Elongated mullite was synthesized using mullite powder as a raw material and AlF3·3H2O as an additive, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of AlF3·3H2O content and reaction temperature on the formation of elongated mullite were investigated, and the relevant growth mechanism was discussed based on the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. When the optimal amount of AlF3·3H2O (4?wt% in the present work) was used, the length and diameter of elongated mullite increased with increasing the reaction temperature, and elongated mullite of 22.3?µm in average length and 4.6?µm in average diameter was formed after 5?h at 1873?K. Based on the results, elongated mullite self-reinforced porous ceramics were prepared by a combined foam-gelcasting and solid-reaction method, and their mechanical properties were examined. Elongated mullite in-situ formed in the porous samples evidently enhanced their mechanical strength. The flexural strength of the elongated mullite self-reinforced porous sample with 67.0% porosity (prepared using 6?wt% AlF3·3H2O) was as high as 13.9?MPa, which was about 26.4% higher than that of a porous sample (11.0?MPa) prepared without AlF3·3H2O.  相似文献

Mullite-whisker-reinforced anorthite-mullite-corundum porous ceramics were prepared from construction waste and Al2O3 powder by adding AlF3 and MoO3 as the additive and crystallization catalyst, respectively. The effects of AlF3 and MoO3 content on the properties of mullite whiskers, such as open porosity, mechanical properties, pore size distribution, microstructure and phase structure, were investigated in detail. The results showed that the morphology of the mullite whiskers and properties of the porous ceramics were greatly influenced by the AlF3 and MoO3 content. The specimen obtained by co-adding 12 wt% AlF3 and 3 wt% MoO3, and sintering at 1350 °C for 1 h, exhibited excellent properties, including an open porosity of 67.4±0.5% and biaxial flexural strength of 24.0±0.8 MPa. The mullite whiskers were uniformly distributed; the whiskers had a diameter of 0.05–0.5 µm, length of 8–10 µm, and aspect ratios (length to diameter ratio) of 20–30 on average.  相似文献

In this work, anorthite–mullite–corundum porous ceramics were prepared from construction waste and Al2O3 powders by adding AlF3 and MoO3 as mineralizer and crystallization catalyst, respectively. The effects of the sintering temperature and time on open porosity, mechanical properties, pore size distribution, microstructure, and phase composition were characterized in detail. The results showed that the formation of the mullite whiskers and the properties of the anorthite–mullite–corundum porous ceramics depended more on the sintering temperature than the holding time. By co-adding 12 wt% AlF3 and 4 wt% MoO3, mullite whiskers were successfully obtained at sintering temperatures upon 1350 °C for 1 h. Furthermore, the resultant specimens exhibited excellent properties, including open porosity of 66.1±0.7%, biaxial flexural strength of 23.8±0.9 MPa, and average pore size of 1.32 µm (the corresponding cumulative volume percent was 37.29%).  相似文献

Porous mullite ceramics were prepared via foam-gelcasting using industrial grade mullite powder as the main raw materials, Isobam-104 as the dispersing and gelling agent, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the foam stabilizing agent, and triethanolamine lauryl sulfate as the foaming agent. The effects of processing parameters such as type and amount of additive, solid loading level and gelling temperature on rheological properties and gelling behaviors of the slurries were investigated. The green samples after drying at 100 °C for 24 h were fired at 1600 °C for 2 h, and the microstructures and properties of the resultant porous ceramic samples were characterized. Based on the results, the effects of foaming agent on the porosity level, pore structure and size and mechanical properties of the as-prepared porous mullite ceramics were examined. Porosity levels and pore sizes of the as-prepared samples increased with increasing the foaming agent content up to 1.0%, above which both porosity levels and pore sizes did not change. The compressive strength and flexural strength of the as-prepared sample with porosity of 76% and average pore size of 313 μm remained as high as 15.3±0.3 MPa and 3.7±0.2 MPa, respectively, and permeability increased exponentially with increasing the porosity.  相似文献

Porous MgAl2O4 ceramics were prepared via a low cost foam-gelcasting route using MgAl2O4 powders as the main raw material, ammonium polyacrylate as a dispersant, a small amount of modified carboxymethyl cellulose as a gelling agent, and TH-IV polymer as a foaming agent. The effects of additive's content, solid loading and gelling temperature on slurry's rheological behavior were investigated, and microstructures and properties of as-prepared porous MgAl2O4 ceramics examined. Based on the results, the roles played by the foaming agent in the cases of porosity, pore structure, pore size, mechanical properties and thermal conductivity were clarified. Porosity and pore sizes of as-prepared porous MgAl2O4 ceramics increased with increasing the foaming agent from 0.05 to 0.6 vol%. Porous MgAl2O4 ceramics with porosity of 75.1% and average pore size of 266 µm exhibited a compressive strength as high as 12.5±0.8 MPa and thermal conductivity as low as 0.24 W/(m K) (at 473 K).  相似文献

Porous acicular mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) ceramics containing Cu3Mo2O9 as a soot oxidation catalyst was fabricated by a novel approach using commercial powders of Al2O3 and CuO, and powder obtained by controlled oxidation of ground waste MoSi2. The obtained material consisted of elongated mullite grains which are known to be effective in carbon soot removal from diesel engine exhaust. The presence of in situ created Cu3Mo2O9 was found to catalyze the carbon burnout which is an extremely important feature when it comes to filter regeneration, i.e., the captured soot removal. The carbon burnout temperature in the sample containing 12 wt% CuO was by 90 °C lower than that in the sample without CuO. Effect of sintering temperature as well as the effect of amount of CuO additive on mullite properties were studied. It was found that the increase in amount of CuO in samples sintered at 1300 °C decreased porosity and increased compressive strength of the porous mullite ceramics. The addition of 12 wt% CuO increased the strength of the porous mullite ceramics up to 70 MPa, whereas the porosity was reduced from 62% in the mullite without CuO to 44% in the mullite ceramics containing 12 wt% CuO. Although affected by the amount of CuO, the microstructure still consisted of elongated mullite grains.  相似文献

Low-cost porous mullite ceramic membrane supports were fabricated from recycling coal fly ash with addition of natural bauxite. V2O5 and AlF3 were used as additives to cause the growth of mullite crystals with various morphologies via an in situ reaction sintering. Dynamic sintering, microstructure and phase evolution of the membrane supports were characterized in detail and open porosity, pore size, gas permeation and mechanical properties were determined. It showed the membrane support with 3 wt.% V2O5 and 4 wt.% AlF3 addition exhibits an open porosity of ∼50%, mechanical strength of 69.8 ± 7.2 MPa, an interlocking microstructure composed of anisotropically grown mullite whiskers with an aspect ratio of 18.2 ± 3.6 at 1300 °C. Addition of more V2O5 lowered the secondary mullitization temperature, resulting in more mullite formation at lower temperatures. The fabricated membrane supports feature high porosity without mechanical strength degradation, possible strengthening mechanism of the mullite whiskers was further discussed.  相似文献

This new and economic approach to fabricate resistant porous membrane supports consists of Algerian kaolin and calcite (CaCO3) instead of Al2O3. The porous mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) and anorthite (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) based ceramics were obtained by solid state reaction. Different calcite amounts (10–28 wt%) have been added into kaolin halloysite type (Al2O3·2SiO2·4H2O) in order to control pores forming with appropriate distribution and sizes. Based on a pore distribution and formed phases, a kaolin + 15 wt% calcite (K15C) mixture was selected for flat and tubular configurations. A porosity of 45–52% was also obtained when K15C compacts were sintered at 1100–1250 °C. For example, porosity, average pore size (APS) and 3 point flexural strength were 49%, 3 μm and 87 MPa (same as Al2O3 value), respectively when K15C compacts were sintered at 1250 °C for 1 h. Finally, a correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties of elaborated supports has been discussed.  相似文献

Porous fibrous mullite ceramics with a narrow range of pore size distribution have been successfully prepared utilizing a near net-shape epoxy resin gel-casting process by using mullite fibers, Al2O3 and SiC as raw materials. The effects of sintering temperatures, different amounts of fibers and Y2O3 additive on the phase compositions, linear shrinkage, apparent porosity, bulk density, microstructure, compressive strength and thermal conductivity were investigated. The results indicated that mullite-bonded among fibers were formed in the porous fibrous mullite ceramics with a bird nest pore structure. After determining the sintering temperatures and the amount of fibers, the tailored porous fibrous mullite ceramics had a low linear shrinkage (1.36–3.08%), a high apparent porosity (61.1–71.7%), a relatively high compressive strength (4.4–7.6 MPa), a low thermal conductivity (0.378–0.467 W/m K) and a narrow range of pore size distribution (around 5 µm). The excellent properties will enable the porous ceramics as a promising candidate for the applications of hot gas filters, thermal insulation materials at high temperatures.  相似文献

Two Q[n]-based porous compounds, Q[5]·[PtCl6]2 ·2H3O·12H2O and 2Q[8]·[PtCl6]2 ·2H3O·74H2O in cooperating the hexachloroplatinate(IV) anion ([PtCl6]2 ) as an inorganic structure directing agent are demonstrated. The driving forces for the formation of such novel Q[n]-based porous compounds are considered to be the outer surface interactions of Q[n]s, including dipole interactions between Q[n]s and ion-dipole interactions between [PtCl6]2  anions and Q[n]s. Moreover, the Q[5]-based porous compound displays absorption distinctness for tetrachloromethane, whereas the Q[8]-based porous compound displays absorption distinctness for methanol.  相似文献

Excessive sintering shrinkage leads to severe deformation and cracking, affecting the microstructure and properties of porous ceramics. Therefore, reducing sintering shrinkage and achieving near-net-size forming is one of the effective ways to prepare high-performance porous ceramics. Herein, low-shrinkage porous mullite ceramics were prepared by foam-gelcasting using kyanite as raw material and aluminum fluoride (AlF3) as additive, through volume expansion from phase transition and gas generated from the reaction. The effects of AlF3 content on the shrinkage, porosity, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity of mullite-based porous ceramics were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of content, the sintering shrinkage decreased, the porosity increased, and mullite whiskers were produced. Porous mullite ceramics with 30 wt% AlF3 content exhibited a whisker structure with the lowest shrinkage of 3.5%, porosity of 85.2%, compressive strength of 3.06 ± 0.51 MPa, and thermal conductivity of 0.23 W/(m·K) at room temperature. The temperature difference between the front and back sides of the sample reached 710°C under high temperature fire resistance test. The low sintering shrinkage preparation process effectively reduces the subsequent processing cost, which is significant for the preparation of high-performance porous ceramics.  相似文献

For recycling waste refractory materials in metallurgical industry, porous alumina ceramics were prepared via pore forming agent method from α-Al2O3 powder and slide plate renewable material. Effects of slide plate renewable material (SPRM) on densification, mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, phase composition and microstructure of the porous alumina ceramics were investigated. The results showed that SPRM effectively affected physical and thermal properties of the porous ceramics. With the increase of SPRM, apparent porosity of the ceramic materials firstly increased and then decreased, which brought an opposite change for the bulk density and thermal conductivity values, whereas the bending strength didn’t decrease obviously. The optimum sample A2 with 50 wt% SPRM introducing sintered at 1500 °C obtained the best properties. The water absorption, apparent porosity, bulk density, bending strength and thermal conductivity of the sample were 31.7%, 62.8%, 1.71 g/cm3, 47.1 ± 3.7 MPa and 1.73 W/m K, respectively. XRD analysis indicated that a small quantity of silicon carbide and graphite in SPRM have been oxidized to SiO2 during the firing process, resulting in rising the porous microstructures. SEM micrographs illustrated that rod-like mullite grains combined with plate-like corundum grains to endow the samples with high bending strength. This study was intended to confirm the preparation of porous alumina ceramics with high porosity, good mechanical properties and low thermal conductivity by using SPRM as pore forming additive.  相似文献

Porous mullite ceramics with unidirectionally oriented pores were prepared by an extrusion method to investigate their capillary rise properties. Rayon fibers 16.5 μm in diameter and 800 μm long were used as the pore formers by kneading with alumina powder, kaolin clay, China earthen clay and binder with varying Fe2O3 contents of 0, 5 and 7 mass%. The resulting pastes were extruded into cylindrical tubes (outer diameter (OD) 30–50 mm and inner diameter (ID) 20–30 mm), dried at room temperature and fired at 1500 °C for 4 h. The bulk densities of the resulting porous ceramics ranged from 1.31 to 1.67 g/cm3, with apparent porosities of 43.2–59.3%. The pore size distributions measured by Hg porosimetry showed a sharp peak at 10.0 μm in the sample without Fe2O3 and at 15.6 μm in the samples containing Fe2O3; these pores, which arose from the burnt-out rayon fibers, corresponded to total pore volumes ranging from 0.24 to 0.34 ml/g. SEM showed a microstructure consisting of unidirectionally oriented pores in a porous mullite matrix. Prismatic mullite crystals were well developed on the surfaces of the pore walls owing to the liquid phase formed by the Fe2O3 component added to color the samples. The bending strengths of the tubular samples ranged from 15.6 to 26.3 MPa. The height of capillary rise, measured under controlled relative humidities (RH) of 50, 65 and 85%, was greater in the ceramics containing Fe2O3 than in those without Fe2O3, especially in the thinner samples. The maximum capillary rise reached about 1300 mm, much higher than previously reported. This excellent capillary rise ability is thought to be due to the controlled pore size, pore distribution and pore orientation in these porous mullite ceramics.  相似文献

Production of porous anorthite ceramics from mixtures of paper processing residues and three different clays are investigated. Suitability of three different clays such as enriched clay, commercial clay and fireclay for manufacturing of anorthite based lightweight refractory bricks was studied. Porous character to the ceramic was provided by addition of paper processing residues (PPR). Samples with 30–40 wt% PPR fired at 1200–1400 °C contained anorthite (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) as major phase and some minor secondary phases such as mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) or gehlenite (2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2), depending on the calcite to clay ratio. Anorthite formation for all clay types was quite successful in samples with 30–40 wt% of paper residues fired at 1300 °C. A higher firing temperature of 1400 °C was needed for the fireclay added samples to produce a well sintered product with large pores. Gehlenite phase occurred mostly at lower temperatures and in samples containing higher amount of calcium (50 wt% PPR). Compressive strength of compacted and fired pellets consisting of mainly anorthite ranged from 8 to 43 MPa.  相似文献

Short mullite whiskers prepared by firing compacts of kaolin and NH4Al(SO4)2·12H2O powders, with a small addition (0.8, 1.5 wt%) of NaH2PO4·2H2O, in air 1300 and 1400 °C for 15 h have been characterized in terms of whisker morphology, composition and structure. Relatively uniform whisker shaped crystals grew within the silicate glass matrix. After chemically leaching the glass matrix with HF solution using a microwave heating source, the resulting whiskers were exposed as isolated crystals and exhibited an aspect ratio of >17 (~0.5 μm in diameter). The mullite whiskers had a composition of 51.06 mol% Al2O3 and 48.94 mol% SiO2, with an orthorhombic crystallographic structure.  相似文献

Monophasic mullite precursors with composition of 3Al2O3·2SiO2 (3:2) were synthesized and then were sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) to form transparent mullite ceramics. The precursor powders were calcined at 1100 °C for 2 h. The sintering was carried out by heating the sample to 1450 °C, holding for 10 min. The sintered body obtained a relative bulk density of above 97.5% and an infrared transmittance of 75–82% in wavelength of 2.5–4.3 μm without any additive. When the precursor powders were calcined at below 1100 °C, it was unfavorable for completely eliminating the residual OH, H2O and organic compound. However, when calcined temperature was too high, it was unfavorable either for full densification due to the absence of viscous flow of amorphous phase. At the same calcined temperature, the transmittance of sintered body was decreased with the increase of the sintering temperature above 1450 °C owing to the elongated grain growth.  相似文献

Stabilized Al2TiO5 (AT)-mullite (M) porous ceramics were fabricated by starch consolidation casting using corn starch as curing agent and their microstructure, mechanical properties, pore size distribution and corrosion resistance were examined. Results showed that AT-M porous ceramic with the flexural strength of 11.5 MPa, apparent porosity of about 54.7% and pore size distribution in the range of 1–15 µm could be obtained with 10 wt% corn starch addition. Corrosion resistance results showed mass losses in hot H2SO4 solution and NaOH solution for 10 h to decreased from 1.03% to 0.36% and 4.39–2% when the calcination temperature increased from 1400 °C to 1450 °C, which proved these AT-M porous ceramics to possess an excellent corrosion resistance in acidic condition when calcined at 1450 °C.  相似文献

A novel fibrous porous mullite network with a quasi-layered microstructure was produced by a simple vacuum squeeze moulding technique. The effects of organic binder content, inorganic binder and adsorbent on the microstructure and the room-temperature thermal and mechanical properties of fibrous porous mullite ceramics were systematically investigated. An anisotropy microstructure without agglomeration and layering was achieved. The fibrous porous mullite ceramics reported in this study exhibited low density (0.40 g/cm3), low thermal conductivity (~0.095 W/(m K)), and high compressive strength (~2.1 MPa in the x/y direction). This study reports an optimal processing method for the production of fibrous porous ceramics, which have the potential for use as high-temperature thermal insulation material.  相似文献

Geopolymer-mullite composite was prepared using fly ash and mullite powders with sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide as alkaline activators. Mullite was used as a replacement to fly ash in the 20–60 wt% range. Sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide (12 M) ratio was 1:1 while the liquid to solid ratio was 0.6:1. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the set of geopolymer specimens without mullite replacement (control) showed the co-existence of amorphous and crystalline phases of quartz, magnesioferrite (Fe2MgO4), Lazurite (Na8.56 (Al6Si6O24) (SO4)1.56 S0.44)) and calcium silicate hydrate. With an increasing amount of mullite replacement, calcium silicate hydrate and magnesioferrite diminished while the new phase of phillipsite (K, Na)2(Si,Al)8O16·4H2O) emerged. Microstructural analysis revealed Si-rich mullite needles possibly occurred by recrystallization of the original mullite. This suggestion was also confirmed by the change of the crystallite size as analysed using an X-ray diffraction technique. The ambient compressive strength was found to increase from 58 ± 21 MPa for the control geopolymer to 72–76 MPa, with a much smaller uncertainty, for the geopolymer-mullite composite. Modulus of rupture (MOR) was found to improve significantly from 0.7 ± 0.3 MPa to 3.7 ± 0.5 MPa in the 20% replacement and further to 7.8 ± 1.3 and 8.1 ± 1.1 MPa in the 40% and 60% replacement respectively. Improvement of fire resistance was observed in the 40–60% replacement thermal shock resistance property, however, was unchanged in these geopolymer-mullite composite.  相似文献

A bird nest-like structure was designed by using the mullite fiber as the matrix and SiO2 as the high temperature binder. This special material was successfully prepared by a TBA-based gel-casting process. The randomly arranged fiber laps bonded by SiO2 binder was the most important structure characteristic of this porous material. The effect of sintering temperature on the properties, i.e. porosity, bulk density, linear shrinkage, compressive strength, thermal conductivity and the microstructure was studied. The composite exhibited significant pseudoductility. The fracture mechanism of this composite under compression was discussed. The results indicated that the sintering temperature ranging from 1500 to 1600 °C was suitable for yielding mullite fiber matrix porous ceramics which had a low thermal conductivity (0.19–0.22 W/m K), a relatively high compressive strength (3–13 MPa) and a high resilience (66–70%) for applications in the thermal insulators and high-temperature elastic seal field.  相似文献
