hydrogels have the fastest deswelling rate in pH 1.2 buffer solutions at 45°C. Bovine serum albumin release from the hydrogels has the good pH and temperature dependence. The results show that the proposed IPN hydrogels may have potential applications in the field of biomedical materials such as in drug delivery systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)/chitosan (CS) semi‐interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel particles were prepared by inverse suspension polymerization. The prepared particles were sensitive to both temperature and pH, and they had good reversibility in solution at different temperatures and pH values. The swelling ratios of PNIPAAm/CS hydrogel particles decreased slightly with the addition of CS, which did not shift the lower critical solution temperature. The drug‐release behavior of the particles was investigated using cyclic adenosine 3′,5′‐monophosphate (cAMP) as a model drug. The release of cAMP from the hydrogel particles was affected by temperature, pH, and the CS content in the particles. These results showed that semi‐IPN hydrogel particles appeared to be of great promise in pH‐ and temperature‐sensitive oral drug release. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs), composed of chitosan and poly(hydroxy ethyl methacrylate) hydrogels, were prepared and the effects of various pH, temperatures, and an electric‐field on the swollen hydrogels were investigated. The swelling kinetics increased rapidly, reaching equilibrium within 60 min. Semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited relatively high swelling ratios, 150~350%. The swelling ratio increased when the pH of the buffer was below pH 7 as a result of the dissociation of ionic bonds. Semi‐IPN hydrogels showed electroresponsiveness by shrinking when an electric field was applied. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 86–92, 2005  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of silk sericin (SS) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared simultaneously. The properties of the resultant IPN hydrogels were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and SEM as well as their swelling behavior at various temperatures and pH values. The single glass transition temperature (Tg) presented in the IPN thermograms indicated that SS and PNIPAAm form a miscible pair. The swollen morphology of the IPNs observed by SEM demonstrated that water channels (pores present in SEM micrographs) were distributed homogeneously through out the network membranes. The swelling ratio of the IPNs depended significantly on the composition, temperature and pH of the buffer solutions. The dynamic transport of water into the IPN membrane was analyzed based on the Fickian equation. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) and fully interpenetrating polymer network (full‐IPN) hydrogels composed of alginate and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared with γ‐ray irradiation. The semi‐IPN hydrogels were prepared through the irradiation of a mixed solution composed of alginate and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer to simultaneously achieve the polymerization and self‐crosslinking of NIPAAm. The full‐IPN hydrogels were formed through the immersion of the semi‐IPN film in a calcium‐ion solution. The results for the swelling and deswelling behaviors showed that the swelling ratio of semi‐IPN hydrogels was higher than that of full‐IPN hydrogels. A semi‐IPN hydrogel containing more alginate exhibited relatively rapid swelling and deswelling rates, whereas a full‐IPN hydrogel showed an adverse tendency. All the hydrogels with NIPAAm exhibited a change in the swelling ratio around 30–40°C, and full‐IPN hydrogels showed more sensitive and reversible behavior than semi‐IPN hydrogels under a stepwise stimulus. In addition, the swelling ratio of the hydrogels continuously increased with the pH values, and the swelling processes were proven to be repeatable with pH changes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) poly(AAm‐co‐SMA) were prepared by the semi IPN method. These IPN hydrogels were prepared by polymerizing aqueous solution of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate, using ammonium persulphate/N,N,N1,N1‐tetramethylethylenediamine (APS/TMEDA) initiating system and N,N1‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker in the presence of a host polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol). The influence of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of PVA, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and reaction temperature, on the swelling behavior of these IPNs was investigated in detail. The results showed that the IPN hydrogels exhibited different swelling behavior as the reaction conditions varied. To verify the structural difference in the IPN hydrogels, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the morphological changes in the IPN as the concentration of crosslinker varied. In addition to MBA, two other crosslinkers were also employed in the preparation of IPNs to illustrate the difference in their swelling phenomena. The swelling kinetics, equilibrium water content, and water transport mechanism of all the IPN hydrogels were investigated. IPN hydrogels being ionic in nature, the swelling behavior was significantly affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, ionic strength, and pH of the swelling medium. Further, their swelling behavior was also examined in different physiological bio‐fluids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 302–314, 2005  相似文献

Hydrogels have been widely used as mild biomaterials due to their bio‐affinity, high drug loading capability and controllable release profiles. However, hydrogel‐based carriers are greatly limited for the delivery of hydrophobic payloads due to the lack of hydrophobic binding sites. Herein, nano‐liposome micelles were embedded in semi‐interpenetrating poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐chitosan] (PNIPAAm‐co‐CS) and poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(sodium alginate)] (PNIPAAm‐co‐SA) hydrogels which were responsive to both temperature and pH, thereby establishing tunable nanocomposite hydrogel delivery systems. Nano‐micelles formed via the self‐assembly of phospholipid could serve as the link between hydrophobic drug and hydrophilic hydrogel due to their special amphiphilic structure. The results of transmission and scanning electron microscopies and infrared spectroscopy showed that the porous hydrogels were successfully fabricated and the liposomes encapsulated with baicalein could be well contained in the network. In addition, the experimental results of response release in vitro revealed that the smart hydrogels showed different degree of sensitiveness under different pH and temperature stimuli. The results of the study demonstrate that combining PNIPAAm‐co‐SA and PNIPAAm‐co‐CS hydrogels with liposomes encapsulated with hydrophobic drugs is a feasible method for hydrophobic drug delivery and have potential application prospects in the medical field. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels composed of poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEtOz) and chitosan (CS) were prepared with radical polymerization and were characterized for their swelling properties. Sample OC11 (hydrogel weight ratio PEtOz/CS = 1/1) swelled more than samples OC21 (PEtOz/CS = 2/1) and OC31 (PEtOz/CS =3/1), exhibiting a swelling ratio of about 2000 wt % in deionized water; the swelling ratios of the other samples were about 1000 and 700 wt %. The swelling behavior of the IPN hydrogels was observed under various pH and temperature conditions. The swelling ratios of the samples ranged from about 2000 to 6500 wt % at lower pHs, with a maximum swelling ratio of about 6500 wt % in a pH 2 aqueous solution. They exhibited low critical solution temperature behavior, with sample OC31 more sensitive to temperature and sample OC11 more sensitive to pH. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive semi‐interpenetrating nanocomposite hydrogels (NC hydrogels) were prepared with surface‐functionalized graphene oxide (GO) as the crosslinker, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the monomer, and chitosan (CS) as an additive. The effects of 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate‐modified GO sheets and CS content on various physical properties were investigated. Results show that PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels undergo a large volumetric change in response to temperature. Swelling ratios of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels are much larger than those of the conventional organically crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogels. The deswelling test indicates that the deswelling rate was greatly enhanced by incorporating CS into the hydrogel network and using the surface‐functionalized GO as the crosslinker. The pH‐sensitivity of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels is evident below their volume phase transition temperature. Moreover, the PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels have a much better mechanical property compared with traditional hydrogels even in a high water content of 90%. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels, with acrylic acid (AA) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDMDAAC), were constructed by a sequential IPN method. The characterizations of the IPN hydrogels were investigated by FTIR, DTA, and swelling tests under various conditions. The prepared semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited relatively high swelling capacity, in the range of 477–630 g/g at 25°C. The results show that the swelling capacity of AA/PDMDAAC semi‐IPN hydrogels was pH and temperature dependent. Swelling behaviors were also studied in the different salt solutions. Nanogels with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure based on poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were synthesized by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid and N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide within the PNIPAM nanogels. Their IPN structure was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy after staining by uranyl acetate. The temperature‐ or pH‐dependent hydrodynamic diameters measured using dynamic laser light scattering show that the IPN nanogels have pH and temperature dual stimuli‐responsive properties. As compared to previously reported pH/temperature dual stimuli‐responsive nanogels, these IPN nanogels have the advantage of less mutual interference between the temperature‐responsive and pH‐responsive components, which is beneficial for their applications in controlled drug release and sensors. The temperature‐ and pH‐triggered volume phase transition mechanisms of the IPN nanogels were tested by probing the microenvironment change of their PNIPAM and PAA chains upon phase transition using infrared (IR) absorption spectra measured at different pH values and IR difference spectra obtained by subtracting the IR spectrum obtained before temperature‐induced phase transition from that obtained after phase transition. Temperature‐sensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels were successfully synthesized by using poly(ethylene oxide) as the interpenetrating agent. The newly prepared semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels exhibited much better properties as temperature‐sensitive polymers than they did in the past. Characterizations of the IPN hydrogels were investigated using a swelling experiment, FTIR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited a relatively high temperature dependent swelling ratio in the range of 23–28 at room temperature. A series of novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of poly[(acrylamide)‐co‐(sodium acrylate)] with varying amounts (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of poly[(vinylsulfonic acid), sodium salt] was synthesized. The semi‐IPN hydrogels were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The swelling behavior of these IPNs was studied in distilled water/physiological solutions/buffer solutions/salt solutions. As the amount of poly[(vinylsulfonic acid), sodium salt] increased in the network, the swelling capacity of the semi‐IPNs increased considerably. The swelling and diffusion characteristics such as water penetration velocity (v), diffusion exponent (n), and diffusion coefficient (D) were calculated in distilled water, as well as in other physiological solutions. The highest swelling capacity was noted in urea and glucose solutions. The semi‐IPN hydrogels followed non‐Fickian diffusion behavior in water and physiological fluids, whereas Fickian behavior was observed in buffer solutions. The stimuli‐responsive characteristics towards physiological fluids, salt concentration, and temperature of these semi‐IPN hydrogels were also investigated. The swelling behavior of the semi‐IPNs decreased markedly with an increase of the concentration of the salt solutions. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of temperature‐ and pH‐responsive hydrogels were prepared from acrylic acid (AAc), acrylamide (AAm), oligo(ethylene glycol)monoacrylate (OEGMA), and oligo(ethylene glycol)diacrylate by varying the AAc:AAm molar ratio and the OEGMA content. Phase‐transition temperatures and swelling ratios of the obtained poly(AAc‐co‐AAm)‐graft‐OEG gels were measured as a function of temperature and pH. At pH < 5, the obvious transition temperatures ranging from 5 to 35°C were obtained as the AAc : AAm molar ratio was varied. The highest transition temperature was obtained at the AAc : AAm ratios of 5 : 5 and 6 : 4, and the sharp transition curves were observed at the AAc : AAm ratios from 5 : 5 to 8 : 2. The transition temperature further increased with increasing OEGMA content. It was suggested that OEG graft chains with a large mobility played an important role for the formation of hydrogen bonding in the hydrogels. The gels prepared here showed obvious reproducibility of the phase transition in response to temperature changes, which suggests the feasibility of their practical applications. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
