This paper describes the design and performance of a novel adaptive hybrid ARQ scheme using concatenated FEC codes for error control over wireless ATM networks. The wireless links are characterized by higher, time‐varying error rates and burstier error patterns in comparison with the fiber‐based links for which ATM was designed. The purpose of the hybrid ARQ scheme is to provide a capability to dynamically support reliable ATM‐based transport over wireless channels by using a combination of our ARQ scheme (called SDLP) and the concatenated FEC scheme. The key ideas in the proposed hybrid ARQ scheme are to adapt the code rate to the channel conditions using incremental redundancy and to increase the starting code rate as much as possible with the concatenated FEC, maximizing the throughput efficiency. The numerical results show that our proposed scheme outperforms other ARQ schemes for all SNR values. This paper proposes an effective hybrid multilevel error control (HMEC) with an early-stop automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme for wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. In this scheme, the source traffic is segmented into a number of blocks, each with m cells, then encoded into k(k>m) cells. The transmission of one block may be finished as long as m out of the k cells are received correctly. The ARQ protocol is applied only when too many cells are dropped or corrupted due to uncorrectable error in the radio channel. This paper also provides a detail study of the proposed scheme. In particular, the throughput efficiency with parameters (m,k) are derived analytically for the white Gaussian and Rayleigh fading channels. Simulation results show a very close match with theoretical results. All the results show that the HMEC scheme can reduce cell-retransmission probability and improve network throughput over a wide range of channel error rates when appropriate values of parameters m and k are chosen.  相似文献

The medium access control (MAC) protocol and the underlying traffic scheduling algorithm developed within project Magic WAND (Wireless ATM Network Demonstrator) are presented. Magic WAND is investigating wireless ATM technology for customer premises networks in the framework of the Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) program funded by the European Union. The MAC protocol, known as MASCARA, is a hub-based, adaptive TDMA scheme which combines reservation- and contention-based access methods to provide multiple access efficiency and quality-of-service guarantees to wireless ATM terminal connections sharing a common radio channel. The traffic scheduling algorithm is delay-oriented to meet the requirements of the various traffic classes defined by the ATM architecture. An adaptive polling scheme for multiple access in a broadband wireless local area networks (LANs) is proposed. It is designed to accommodate asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) traffic with a large and variable range of bit rates. The radio architecture is microcellular, with switched sectored-beam antennas and a small frequency reuse factor. Features of the multiple access scheme include polling rate depending on a terminal's average bit rate, fixed-length frames divided into segments corresponding to base antenna sectors, and automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) for error control, combined with randomized sector segment ordering. The steady-state performance (cell loss, call blocking and dropping probabilities, waiting time, and buffer occupancy) are evaluated by simulation for an open indoor environment, and for handoff, ARQ, and simple power control enhancements; focusing mainly on the effects of the propagation and interference conditions  相似文献

A major task in next-generation wireless cellular networks is provisioning of quality of service (QoS) over the bandwidth limited and error-prone wireless link. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design scheme to provide QoS for voice and data traffic in wireless cellular networks with differentiated services (DiffServ) backbone. The scheme combines the transport layer protocols and link layer resource allocation to both guarantee the QoS requirements in the transport layer and achieve efficient resource utilization in the link layer. Optimal resource allocation problems for voice and data flows are formulated to guarantee pre-specified QoS with minimal required resources. For integrated voice/data traffic in a cell, a hybrid time-division/code-division medium access control (MAC) scheme is presented to achieve efficient multiplexing. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed cross-layer approach.  相似文献

A reservation scheme, named dynamic hybrid partitioning, is proposed for the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol of wireless ATM (WATM) networks operating in Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode. The goal is to improve the performance of the real-time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) voice traffic in networks with mixed voice/data traffic. In most proposed MAC protocols for WATM networks, the reservation phase treats all traffic equally, whether delay-sensitive or not. Hence, delay-sensitive VBR traffic sources have to compete for reservation each time they wake up from idle mode. This causes large and variable channel access delays, and increases the delay and delay variation (jitter) experienced by ATM cells of VBR traffic. In the proposed scheme, the reservation phase of the MAC protocol is dynamically divided into a contention-free partition for delay-sensitive idle VBR traffic, and a contention partition for other traffic. Adaptive algorithms dynamically adjust the partition sizes to minimize the channel bandwidth overhead. Simulation results show that the delay performance of delay-sensitive VBR traffic is improved while minimizing the overhead.  相似文献

This paper presents a discussion of several middleware design issues related to the support of real-time multimedia communications over wireless personal communication services (PCS) networks. Specific interests are given to error recovery and synchronization mechanisms. A hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme is employed for error control in the proposed system because it can efficiently adapt to nonstationary wireless channels and yield high throughput and reliability. In particular, delay and delay jitter control related to retransmissions in the error control module are addressed. An adaptive source rate control mechanism is used to handle the fluctuation of the effective channel data rate due to retransmissions. An adaptive synchronization scheme is developed to compensate for long-term delay variation caused by large-scale fading so that synchronization is preserved and end-to-end delay is kept low. Based on the IEEE 802.11n standard, frame aggregation is considered one of the major factors to improve system performance of wireless local area networks (WLANs) from the medium access control (MAC) perspective. In order to fulfill the requirements of high throughput performance, feasible design of automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanisms becomes important for providing reliable data transmission. In this paper, two MAC-defined ARQ schemes are proposed to consider the effect of frame aggregation for the enhancement of network throughput. An aggregated selective repeat ARQ (ASR-ARQ) algorithm is proposed, which incorporates the conventional selective repeat ARQ scheme with the consideration of frame aggregation. On the other hand, the aggregated hybrid ARQ (AH-ARQ) protocol is proposed to further enhance throughput performance by adopting the Reed-Solomon block code as the forward error correction (FEC) scheme. Novel analytical models based on the signal flow graph are established in order to realize the retransmission behaviors of both schemes. Simulations are conducted to validate and compare the proposed ARQ mechanisms with existing schemes based on service time distribution. Numerical results show that the proposed AH-ARQ protocol outperforms the other retransmission schemes owing to its effective utilization of FEC mechanism.  相似文献

Hybrid ARQ schemes can yield much better throughput and reliability than static FEC schemes for the transmission of data over time-varying wireless channels. However these schemes result in extra delay. They adapt to the varying channel conditions by retransmitting erroneous packets, this causes variable effective data rates for current PCS networks because the channel bandwidth is constant. Hybrid ARQ schemes are currently being proposed as the error control schemes for real-time video transmission. An important issue is how to ensure low delay while taking advantage of the high throughput and reliability that these schemes provide for. In this paper we propose an adaptive source rate control (ASRC) scheme which can work together with the hybrid ARQ error control schemes to achieve efficient transmission of real-time video with low delay and high reliability. The ASRC scheme adjusts the source rate based on the channel conditions, the transport buffer occupancy and the delay constraints. It achieves good video quality by dynamically changing both the number of the forced update (intracoded) macroblocks and the quantization scale used in a frame. The number of the forced update macroblocks used in a frame is first adjusted according to the allocated source rate. This reduces the fluctuation of the quantization scale with the change in the channel conditions during encoding so that the uniformity of the video quality is improved. The simulation results show that the proposed ASRC scheme performs very well for both slow fading and fast fading channels. Various retransmission schemes for wireless communication systems have been used to improve performance such as reliability and throughput. Each retransmission scheme is designed to improve the performance according to characteristics of each layer of protocol stacks, such as delay components and error control. Especially, a cross-layered retransmission scheme has been proposed to maximize the spectral efficiency by combining a retransmission scheme and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). However, the cross-layered retransmission scheme is designed for performance improvement at the wireless access networks. The end-to-end performance is not taken into account for modeling of the cross-layered retransmission schemes. It is difficult to design retransmission schemes for the end-to-end performance improvement. In this paper, we analyze the delay and the throughput at the transport layer for the end-to-end performance when a system uses a cross-layered retransmission scheme and the transmission control protocol as the reliable transmission protocols. We also propose a cross-layered retransmission strategy, AMC combined with automatic repeat request (ARQ) and hybrid ARQ (HARQ), to improve end-to-end throughput. From the evaluation results, it is shown that the proposed cross-layered retransmission strategy is suitable for delay insensitive services that require high throughput.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel MAC protocol for wireless ATM networks, which is characterized by a contention-free mechanism of the reservation request and a deterministic nature of mobile-assisted (distributed) uplink scheduling under a framework of the dynamic reservation TDMA, as discussed in the current standardization activities of ETSI Project BRAN (broadband radio access network) and the wireless ATM working group in the ATM Forum. The design objective of the proposed MAC protocol is to guarantee the real-time constraint of the real-time VBR (rt-VBR) traffic class while maximizing the multiplexing gain among all ATM traffic classes, especially with a fixed length frame. The proposed deterministic scheduling scheme for the rt-VBR traffic class lends itself to implementing the minimal configuration of control data units for reservation request as desired under the limited wireless resources. Simulation experiments using statistically multiplexed MPEG-2 video streams are performed for a 25 Mbits/s wireless ATM access link scenario. It has been shown that the proposed framework guarantees the delay constraint of rt-VBR sessions along with its cell loss rate significantly reduced, while improving the average delay performance of the nrt-VBR in the range of 10%-30% without compromising the channel utilization as compared to the DSA++ system  相似文献

We study the equalization problem in time division multiple access wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) systems. Aiming at minimizing the overhead associated with equalization, we propose a protocol-aided channel equalization (PACE) approach for wireless ATM. Specifically, the medium access control (MAC) and data link control (DLC) protocols are exploited to provide known ATM cell headers to the receiver at the base station. A blind channel estimation-decision feedback equalizer (BCE-DFE) algorithm is developed for uplink data transmissions. There are two advantages of the BCE-DFE algorithm: the elimination of training symbols for uplink data bursts and the removal of channel estimation error propagation suffered by conventional block equalization schemes. Simulation results show the BCE-DFE has a robust performance for wireless ATM uplink data transmissions over fast time-varying channels  相似文献

ARQ(Auto Repeat reQuest)机制通常用来在传输失败后重传数据,但是在深衰落信道下,源节点多次重传有可能导致系统性能持续变坏,作为未来无线通信的重要技术,协同通信能够大大提高链路的可靠性,可以有效解决上述问题。本文针对Ad Hoc网络,提出了一种基于优先控制的自适应协同MAC(Media Access Control)协议。此协议采用ARQ机制,根据瞬时信道情况,自适应地选择信道质量更好的中继节点来重传数据,并且在优化的退避算法和中继选择算法的控制下,赋予中继节点相对源节点更高的优先级,协议中还在传统RTS/CTS分组交互基础上加入了新的握手交互机制,使得协议的性能进一步提升。本文还对经典二维Markov模型进行了改进,加入了协同机制并提出中继节点冲突模型,对所提协议进行了建模并推导出了吞吐量性能表达式。仿真结果表明,本文所提协议相对IEEE 80211 DCF协议和传统采用ARQ机制的协同MAC协议有着更好的性能。

This paper presents a QoS oriented Data Link Control (DLC) framework for transporting Constant Bit Rate (CBR) traffic over wireless ATM links. Data link control is usually omitted in fixed ATM networks because cell corruption due to channel error is extremely rare for reliable media like copper wire and optical fiber. However, for wireless, higher bit error rates are quite common due to shadowing and other fading effects. The purpose of DLC in wireless is to provide error-free transport to the higher layers by recovering corrupted cells at the link layer. A selective reject (SREJ) automatic repeat request (ARQ) based DLC protocol is used for CBR error recovery. For an ARQ based scheme, higher recovery rates can be achieved with larger cell transfer delay, caused by cell retransmissions. Since cell transfer delay and DLC recovery rate both translate to user-perceivable Quality-of-Service (QoS), it is important for the DLC to strike a balance between these two, depending on the application's requirements. To achieve this in our protocol, the retransmission procedure for a CBR cell is constrained to complete within a recovery time interval which is specified by the application at call-setup time. Also, a novel jitter removal scheme that reduces the cell delay variation caused by cell loss and retransmissions, is incorporated as a part of the DLC protocol. The proposed protocol is implemented on NEC's WATMnet prototype system. The implementation and its experimental results are reported for illustrating the performance and feasibility of the presented CBR DLC protocol. The experimental results show that the DLC protocol can be successfully applied for QoS-constrained error recovery of CBR traffic on a per-connection basis. These also indicate that the DLC can be programmed to attain a desirable tradeoff between cell transfer delay and cell recovery rate.  相似文献

An Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) scheme is proposed for a wireless ATM LAN based on the MEDIAN concept. Simulations have been performed to demonstrate the consequences of ARQ inclusion in terms of required buffer capacity and resulting cell end-to-end delay. In particular, the behaviour of the ARQ-enhanced system for real-time traffic under non error-free conditions has been examined. The main result of the simulations is that, due to specific properties of the MEDIAN wireless ATM LAN, the proposed ARQ scheme is suitable for real-time ATM services, while yielding virtually error-free links. Next to low cell delay, it features low overhead and low processing complexity whereas it can be readily combined with a simple and efficient MAC scheme.  相似文献

This paper proposes a hybrid ARQ error control scheme based on the concatenation of a Reed-Solomon (RS) code and a rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) code for low-bit-rate video transmission over wireless channels. The concatenated hybrid ARQ scheme we propose combines the advantages of both type-I and type-II hybrid ARQ schemes. Certain error correction capability is provided in each (re)transmitted packet, and the information can be recovered from each transmission or retransmission alone if the errors are within the error correction capability (similar to type-I hybrid ARQ). The retransmitted packet contains redundancy bits which, when combined with the previous transmission, result in a more powerful RS/convolutional concatenated code to recover information if error correction fails for the individual transmissions (similar to type-II hybrid ARQ). Bit-error rate (BER) or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a radio channel changes over time due to mobile movement and fading. The channel quality at any instant depends on the previous channel conditions. For the accurate analysis of the performance of the hybrid ARQ scheme, we use a multistate Markov chain (MSMC) to model the radio channel at the data packet level. We propose a method to partition the range of the received SNR into a set of states for constructing the model so that the difference between the error rate of the real radio channel and that of the MSMC model is minimized. Based on the model, we analyze the performance of the concatenated hybrid ARQ scheme. The results give valuable insight into the effects of the error protection capability in each packet, the mobile speed, and the number of retransmissions. Finally, the transmission of H.263 coded video over a wireless channel with error protection provided by the concatenated hybrid ARQ scheme is studied by means of simulations  相似文献

The media access control (MAC)-layer performance of the cellular digital packet data (CDPD) forward channel is studied and a new technique to improve the performance is proposed. The study is based on a computer simulation model wherein a CDPD base station continuously transmits a sequence of packets to a CDPD mobile station. We consider a Rayleigh fading channel and demonstrate how the performance metrics are affected by the channel characteristics. At the reception stage, we consider both coherent and differential reception. We argue that the throughput at the MAC layer is affected not only by the error performance of the physical layer, but also by several design characteristics of the MAC layer, including the block length and the alignment between blocks and packets. We illustrate the block error rate, packet error rate, and throughput performance by simulation results, and we show how the receiver may discard data, which is correctly received but nevertheless useless. Our main conclusion is that the CDPD forward-channel performance could be significantly improved should the identified deficiencies are eliminated. For this purpose, we propose a new automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol that operates in the MAC layer to correct the erroneous blocks by means of retransmissions, and we study its performance. In addition, we discuss an adaptive scheme that maximizes the forward-channel performance by automatically enabling and disabling the ARQ protocol according to the channel conditions.  相似文献
