A broad range tuning of over 100 nm in tunable DBR lasers with superstructure grating (SSG) is reported. The SSG reflectors for 100 nm were designed and patterned by electron beam lithography. 1.55 mu m DBR lasers with SSG reflector operate in a single mode with a tuning range of 83 nm under CW conditions. With inclusion of the multimode operating region, the tuning range becomes as wide as 103 nm.<> 相似文献

A vertical-grating-assisted codirectional coupler laser with rear sampled grating reflector (GCSR laser) combines single-mode operation over a very wide tuning range of 74 nm with a side-mode suppression of better than 30 dB over most of the wavelength span. We report improved tuning regularity in a vertical grating assisted codirectional coupler laser with a super-structure grating distributed Bragg reflector (GCSR). Access to 20 wavelengths with SMSR better than 20 dB within a tuning range of 100 nn was obtained with a single current control in a GCSR laser. The intensity and frequency noise of a grating assisted codirectional coupler with rear sampled grating reflector laser with 40-nm tuning range and 35-dB sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) have been measured. The linewidth varies from 430 kHz to 4 MHz as a function of tuning. The resonance frequency, intrinsic bandwidth and damping factor for this device were extracted from the relative intensity noise (RIN) measurements. A new widely tunable laser diode structure that requires only two tuning currents is proposed. The laser diode consists of a sampled grating distributed feedback (SGDFB) laser diode monolithically integrated with a sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SGDBR). The phase control sections are properly inserted between the grating bursts of the SGDBR and SGDFB sections for the discrete and continuous tuning. To confirm the feasibility of the new structure, the split-step time domain model is used. The simulation result for a particular design shows that the tuning range as wide as 27 nm is possible with side-mode suppression ratio exceeding 35 dB. Furthermore, the output power is larger than that from SGDBR laser diodes with similar parameters. 相似文献

The authors demonstrate, for the first time, successful implementation of a distributed Bragg reflector laser with two sampled grating mirrors, which they previously predicted should give tuning range in excess of 50 nm. This device uses a uniform grating pitch throughout the structure, and relies on the same fabrication technology as a standard DBR laser. Initial results show 57 nm of mathematical tuning at 1.475 μm with side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR)>30 dB over much of the tuning range. The observed change in operating wavelength versus mirror currents along with below threshold spectra agree with theoretical expectations 相似文献

A new tunable laser structure using a single electroabsorption (EA) tuning super structure grating section for fast wavelength switching operation, has been realized. The tuning mechanism of this absorption change distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser is based on a localized absorption variation induced in a multielectrode EA-SSG section. These devices exhibit a 2.5-nm tuning range with three modes and a switching time, between two successive wavelength channels, shorter than 250 ps. High output powers and wide range tuning have been achieved in a sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector laser with an integrated semiconductor optical amplifier. Tilted amplifier and anti-reflection facet coating are used to suppress reflection. A theoretical analysis is performed of the frequency noise in tunable two- and three-section distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser diodes (LDs), taking into account the nonlinear gain compression effect. For a two-section DBR LD the frequency noise is shown to depend significantly on the tuning current, particularly at low frequencies (below the gigahertz range) and for low and moderate values of the grating coupling coefficient. For high values of this coefficient the tuning dependence is generally negligible when the tuning is performed only through the DBR section, but it becomes significant when using the phase control current in a three-section device. It is shown that the enhancement factor for the spontaneous emission rate due to the longitudinal field dependence increases significantly with tuning for low values of the grating coupling coefficient 相似文献

A wavelength stabilization method for widely tunable superstructure-grating (SSG) distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser is described. The output characteristics under tuning are studied theoretically and experimentally. It is found that peak reflectivity states, in which the lasing mode is just aligned with the reflection peaks of both DBR's, are obtained at saddle points in the output characteristics while changing the two SSG-DBR currents. Based on these results, a method for the Bragg frequency control of the two SSG-DBRs is proposed. The feedback control circuit keeps the lasing mode at a peak reflectivity state, and it suppresses mode hopping. Additionally, the oscillation mode is locked to arbitrary reference wavelengths of an optical filter. Stabilization at 200 GHz (1.6 nm)-spaced 16 wavelengths was achieved within the wide tuning range of the SSG-DBR laser. An integrated direct UV written apodised planar Bragg grating reflector with 154 GHz (1.23 nm) of thermo-optic tuning in the C-band and a response speed 31 GHz/ms is demonstrated. The amplitude (AM) and frequency (FM) modulation responses of a grating assisted codirectional coupler with rear sampled grating reflector laser were measured over a 40-nm tuning range. The extracted modulation bandwidth varied between 3 and 4 GHz and parameters as parasitic cutoff, maximum relaxation frequency and K-factor were extracted from curve fittings to the AM response. The frequency modulation measurements revealed low chirp despite the large tunability of the device. The linewidth enhancement factor was calculated from the AM and FM measurements.
