An experimental investigation of nucleate pool boiling heat transfer is carried out using SiO2 nanofluid in atmospheric pressure and saturated conditions. The results show that the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the nanofluids is lower than that of deionized water, especially in high heat fluxes. In addition, the experimental results indicate that the critical heat flux (CHF) improves up to 45% with the increase of the nanoparticle volume concentration. Atomic force microscopy images from the boiling surface reveal that the nanoparticles are deposited on the heating surface during the nanofluid pool boiling experiments. It is found that the boiling HTC deteriorates as a result of the reduction in active nucleation sites and the formation of extra thermal resistance due to blocked vapor in the porous structures near the heating surface. Furthermore, the improvement of the surface wettability causes an increase in CHF. Based on the experimental investigations, it can be concluded that the changes in the properties of the boiling surface are mainly responsible for the variations in nanofluids boiling performance.  相似文献

Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients of dilute stabilized Al2O3–ethyleneglycol nanofluids as possible coolant fluid are experimentally quantified. The influence of different parameters such as heat flux, heating surface nano-roughness, concentration of nanofluids and fouling resistance on the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of alumina nanofluids has experimentally been investigated and briefly discussed. Results demonstrated that there are two heat transfer regions with different mechanisms namely free convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer. Studies on the influence of parameter demonstrated that with increasing the heat flux, the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids significantly increases. In contrast, with increasing the concentration of nanofluid, due to the deposition of nanoparticles on the surface, the average roughness of the surface and the heat transfer coefficient dramatically deteriorate, while a significant increase in fouling resistance is reported. Also, studies reveal asymptotic and rectilinear behaviors of fouling resistance parameter in nucleate boiling and free convective domains.  相似文献

This paper reports on the investigation of pool boiling heat transfer of γ-Al2O3/CMC non-Newtonian nanofluids. To prepare nanofluids, γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles were dispersed in CMC solution (carboxy methyl cellulose in water) using ultrasonic mixing and mechanical mixer. Different concentrations of CMC non-Newtonian fluids and γ-Al2O3/CMC non-Newtonian nanofluids were tested under nucleate pool boiling heat transfer conditions. Experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure. Results show that the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of CMC solutions is lower than water. The decrease in boiling heat transfer is more pronounced at higher CMC concentrations and, as a result, higher solution viscosity. Adding nanoparticles to CMC non-Newtonian solutions results in an improved boiling heat transfer performance. The enhancement in the boiling heat transfer coefficient increases with the nanoparticle concentration; at a concentration of 1.4 wt.%, the boiling heat transfer coefficient increases by about 25% when compared to the base fluid.  相似文献

Using TiO2–water nanofluids as the test liquid, pool boiling experiments were carried out to investigate the dependence of the nucleate boiling heat transfer, surface wettability and critical heat flux (CHF) on the boiling time in nanofluids. In the experiments performed at sufficiently high nanoparticle concentrations, the boiling heat transfer first degraded, then improved, and finally reached an equilibrium state. It was hence supposed that the present nanofluids had competing effects to deteriorate and enhance the nucleate boiling heat transfer. As for the surface wettability and CHF, the static contact angle asymptotically decreased whilst the CHF asymptotically increased with an increase in the boiling time. The maximum CHF enhancement measured in the present experiments was 91%, and strong correlation was found between the contact angle and the CHF. Although the boiling time needed to achieve the maximum CHF enhancement was less than a minute at high particle concentrations, a longer time of the order of 1 h was necessary at the lowest particle concentration tested in this work. This experimental result indicated that sufficient attention should be paid to the boiling time effect particularly in industrial applications of nanofluids to emergency cooling.  相似文献

To investigate boiling heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids, transient quenching experiments of a high temperature silver sphere in water-based nanofluids with Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles were performed. A silver sphere with a diameter of 10 mm and an initial temperature of 700 °C was quenched in these nanofluids at a temperature of 90 °C. The results showed a considerable reduction in the quenching ability of nanofluids compared to that of pure water. The presence of nanoparticles in water caused the film boiling mode to vanish at lower temperatures depending on the mixture concentration. Calculated heat transfer rates in nanofluids were lower than those in pure water. In the quenching experiments with an unwashed heated sphere, the film boiling mode did not appear and the hot sphere quenched more rapidly through nucleate boiling. In this case the sphere surface was covered by a thin layer of nanoparticles. It was evident that nanoparticle deposition on the sphere surface prevented vapor film from forming around it and resulted in quick quenching of the hot sphere.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out on n-pentane nucleate boiling at atmospheric pressure and saturation temperature for different gap sizes. The boiling was investigated in a confined space delimited by two horizontal discs, a heated surface and an adiabatic surface, for distances varying between 0.1 mm and 13 mm. Tests were carried out on heated surfaces of 12 mm and 20 mm diameter. The effects of the gap size on the partial boiling curve and the diameter of the heated surface were studied. A dimensionless analysis was carried out and a correlation to describe the phenomenon of confined nucleate boiling is presented.  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of the thermal physics of nanofluids on the critical heat flux (CHF) of nanofluids. Thermal physics tests of nanoparticle concentrations ranged from 0 to 1 g/L. Pool boiling experiments were performed using electrically heated NiCr metal wire under atmospheric pressure. The results show that there was no obvious change for viscosity and a maximum enhancement of about 5 to 7% for thermal conductivity and surface tension with the addition of nanoparticles into pure water. Consistently with other nanofluid studies, this study found that a significant enhancement in CHF could be achieved at modest nanoparticle concentrations (<0.1 g/L by Al2O3 nanoparticle concentration). Compared to the CHF of pure water, an enhancement of 113% over that of nanofluids was found. Scanning electron microscope photos showed there was a nanoparticle layer formed on the heating surface for nanofluid boiling. The bubble growth was photographed by a camera. The coating layer makes the nucleation of vapor bubbles easily formed. Thus, the addition of nanoparticles has active effects on the CHF.  相似文献

Nanofluids are colloidal dispersions of nanoparticles in homogenous base fluids. Previous studies have shown that nanofluids can increase pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) by forming a porous deposition on the heated surface. However, questions remain whether nanoparticles can further enhance the CHF on a passively engineered heat transfer surface, such as a sandblasted metal plate. In this study, three water-based nanofluids (diamond, zinc oxide and alumina) were used to modify sandblasted stainless steel 316 plate heaters via boiling induced deposition. The pool boiling CHF of these pre-coated heaters increased by up to 35% with respect to that of the bare, sandblasted heaters. The enhancements are highest for alumina and zinc oxide nanofluids. Detailed surface characterization of these pre-coated heaters showed different surface morphology depending on the type of nanofluids used. Additionally, the deposited nanoparticles layers were found to alter the wettability of the heaters. Contact angle measurement provided quantitative data to determine possible CHF enhancement based on existing correlations.  相似文献

We measured the critical heat flux (CHF) and boiling heat transfer coefficient (BHTC) of water-based Al2O3 (alumina) nanofluids. To elucidate the stabilizer effect on CHF and BHTC of alumina/water nanofluids, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a stabilizer. The plate copper heater (10 × 10 mm2) is used as the boiling surface and the concentration of alumina nanoparticle varies 0–0.1 vol.%. The results show that the BHTC of the nanofluids becomes lower than that of the base fluid as the concentration of nanoparticles increases while CHF of it becomes higher. It is found that the increase of CHF is directly proportional to the effective boiling surface area and the reduction of BHTC is mainly attributed to the blocking of the active nucleation cavity and the increase of the conduction resistance by the nanoparticle deposition on the boiling surface.  相似文献

In this paper, the curiosity is coming from how to bring out the fluidic capability of nanofluids (fluid itself) for critical heat flux (CHF) enhancement away from surface deposition effects such as improved wettability. The pool boiling characteristics of dilute dispersions of alumina and the microencapsulated C19H40 phase change material (MPCM) in R-123 were studied. Whereas other nanofluid studies only reported that a significant enhancement of CHF was achieved by buildup of a porous layer of nanoparticles on the heater surface during nucleate boiling, it was found that the additional CHF enhancement of 24% occurred with the MPCM compared to alumina nanomaterials. With solid–liquid phase changes, PCMs in suspension delay the occurrence of CHF by absorbing heat around from the heater, nucleate bubbles and merged bubbles while PCM shells prevent leakage of molten cores and allows the return to solid with exchanges of heat at some distances. The present study found that PCMs could make fluidic effects of nanofluid not relying on the surface depositions.  相似文献

In this study, the coating process on the copper surface with titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been introduced. The coated surface exhibits extremely high affinity for water and the solid–liquid contact angle decreases nearly to zero by exposing the surface to ultra-violet light. This superhydrophilic characteristic was applied to nucleate boiling heat transfer of water jet impingement on a flat heated plate. By making use of this special heat transfer surface, the nucleate boiling heat transfer and the critical heat flux (CHF) of a bar water jet impingement on a large flat superhydrophilic surface was experimentally investigated. The experimental data were measured in a steady state. The purified water was employed as the working liquid. Three main influencing factors, i.e., subcooling, impact velocity and the surface coating condition, were changed and their effects on the nucleate boiling heat transfer and the CHF were investigated. The empirical correlations were obtained for predicting the CHF of steady boiling for a small round water jet impingement on a large flat superhydrophilic surface. The experimental results show that the CHF on the superhydrophilic surface is about 30% higher than that on conventional copper surface by decreasing the solid–liquid contact angle.  相似文献

TiO2 nanoparticle-coated nickel wires were produced by electrical heating in various nanofluid concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1 wt.% with various processing heat fluxes from 0 to 1000 kW/m2. The experimental results demonstrated up to 82.7% enhancement on critical heat flux (CHF) in condition of coated nickel wire (processed in 1 wt.% with 1000 kW/m2) boiling in pure water. The contact angle measurement revealed that the hydrophilic porous coating formed by vigorous vaporization of TiO2 nanofluid in nucleate boiling regime enormously modified the wettability of heating surface consequently improving the CHF. Besides, it is evident that the coverage of nanoparticle deposition tended to become more complete as concentration and processing heat flux increased based on SEM and EDS analysis. The nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid exhibited little effect on CHF enhancement and could even hinder the percentage of CHF augmentation from boosting, which demonstrated that one could enhance CHF by using only small amount of nanoparticles just adequate to form surface coatings instead of preparing working fluid with great bulk. However, according to the boiling curves in all cases of coated nickel wires, it is supposed that the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient deteriorates as a result of thermal resistance resulted from the occurrence of nanoparticle deposition. In summary, the coated porous structure of nanoparticles leads to enhance CHF and to decrease boiling heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

The surface tension of alcohol/water mixtures has been measured over the whole fraction range and then it has been measured when a surface‐active agent was added into the mixtures. The effect of the concentration of alcohol and the surface‐ active agent on surface tension was experimentally clarified, in order to gain base data related to enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient in the mixtures and water. The experiment was also carried out to enhance the boiling heat transfer coefficients of water and alcohol/water mixtures on a horizontal heated fine wire at a pressure of 0.1 MPa by adding a surface‐active agent into the tested liquid. The results show, the coefficients were enhanced in lower alcohol concentration (C ≦ 0.5) and low heat flux range which occur just after the onset of boiling. It was also found that the enhancement effect by the surfactant disappears in concentrations over 1000 ppm. Finally, we demonstrated that the surface tension remarkably affects the heat transfer coefficients in nucleate pool boiling. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An experimental study was carried out to understand the flow boiling heat transfer of water based CuO nanofluids in the evaporator of a thermosyphon loop under steady sub-atmospheric pressures. Experimental results show that both the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and the critical heat flux (CHF) of flow boiling in the evaporator of the thermosyphon loop could be enhanced by substituting nanofluids for water. The operating pressure has apparent impact on the HTC enhancement of nanofluids. However, the operating pressure has negligible effect on the CHF enhancement. There exists an optimal mass concentration of nanoparticles corresponding to the best enhancement effect. Experimental results show that the CHF enhancement results mainly from the existing of the coating layer on the heated surface formed by the sediment of nanoparticles. However, the HTC enhancement results from the effects of both the existing of the coating layer and the change of thermophysical properties of the working fluid.  相似文献

A water-based functionalized nanofluid was made by surface functionalizing the ordinary silica nanoparticles. The functionalized nanoparticles were water-soluble and could still keep dispersing well even at the mass concentration of 10% and no sedimentation was observed. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of functionalized nanofluid at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures. The same work was also performed for DI water and traditional nanofluid consisted of water and ordinary silica nanoparticles for the comparison. Experimental results show that there exist great differences between pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of functionalized and traditional nanofluid. The differences mainly result from the changes of surface characteristics of the heated surface during the boiling. A porous deposition layer exists on the heated surface during the boiling of traditional nanofluid; however, no layer exists for functionalized nanofluid. Functionalized nanofluid can slightly increase the heat transfer coefficient comparing with the water case, but has nearly no effects on the critical heat flux. It is mainly due to the changes of the thermoproperties of nanofluids. Traditional nanofluid can significantly enhance the critical heat flux, but conversely deteriorates the heat transfer coefficient. It is mainly due to effect of surface characteristics of the heated surface during the boiling. Therefore, the pool boiling heat transfer of nanofluids is governed by both the thermoproperties of nanofluids and the surface characteristics of the heated surface.  相似文献

The nucleate pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of TiO2 nanofluids are investigated to determine the important parameters' effects on the heat transfer coefficient and also to have reliable empirical correlations based on the neural network analysis. Nanofluids with various concentrations of 0.0001, 0.0005, 0.005, and 0.01 vol.% are employed. The horizontal circular test plate, made from copper with different roughness values of 0.2, 2.5 and 4 μm, is used as a heating surface. The artificial neural network (ANN) training sets have the experimental data of nucleate pool boiling tests, including temperature differences between the temperatures of the average heater surface and the liquid saturation from 5.8 to 25.21 K, heat fluxes from 28.14 to 948.03 kW m− 2. The pool boiling heat transfer coefficient is calculated using the measured results such as current, voltage, and temperatures from the experiments. Input of the ANNs are the 8 numbers of dimensional and dimensionless values of the test section, such as thermal conductivity, particle size, physical properties of the fluid, surface roughness, concentration rate of nanoparticles and wall superheating, while the outputs of the ANNs are the heat flux and experimental pool boiling heat transfer coefficient from the analysis. The nucleate pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of TiO2 nanofluids are modeled to decide the best approach, using several ANN methods such as multi-layer perceptron (MLP), generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and radial basis networks (RBF). Elimination process of the ANN methods is performed together with the copper and aluminum test sections by means of a 4-fold cross validation algorithm. The ANNs performances are measured by mean relative error criteria with the use of unknown test sets. The performance of the method of MLP with 10-20-1 architecture, GRNN with the spread coefficient 0.7 and RBFs with the spread coefficient of 1000 and a hidden layer neuron number of 80 are found to be in good agreement, predicting the experimental pool boiling heat transfer coefficient with deviations within the range of ± 5% for all tested conditions. Dependency of output of the ANNs from input values is investigated and new ANN based heat transfer coefficient correlations are developed, taking into account the input parameters of ANNs in the paper.  相似文献

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to investigate the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of pure water and alumina/water nanofluids on different micro- and nanostructured surfaces prepared via the thermal spray coating method. Results indicate that nanofluids boiling on all the test surfaces led to critical heat flux (CHF) values greater than that obtained for the base fluid (i.e., water). Higher roughness value, however, led to higher CHF values in boiling over the surfaces. Another finding of this study indicated that CHF values obtained with boiling on Cu-coated micro- and nanosurfaces were identical although the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) values obtained for boiling on the micro-structure surface were higher than those obtained for a nanostructured surface with almost the same roughness. A series of consecutive nanofluid boiling cycles were also performed on the aluminum-coated nanostructured surface. The CHF value obtained for water boiling on the surface undergoing repeated nanofluid boiling cycles was by 27% higher than that obtained for a clean surface although the relevant HTC values were nearly identical.  相似文献

In this paper, thermal characteristics of natural convection in a rectangular cavity heated from below with water-based nanofluids containing alumina (Al2O3 nanofluids) are theoretically investigated with Jang and Choi’s model for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of nanofluids and various models for the effective viscosity. To validate theoretical results, we compare theoretical results with experimental results presented by Putra et al. It is shown that the experimental results are put between a theoretical line derived from Jang and Choi’s model and Einstein’s model and a theoretical line from Jang and Choi’s model and Pak and Cho’s correlation. In addition, the effects of the volume fraction, the size of nanoparticles, and the average temperature of nanofluids on natural convective instability and heat transfer characteristics of water-based Al2O3 nanofluids in a rectangular cavity heated from below are theoretically presented. Based on the results, this paper shows that water-based Al2O3 nanofluids is more stable than base fluid in a rectangular cavity heated from below as the volume fraction of nanoparticles increases, the size of nanoparticles decreases, or the average temperature of nanofluids increases. Finally, we theoretically show that the ratio of heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids to that of base fluid is decreased as the size of nanoparticles increases, or the average temperature of nanofluids is decreased.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate the pool boiling of alumina‐water nanofluid at 0.1 g/l to 0.5 g/l of distilled water, and the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of pure water and nanofluid at different mass concentrations were compared at and above the atmospheric pressure. At atmospheric pressure, different concentrations of nanofluids display different degrees of deterioration in boiling heat transfer. The effect of pressure and concentration of nanoparticles revealed significant enhancement in heat flux and deterioration in pool boiling. The heat transfer coefficient of 0.5 g/l alumina‐water nanofluid was compared with pure water and clearly indicates deterioration. At all pressures the heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluid were lower than those of pure water. Experimental observation revealed particles coating over the heater surface and subsequent SEM inspection of the heater surface showed nanoparticles coating on the surface forming a porous layer. To substantiate the nanoparticle deposition and its effect on heat flux, investigation was done by measuring the surface roughness of the heater surface before and after the experiment. While SEM images of the heater surface revealed nanoparticle deposition, surface roughness of the heater surface confirmed it. Based on the experimental investigations it can be concluded that an optimum thickness of nanoparticles coating favors an increase in heat flux. Higher surface temperature due to the presence of nanoparticles coating results in the deterioration of boiling heat transfer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Comparison of boiling performance of nanofluids and mixtures of nanofluids with surfactant is an objective of this research. Experimental investigation has been performed with different heat flux and concentrations of nanoparticles and surfactant. CuO and ZnO water-based nanofluids are used and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is used as surfactant. The size of nanoparticles is measured from Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy pictures. Roughness of rod heater is calculated by using Atomic Force Microscopy picture. The pure water is tested after each run with nanofluid and mixture of nanofluid with SDS and the results are presented. Result from experiments demonstrates that the addition of SDS to nanofluids solution resulted in improving boiling performance. Experimental results also show an inefficient process by excluding surfactant. An optimum value for heat transfer coefficient is found by increasing of surfactant concentration within CuO nanofluid (0.01wt%CuO). Pictures of coated and clean surface in boiling pure water are employed for understanding the dynamics of bubbles. Gorenflo constant (h0) is utilized to show the effect of addition of nanoparticles and SDS in boiling performance of base fluid.  相似文献
