This paper discusses the distributions of several cluster statistics and illustrates their utility in the analysis of disease incidence or prevalence data arising in organized or structured environments. Such environments involve primary inhabitant locations in office buildings, manufacturing plants, apartment complexes and communities of homes, for example. The methods, which include some generalizations of some existing methods as well as some new ones, will be used to test for household clustering of Trypanosoma cruzi seropositivity data.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the design elements that influence the ability of persons with severe mental illness (SMI) and cognitive deficits to use a website, and to use this knowledge to design a web-based telehealth application to deliver a psychoeducation program to persons with schizophrenia and their families. Usability testing was conducted with 98 persons with SMI. First, individual website design elements were tested. Based on these results, theoretical website design models were used to create several alternative websites. These designs were tested for their ability to facilitate use by persons with SMI. The final website design is presented. The results indicate that commonly prescribed design models and guidelines produce websites that are poorly suited and confusing to persons with SMI. Our findings suggest an alternative model that should be considered when designing websites and other telehealth interventions for this population. Implications for future studies addressing the characteristics of accessible designs for persons with SMI and cognitive deficits are discussed. Distinct means have been developed to answer an increasing demand and need for methods that can accurately predict and detect the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle and fit various indications and changing situations of women's reproductive life. Methods based on the detection of direct fertility markers, such as hormonal tests and ultrasound, are more objective and accurate than traditional markers based on indirect markers, but cost and dependence on supplies limit their application. Nevertheless, these methods could be used during a few cycles either as support in the teaching phase or in difficult cases and for specific indications. Likewise, some new devices designed to facilitate recording and calculation of fertility signals could be combined with clinical methods to improve prediction and detection of the fertile phase. Besides the search for new fertility markers and the development of new methods, the possibility of combining already existing methods would certainly improve use-effectiveness and acceptance.  相似文献

Fused salt electrolysis as applied to the production of reactive refractory metals is a useful process for rare earth metals preparation also. The relatively low melting point of some of the rare earth metals and many of their alloys is an advantage here. With great ingenuity, electrolytic cells have been designed and methods developed for the preparation of high melting rare earth metals also in consolidated forms, using oxide–fluoride electrolytes. Any process of rare earth metal preparation had to contend with the great reactivity of these metals not only with the atmospheric gases but also with a great variety of crucible materials as well. The development of electrolytic processes involving both the chloride medium as well as the oxide–fluoride compositions had to be guided by this factor. The search for solutions to circumvent the numerous challenges inherent in the electrolytic extraction of rare earth metals led to some interesting process development. One of them is the preparation of rare earth metals by a method involving a consumable cathode. In this an alloy is prepared first by electrolysis and the metal is then recovered by a simple non electrolytic route from the alloy. Using one or other of these three possibilities, all the rare earth metals, and many of their alloys, could be prepared by electrolytic methods. An alarming worldwide extinction of animal species is taking place as a result of the activities of the increasing global human population. The original ranges of many animal species are being reduced and fragmented and, in some cases, they have been reduced to perilously small relict populations. The adverse genetic consequences of these restrictions are becoming clear, as are possible methods for their alleviation. The concept of ex situ genetic management of small captive populations of endangered species with a view to re-introducing them into the wild is attracting increasing interest. Modern reproductive techniques will play an important role in such programmes, and it is likely that an increasing number of veterinarians will become involved. However, the literature describing the aims and methods of reproductive genetic management is scattered and often not readily available to interested veterinary surgeons. The aim of this review is to deal with this problem by describing some potential approaches to the captive breeding of endangered species.  相似文献

The increasing use of polymer materials in medicine as much as the undesirable effects observed in patients during their application made us to study not only their functional properties but also their toxicological and biostability parameters, before their clinical application. Some of the aspects of this wide-ranging problem have been studied in our laboratory. Our aim was to try and identify the effect synthetic polymers and their extract have on different biological systems. The comparison of the results obtained through some of the biological methods was aimed at finding out to what extent such methods were suitable for testing of the polymer toxicity on living tissue.  相似文献

This review chronicles prior approaches to research on small groups, critiques contemporary theories and methods, and notes some future possibilities. Early group researchers worked in isolated "schools," treating groups as social systems for influencing members, for patterning interaction, or for performing tasks. Assumptions of those 3 schools are blended in some contemporary approaches, treating groups as systems for processing information; for managing consensus and conflict; and for motivating, regulating, and coordinating member behavior. Past and contemporary approaches are limited by their analytic focus, limited temporal scope, and failure to treat groups in context. The article points to an alternative theoretical approach that treats groups as complex, adaptive, dynamic systems and notes some methodological issues and possibilities raised by that approach.
