Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) based on blends of poly(ether sulfone) (PES) and sulfonated poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (sPVdF‐co‐HFP) were prepared successfully. Fabricated blend membranes showed favorable PEM characteristics such as reduced methanol permeability, high selectivity, and improved mechanical integrity. Additionally, these membranes afford comparable proton conductivity, good oxidative stability, moderate ion exchange capacity, and reasonable water uptake. To appraise PEM performance, blend membranes were characterized using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, AC impedance spectroscopy; atomic force microscopy, and thermogravimetry. Addition of hydrophobic PES confines the swelling of the PEM and increases the ultimate tensile strength of the membrane. Proton conductivities of the blend membranes are about 10?3 S cm?1. Methanol permeability of 1.22 × 10?7cm2 s?1 exhibited by the sPVdF‐co‐HFP/PES10 blend membrane is much lower than that of Nafion‐117. AFM studies divulged that the sPVdF‐co‐HFP/PES blend membranes have nodule like structure, which confirms the presence of hydrophilic domain. The observed results demonstrated that the sPVdF‐co‐HFP/PES blend membranes have promise for possible usage as a PEM in direct methanol fuel cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Two anions (dodecylbenzenesulfonate anion and stearate anion) are employed to synthesize intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDH) by co‐precipitation method. Then the intercalated LDHs are incorporated in the casting solutions of chloromethylated polysulfone (CMPSF) for fabricating quaternized polysulfone/LDH nanocomposite membranes. Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mastersizer laser particle size analysis are used to characterize the structure and morphology of LDHs and membranes. The properties of the composite membranes including water uptake, mechanical property, thermal stability, and ionic conductivity are investigated. Compared with other anion exchange membranes, both nanocomposite membranes containing 5% LDH sheets displayed better balanced performance. They exhibit the ionic conductivity of 3.58 × 10?2 S cm?1 and 3.86 × 10?2 S cm?1 at 60°C, respectively. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2017. © 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Electrospun poly[(vinylidene fluoride)‐co ‐hexafluoropropylene]/silica (PVdF‐HFP/SiO2) nanocomposite polymer membranes (esCPMs) were prepared by incorporating different weight percentages of SiO2 nanoparticles onto electrospun PVdF‐HFP by electrospinning technique. The surface morphology of electrospun PVdF‐HFP nanocomposite membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effect of SiO2 nanoparticles incorporation onto electrospun PVdF‐HFP polymer membranes (esPMs) has been studied by XRD, DSC, TGA, and tensile analysis. The electrospun PVdF‐HFP/SiO2 based nanocomposite membrane electrolytes (esCPMEs) were prepared by soaking the corresponding esCPMs into 1 M LiPF6 in EC:DMC (1:1 vol/vol %). The ionic conductivity of the esCPMEs was studied by AC‐impedance studies and it was found that the incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles into PVdF‐HFP membrane has improved the ionic conductivity from 1.320 × 10?3 S cm?1 to 2.259 × 10?3 S cm?1. The electrochemical stability of the esCPME was studied by linear sweep voltammetry studies and it was found to be 2.87 V. Finally, a prototype LiCo0.2Mn1.8O4//C Li‐ion capacitor (LIC) cell was fabricated with esCPME, which delivered a discharge capacitance of 128 F g?1 at the current density of 1 A g?1 and retained 86% of its discharge capacitance even after 10,000 cycles. These results demonstrated that the esCPMEs could be used as promising polymer membrane electrolyte for LICs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 45177.  相似文献

Alkaline anion exchange membrane with semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (s‐IPN) was constituted based upon quaternized poly(butyl acrylate‐co‐vinylbenzyl chloride) (QPBV) and poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF‐HFP)]. The QPBV was synthesized via the free radical copolymerization, followed by quaternization with N‐methylimidazole. The s‐IPN system was constituted by melting blend of QPBV and P(VDF‐HFP), and then crosslinking of P(VDF‐HFP). Ion exchange capacity, water uptake, mechanical performance, and thermal stability of these membranes were characterized. TEM showed that alkaline anion exchange membrane exhibited s‐IPN morphology with microphase separation. The fabricated s‐IPN membrane exhibited hydroxide ion conductivity up to 15 mS cm?1 at 25 °C and a maximum DMFC power density of 46.55 mW cm?2 at a load current density of 98 mA cm?2 at 30 °C. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phosphonic acid functionalized siloxane crosslinked with 3‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) grafted polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes are prepared by sol–gel process. The structure of the membranes is characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy. SEM images of the membranes show that the membranes are homogeneous and compact. The crosslinked membranes exhibit excellent thermal stability, chemical stability and mechanical property. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked membranes increases by an order of magnitude over range of 20 °C to 160 °C under anhydrous condition, which can reach 3.15 × 10?2 S cm?1 at 160 °C under anhydrous condition. The activation energy of proton conductivity for membranes decreases with increase of PBI, because the formation of hydrogen bond network between the phosphonic acid and the imidazole ring can enhance the continuity of hydrogen bond in the membrane. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A crosslinked epoxy [4,4′‐diglycidyl‐(3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethylbiphenyl) epoxy resin (TMBP)], cured by phenol novolac (PN), was introduced into a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane (ion‐exchange capacity = 2.0 mequiv/g) with a casting‐solution, evaporation, and heating crosslinking method to improve the mechanical properties, dimensional stability, water retention, and methanol resistance. By Fourier transform infrared analysis, the interactions between the sulfonic acid groups and hydroxyl groups in the blend membranes were confirmed. The microstructure and morphology of the blend membranes were investigated with atomic force microscopy. As expected, the blend membranes showed excellent mechanical properties, good thermal properties (thermal stability above 200°C), lower swelling ratios (1.4% at 25°C and 7.0% at 80°C), higher water retention (water diffusion coefficient = 9.8 × 10?6 cm2/s), and a lower methanol permeability coefficient (3.6 × 10?8 cm2/s) than the pristine SPEEK membrane. Although the proton conductivity of the blend membranes decreased, a higher selectivity (ratio of the proton conductivity to the methanol permeability) was obtained than that of the pristine SPEEK membrane. The results showed that the SPEEK/TMBP/PN blend membranes could have potential use as proton‐exchange membranes in direct methanol fuel cells. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of phthalonitrile end-capped sulfonated polyarylene ether nitriles are synthesized via K2CO3 mediated nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction at various molar ratios. The as-prepared polymer structures are confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The properties of membranes cast from the corresponding polymers are investigated with respect to their structures. The membranes exhibit good thermal and mechanical properties, low methanol permeability (0.01?×?10?6–0.58?×?10?6 cm2·s?1 at 20 °C), and high proton conductivity (0.021–0.088 S·cm?1 at 20 °C). The introduction of phthalonitrile is proved to increase intermolecular interaction, mainly contributing to the reduction in water uptake, swelling ratio, and methanol permeability. More importantly, its introduction does not decrease the proton conductivity, but there is a slight increase. Furthermore, the selectivity of SPEN-CN-50 can reach 4.11?×?105 S·s·cm?3, which is about nine times higher than that of Nafion 117. All the data show that the as-prepared membranes may be potential proton exchange membrane for DMFCs applications.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used to prepare nanocomposites of multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and functionalized carbon nanotubes (MWCNT‐NH2) in existence of 2‐carboxyethyl acrylate oligomers (CEA). Radiation‐induced crosslinking of the prepared matrix was carried out via gamma and ion beam irradiation. A comparative study of gamma and ion beam irradiation effect on the electrical conductivity of nanocomposite was conducted. The gelation of the gamma irradiated matrix outperforms the ion beam irradiated matrix. The order of gelation is PVA > (PVA/CEA) > (PVA/CEA)‐MWCNT > (PVA/CEA)‐MWCNT‐NH2. There is a significant reduction in the swelling of the nanocomposite. The formation of nanocomposites was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray (EDX) and FTIR examinations. The direct current electrical properties of PVA/nanocomposites are examined at room temperature by applying electric voltage from 1 to 20 V. The results revealed that the electrical conductivity is increased by adding the carbon nanotubes and irradiation by gamma and ion beam. At an applied electric voltage 20 V, in the electrical conductivity of the unirradiated PVA was from 9.20 × 10?8 S cm?1. After adding MWCNT an increase up to 4.70 × 10?5 S cm?1 was observed. While after ion beam irradiation, a further increase up to 9.30 × 10?5 S cm?1 was noticed. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46146.  相似文献

A new membrane was synthesized containing pure alginate, crosslinking agent (CaCl2), and plasticizer (glycerol). Characterization studies of the membrane were applied to determine the characteristics and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscope, EDX, FTIR, XRD, and atomic force microscopy analysis. The half‐cell performance test of the membrane was verified by several tests, including proton conductivity and methanol permeability. The best membrane had high proton conductivity (10.1 × 10?3 S cm?1) and very low methanol permeability (1.984 × 10?7 cm2 s?1), which consequently resulted in very high selectivity (5.0907 × 104 Ss cm?3). Glycerol had a positive modification and good influence on the alginate characteristics. Furthermore, the poor mechanical properties of the alginate biopolymer were enhanced by calcium chloride and glycerol inside the polymer. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Simultaneously improving the proton conductivity and mechanical properties of a polymer electrolyte membrane is a considerable challenge in commercializing proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In response, we prepared a new series of miscible polymer blends and thus the corresponding crosslinked membranes based on highly sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and sulfonated polybenzimidazole. The blended membranes showed more compact structures, due to the acid‐base interactions between the two constituents, and improved mechanical and morphological properties. Further efforts by doping sulfonated graphene oxide (s‐GO) forming composite membranes led to not only significantly elevated proton conductivity and electrochemical performance, but also better mechanical properties. Notably, the composite membrane with the filler content of 15 wt % exhibited a proton conductivity of 0.217 S cm?1 at 80 °C, and its maximum power density tested by the H2/air single PEMFC cell at room temperature reached 171 mW cm?2, almost two and half folds compared with that of the native membrane. As a result, these polymeric membranes provided new options as proton exchange membranes for fuel‐cell applications. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46547.  相似文献

A series of novel composite methanol‐blocking polymer electrolyte membranes based on sulfonated polyimide (SPI) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) doping with sulfonated mesoporous silica (S‐mSiO2) were prepared by the casting procedure. The microstructure and properties of the resulting hybrid membranes were extensively characterized. The crosslinking networks of amino silica phase together with sulfonated mesoporous silica improved the thermal stability of the hybrid membranes to a certain extent in the second decomposition temperature (250–400°C). The composite membranes doping with sulfonated mesoporous silica (SPI/APTES/S‐mSiO2) displayed superior comprehensive performance to the SPI and SPI/APTES membranes, in which the homogeneously embedded S‐mSiO2 provided new pathways for proton conduction, rendered more tortuous pathways as well as greater resistance for methanol crossover. The hybrid membrane with 3 wt % S‐mSiO2 into SPI/APTES‐4 (SPI/A‐4) exhibited the methanol permeability of 4.68 × 10?6 cm2 s?1at 25°C and proton conductivity of 0.184 S cm?1 at 80°C and 100%RH, while SPI/A‐4 membrane had the methanol permeability of 5.16 × 10?6 cm2 s?1 at 25°C and proton conductivity of 0.172 S cm?1 at 80°C and 100%RH and Nafion 117 exhibited the values of 8.80 × 10?6 cm2 s?1 and 0.176 S cm?1 in the same test conditions, respectively. The hybrid membranes were stable up to about 80°C and demonstrated a higher ratio of proton conductivity to methanol permeability than that of Nafion117. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer electrolyte blend membranes composed of sulfonated block‐graft polyimide (S‐bg‐PI) and sulfonated polybenzimidazole (sPBI) were prepared and characterized. The proton conductivity and oxygen permeability coefficient of the novel blend membrane S‐bg‐PI/sPBI (7 wt%) were 0.38 S cm?1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity and 7.2 × 10?13 cm3(STP) cm (cm2 s cmHg)?1 at 35 °C and 76 cmHg, respectively, while those of Nafion® were 0.15 S cm?1 and 1.1 × 10?10 cm3(STP) cm (cm2 s cmHg)?1 under the same conditions. The apparent (proton/oxygen transport) selectivity calculated from the proton conductivity and the oxygen permeability coefficient in the S‐bg‐PI/sPBI (7 wt%) membrane was 300 times larger than that determined in the Nafion membrane. Besides, the excellent gas barrier properties based on an acid ? base interaction in the blend membranes are expected to suppress the generation of hydrogen peroxide and reactive oxygen species, which will degrade fuel cells during operation. The excellent proton conductivity and gas barrier properties of the novel membranes promise their application for future fuel cell membranes. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

To produce a composite membrane with high conductivity and low permeability, SPPESK with a degree of sulfonation of 101% was carefully selected for the preparation of montmorillonite (MMT)‐reinforced SPPESK using solution intercalation. The fundamental characteristics such as water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and mechanical properties of the composite membranes were studied. Water uptake is improved when organic MMT (OMMT) loading increase. The composite membranes with CTAB‐MMT loading of 4–0.5% show 0.143–0.150 S cm?1 proton conductivity at 80°C, which approaches the value of Nafion112. In addition, methanol permeability was decreased to 6.29 × 10?8 cm2 s?1 by the addition of 6 wt % OMMT. As a result, the SPPESK‐MMT composite membrane is a good candidate for use in direct methanol fuel cells. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 39852.  相似文献

This study aims to develop novel hybrid composite membranes (NHMs) by impregnating Nafion solution into the porous sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (SPEEK/POSS) nanofibers (NFs). The composite membrane was prepared by solution blowing of a mixture of SPEEK/POSS solution. The characteristics of the SPEEK/POSS NFs and the NHMs, including morphology, thermal stability, and performance of membrane as PEMs, were investigated. The performance of NHMs was compared with that of Nafion117 and SPEEK/Nafion composite membranes. Results showed that the introduction of POSS improved the proton conductivity, water swelling, and methanol permeability of membranes. A maximum proton conductivity of 0.163 S cm?1 was obtained when the POSS content was 6 wt % at 80°C, which was higher than that of Nafion117 and SPEEK/Nafion. NHMs could be used as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for fuel cell applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42843.  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PVdF/SPPESK) blend membranes are successfully prepared by solution blending method for novel proton exchange membrane (PEM). PVdF crystallinity, FTIR‐ATR spectroscopy, thermal stability, morphology, water uptake, dimension stability, and proton conductivity are investigated on PVdF/SPPESK blends with different PVdF contents. XRD and DSC analysis reveal that the PVdF crystallinity in the blends depends on PVdF content. The FTIR‐ATR spectra indicate that SPPESK remains proton‐conducting function in the blends due to the intactness of ? SO3H group. Thermal analysis results show a very high thermal stability (Td1 = 246–261°C) of the blends. PVdF crystallinity and morphology study demonstrate that with lower PVdF content, PVdF are very compatible with SPPESK. Also, with lower PVdF content, PVdF/SPPESK blends possess high water uptake, e.g., P/S 10/90 and P/S 15/85 have water uptake of 135 and 99% at 95°C, respectively. The blend membranes also have good dimension stability because the swelling ratios are at a fairly low level (e.g., 8–22%, 80°C). PVdF/SPPESK blends with low PVdF content exhibit very high proton conductivity, e.g., at 80°C, P/S 15/85 and P/S 10/90 reach 2.6 × 10?2 and 3.6 × 10?2 S cm?1, respectively, which are close to or even higher than that (3.4 × 10?2 S cm?1) of Nafion115 under the same test condition. All above properties indicate that the PVdF/SPPESK blend membranes (particularly, with 10–20% of PVdF content) are very promising for use in PEM field. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone)s (SPAEK) copolymers were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic polycondensation from 3,3′, 5,5′‐tetramethyl‐4, 4′–biphenol, 1,4‐bis(4‐fluorobenzoyl) benzene, and disulfonated difluorobenzophenone. The SPAEK membranes did not exhibit excessive swelling in hot water and at the same time show the proton conductivities in the range of 0.030 S/cm to 0.099 S/cm at 80°C. The methanol diffusion coefficients of the SPAEK membranes were in the range of 4.7 × 10?7 to 8.1 × 10?7cm2/s measured at 25°C. The transport properties of this series of SPAEK copolymers were compared to poly(aryl ether ether ketone)s (SPEEK), poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone)s (SPEEKK), and Nafion® membranes. It was found that the transport properties (including proton conductivity and methanol permeability) follows the trend of SPEEKK‐60 < SPAEK‐60 < SPEEK‐60 < Nafion® 117, the order of which is also attributed to the differences in the chemical structure of the polymers and the membrane morphology. In general, this novel series of SPAEK membranes possess various advantages, such as low cost of the initial monomers, high thermal and mechanical stability, and low methanol permeability while simultaneously possessing sufficient proton conductivity, which makes them notably promising as proton exchange membrane (PEM) materials in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural polymers are widely used as matrices for solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) in electrochemical devices due to their richness in nature, low cost, and biodegradation properties. Xanthan gum (XG) is a natural polymer obtained from microbial origin and when dissolved form transparent solution with high viscosity and stability even in different temperature conditions. This article describes the synthesis of XG‐based SPEs with proton conduction. These new materials were obtained by crosslinking XG with glutaraldehyde, plasticized with ethylene glycol, and doped with acetic acid as ions source. The ionic conducting membranes, casted from this polymer solution, showed a high ionic conductivity of 7.93 × 10?5 S cm?1 at room temperature, a microscopically homogeneous surface, thermal stability, and predominantly amorphous structure. These results prove that XG‐based SPEs are very promising new materials that could be applied in modern electrochemical devices. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Novel bisphenol A‐based sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (bi A‐SPAES) copolymers were successfully synthesized via direct copolymerization of disodium 3,3′‐disulfonate‐4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone, 4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone, and bisphenol A. The copolymer structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra and 1H NMR analysis. The series of sulfonated copolymers based membranes were prepared and evaluated for proton exchange membranes (PEM). The membranes showed good thermal stability and mechanical property. Transmission electron microscopy was used to obtain the microstructures of the synthesized polymers. The membranes exhibit increased water uptake from 8% to 66%, ion exchange capacities from 0.41 to 2.18 meq/g and proton conductivities (25°C) from 0.012 to 0.102 S/cm with the degree of sulfonation increasing. The proton conductivities of bi A‐SPAES‐6 membrane (0.10–0.15 S/cm) with high‐sulfonated degree are higher than that of Nafion 117 membrane (0.095–0.117 S/cm) at all temperatures (20–100°C). Especially, the methanol diffusion coefficients of membranes (1.7 × 10?8 cm2/s–8.5 × 10?7 cm2/s) are much lower than that of Nafion 117 membrane (2.1 × 10?6 cm2/s). The new synthesized copolymer was therefore proposed as a candidate of material for PEM in direct methanol fuel cell. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

In this study, crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications are prepared using electron beam irradiation with a mixture of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) at a dose of 300 kGy. The gel‐fraction of the irradiated SPEEK/PVDF/TAIC (95/4.5/0.5) membrane is 87% while the unirradiated membrane completely dissolves in DMAc solvent. In addition, the water uptake of the irradiated membrane is 221% at 70 °C while that of the unirradiated membrane completely dissolves in water at above 70 °C. The ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity of the crosslinked membrane are 1.57 meq g−1, and 4.0 × 10−2 S cm−1 (at 80 °C and RH 90%), respectively. Furthermore, a morphology study of the membranes is conducted using differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffractometry. The cell performance study with the crosslinked membrane demonstrates that the maximum power density is 518 mW cm−2 at 1036 mA cm−2 and the maximum current density at applied voltage of 0.4 V is 1190 mA cm−2.  相似文献

Side‐chain‐type sulfonated/quaternized aromatic polyelectrolytes with precisely controlled contents of ionized groups are successfully synthesized via direct polyacylation of sulfonated/quaternized monomers based on 2,2′‐dihydroxy‐1,1′‐binaphthyl (DHBN). Both proton exchange membranes (PEMs) and anion exchange membranes (AEMs) of the corresponding polyelectrolytes exhibit outstanding properties. Proton conductivity (116 mS cm?1 at 30 °C) higher than Nafion 115 for the PEMs and OH conductivity (28.5–53.7 mS cm?1 at 30 °C) comparable to Tokuyama A901 for the AEMs are accomplished. In addition, the AEMs can withstand 60 days’ aging in 1 mol L?1 NaOH at 60 °C without degradation, as proved by 1H NMR. More intriguingly, when starting from optically active (S)‐DHBN instead of racemic DHBN, an enhancement in proton conductivity of PEMs is observed for the first time, which opens a new door to optically active ion exchange membranes.  相似文献
