CORE: a content-based retrieval engine for multimedia information systems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Rapid advances in multimedia technology necessitate the development of a generic multimedia information system with a powerful retrieval engine for prototyping multimedia applications. We develop a content-based retrieval engine (CORE) that makes use of novel indexing techniques for multimedia object retrieval. We formalize the concepts related to multimedia information systems such as multimedia objects and content-based retrieval. We bring out the requirements and challenges of a multimedia information system. The architecture of CORE is described in detail along with the associated retrieval mechanisms and indexing techniques. Various modules developed for efficient retrieval are presented with some APIs. The efficacy of CORE is demonstrated in the development of two multimedia systems, a computer-aided facial image inference and retrieval (CAFIIR) system and a system for trademark archival and retrieval (STAR), which have been developed at the Institute of Systems Science (ISS). We expect that CORE will be useful for effective prototyping of other such multimedia applications.Mainly supported by National Science & Technology Board of SingaporePartly working in Real World Computing Partnership, Novel Function Institute of Systems Science Laboratory since April 1994.  相似文献

As the majority of content-based image retrieval systems operate on full images in pixel domain, decompression is a prerequisite for the retrieval of compressed images. To provide a possible on-line indexing and retrieval technique for those jpg image files, we propose a novel pseudo-pixel extraction algorithm to bridge the gap between the existing image indexing technology, developed in the pixel domain, and the fact that an increasing number of images stored on the Web are already compressed by JPEG at the source. Further, we describe our Web-based image retrieval system, WEBimager, by using the proposed algorithm to provide a prototype visual information system toward automatic management, indexing, and retrieval of compressed images available on the Internet. This provides users with efficient tools to search the Web for compressed images and establish a database or a collection of special images to their interests. Experiments using texture- and colour-based indexing techniques support the idea that the proposed algorithm achieves significantly better results in terms of computing cost than their full decompression or partial decompression counterparts. This technology will help control the explosion of media-rich content by offering users a powerful automated image indexing and retrieval tool for compressed images on the Web.J. Efficient and robust information retrieval from large image databases is an essential functionality for the reuse, manipulation, and editing of multimedia documents. Structural feature indexing is a potential approach to efficient shape retrieval from large image databases, but the indexing is sensitive to noise, scales of observation, and local shape deformations. It has now been confirmed that efficiency of classification and robustness against noise and local shape transformations can be improved by the feature indexing approach incorporating shape feature generation techniques (Nishida, Comput. Vision Image Understanding 73 (1) (1999) 121-136). In this paper, based on this approach, an efficient, robust method is presented for retrieval of model shapes that have parts similar to the query shape presented to the image database. The effectiveness is confirmed by experimental trials with a large database of boundary contours obtained from real images, and is validated by systematically designed experiments with a large number of synthetic data.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a method to represent achromatic and chromatic image signals independently for content-based image indexing and retrieval for image database applications. Starting from an opponent colour representation, human colour vision theories and modern digital signal processing technologies are applied to develop a compact and computationally efficient visual appearance model for coloured image patterns. We use the model to compute the statistics of achromatic and chromatic spatial patterns of colour images for indexing and content-based retrieval. Two types of colour images databases, one colour texture database and another photography colour image database are used to evaluate the performance of the developed method in content-based image indexing and retrieval. Experimental results are presented to show that the new method is superior or competitive to state-of-the-art content-based image indexing and retrieval techniques.  相似文献

Content based image retrieval is an active area of research. Many approaches have been proposed to retrieve images based on matching of some features derived from the image content. Color is an important feature of image content. The problem with many traditional matching-based retrieval methods is that the search time for retrieving similar images for a given query image increases linearly with the size of the image database. We present an efficient color indexing scheme for similarity-based retrieval which has a search time that increases logarithmically with the database size.In our approach, the color features are extracted automatically using a color clustering algorithm. Then the cluster centroids are used as representatives of the images in 3-dimensional color space and are indexed using a spatial indexing method that usesR-tree. The worst case search time complexity of this approach isOn q log(N* navg)), whereN is the number of images in the database, andn q andn avg are the number of colors in the query image and the average number of colors per image in the database respectively. We present the experimental results for the proposed approach on two databases consisting of 337 Trademark images and 200 Flag images.  相似文献

A real-time matching system for large fingerprint databases   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
With the current rapid growth in multimedia technology, there is an imminent need for efficient techniques to search and query large image databases. Because of their unique and peculiar needs, image databases cannot be treated in a similar fashion to other types of digital libraries. The contextual dependencies present in images, and the complex nature of two-dimensional image data make the representation issues more difficult for image databases. An invariant representation of an image is still an open research issue. For these reasons, it is difficult to find a universal content-based retrieval technique. Current approaches based on shape, texture, and color for indexing image databases have met with limited success. Further, these techniques have not been adequately tested in the presence of noise and distortions. A given application domain offers stronger constraints for improving the retrieval performance. Fingerprint databases are characterized by their large size as well as noisy and distorted query images. Distortions are very common in fingerprint images due to elasticity of the skin. In this paper, a method of indexing large fingerprint image databases is presented. The approach integrates a number of domain-specific high-level features such as pattern class and ridge density at higher levels of the search. At the lowest level, it incorporates elastic structural feature-based matching for indexing the database. With a multilevel indexing approach, we have been able to reduce the search space. The search engine has also been implemented on Splash 2-a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based array processor to obtain near-ASIC level speed of matching. Our approach has been tested on a locally collected test data and on NIST-9, a large fingerprint database available in the public domain  相似文献

Subspace and similarity metric learning are important issues for image and video analysis in the scenarios of both computer vision and multimedia fields. Many real-world applications, such as image clustering/labeling and video indexing/retrieval, involve feature space dimensionality reduction as well as feature matching metric learning. However, the loss of information from dimensionality reduction may degrade the accuracy of similarity matching. In practice, such basic conflicting requirements for both feature representation efficiency and similarity matching accuracy need to be appropriately addressed. In the style of “Thinking Globally and Fitting Locally”, we develop Locally Embedded Analysis (LEA) based solutions for visual data clustering and retrieval. LEA reveals the essential low-dimensional manifold structure of the data by preserving the local nearest neighbor affinity, and allowing a linear subspace embedding through solving a graph embedded eigenvalue decomposition problem. A visual data clustering algorithm, called Locally Embedded Clustering (LEC), and a local similarity metric learning algorithm for robust video retrieval, called Locally Adaptive Retrieval (LAR), are both designed upon the LEA approach, with variations in local affinity graph modeling. For large size database applications, instead of learning a global metric, we localize the metric learning space with kd-tree partition to localities identified by the indexing process. Simulation results demonstrate the effective performance of proposed solutions in both accuracy and speed aspects.  相似文献

Finding an object inside a target image by querying multimedia data is desirable, but remains a challenge. The effectiveness of region-based representation for content-based image retrieval is extensively studied in the literature. One common weakness of region-based approaches is that perform detection using low level visual features within the region and the homogeneous image regions have little correspondence to the semantic objects. Thus, the retrieval results are often far from satisfactory. In addition, the performance is significantly affected by consistency in the segmented regions of the target object from the query and database images. Instead of solving these problems independently, this paper proposes region-based object retrieval using the generalized Hough transform (GHT) and adaptive image segmentation. The proposed approach has two phases. First, a learning phase identifies and stores stable parameters for segmenting each database image. In the retrieval phase, the adaptive image segmentation process is also performed to segment a query image into regions for retrieving visual objects inside database images through the GHT with a modified voting scheme to locate the target visual object under a certain affine transformation. The learned parameters make the segmentation results of query and database images more stable and consistent. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method gives good performance in terms of retrieval accuracy, robustness, and execution speed.  相似文献

A fractal-based clustering approach in large visual database systems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Large visual database systems require effective and efficient ways of indexing and accessing visual data on the basis of content. In this process, significant features must first be extracted from image data in their pixel format. These features must then be classified and indexed to assist efficient access to image content. With the large volume of visual data stored in a visual database, image classification is a critical step to achieve efficient indexing and retrieval. In this paper, we investigate an effective approach to the clustering of image data based on the technique of fractal image coding, a method first introduced in conjunction with fractal image compression technique. A joint fractal coding technique, applicable to pairs of images, is used to determine the degree of their similarity. Images in a visual database can be categorized in clusters on the basis of their similarity to a set of iconic images. Classification metrics are proposed for the measurement of the extent of similarity among images. By experimenting on a large set of texture and natural images, we demonstrate the applicability of these metrics and the proposed clustering technique to various visual database applications.  相似文献

In this work, we are interested in technologies that will allow users to actively browse and navigate large image databases and to retrieve images through interactive fast browsing and navigation. The development of a browsing/navigation-based image retrieval system has at least two challenges. The first is that the system's graphical user interface (GUI) should intuitively reflect the distribution of the images in the database in order to provide the users with a mental picture of the database content and a sense of orientation during the course of browsing/navigation. The second is that it has to be fast and responsive, and be able to respond to users actions at an interactive speed in order to engage the users. We have developed a method that attempts to address these challenges of a browsing/navigation based image retrieval systems. The unique feature of the method is that we take an integrated approach to the design of the browsing/navigation GUI and the indexing and organization of the images in the database. The GUI is tightly coupled with the algorithms that run in the background. The visual cues of the GUI are logically linked with various parts of the repository (image clusters of various particular visual themes) thus providing intuitive correspondences between the GUI and the database contents. In the backend, the images are organized into a binary tree data structure using a sequential maximal information coding algorithm and each image is indexed by an n-bit binary index thus making response to users’ action very fast. We present experimental results to demonstrate the usefulness of our method both as a pre-filtering tool and for developing browsing/navigation systems for fast image retrieval from large image databases.  相似文献

In this paper we present a robust information integration approach to identifying images of persons in large collections such as the Web. The underlying system relies on combining content analysis, which involves face detection and recognition, with context analysis, which involves extraction of text or HTML features. Two aspects are explored to test the robustness of this approach: sensitivity of the retrieval performance to the context analysis parameters and automatic construction of a facial image database via automatic pseudofeedback. For the sensitivity testing, we reevaluate system performance while varying context analysis parameters. This is compared with a learning approach where association rules among textual feature values and image relevance are learned via the CN2 algorithm. A face database is constructed by clustering after an initial retrieval relying on face detection and context analysis alone. Experimental results indicate that the approach is robust for identifying and indexing person images.Y. Alp Aslandogan: Correspondence to:  相似文献

Unsupervised representation learning of unlabeled multimedia data is important yet challenging problem for their indexing, clustering, and retrieval. There have been many attempts to learn representation from a collection of unlabeled 2D images. In contrast, however, less attention has been paid to unsupervised representation learning for unordered sets of high-dimensional feature vectors, which are often used to describe multimedia data. One such example is set of local visual features to describe a 2D image. This paper proposes a novel algorithm called Feature Set Aggregator (FSA) for accurate and efficient comparison among sets of high-dimensional features. FSA learns representation, or embedding, of unordered feature sets via optimization using a combination of two training objectives, that are, set reconstruction and set embedding, carefully designed for set-to-set comparison. Experimental evaluation under three multimedia information retrieval scenarios using 3D shapes, 2D images, and text documents demonstrates efficacy as well as generality of the proposed algorithm.

The optimized distance-based access methods currently available for multidimensional indexing in multimedia databases have been developed based on two major assumptions: a suitable distance function is known a priori and the dimensionality of the image features is low. It is not trivial to define a distance function that best mimics human visual perception regarding image similarity measurements. Reducing high-dimensional features in images using the popular principle component analysis (PCA) might not always be possible due to the non-linear correlations that may be present in the feature vectors. We propose in this paper a fast and robust hybrid method for non-linear dimensions reduction of composite image features for indexing in large image database. This method incorporates both the PCA and non-linear neural network techniques to reduce the dimensions of feature vectors so that an optimized access method can be applied. To incorporate human visual perception into our system, we also conducted experiments that involved a number of subjects classifying images into different classes for neural network training. We demonstrate that not only can our neural network system reduce the dimensions of the feature vectors, but that the reduced dimensional feature vectors can also be mapped to an optimized access method for fast and accurate indexing. Content-based indexing of multimedia databases   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Content-based retrieval of multimedia database calls for content-based indexing techniques. Different from conventional databases, where data items are represented by a set of attributes of elementary data types, multimedia objects in multimedia databases are represented by a collection of features; similarity of object contents depends on context and frame of reference; and features of objects are characterized by multimodal feature measures. These lead to great challenges for content-based indexing. On the other hand, there are special requirements on content-based indexing: to support visual browsing, similarity retrieval, and fuzzy retrieval, nodes of the index should represent certain meaningful categories. That is to say that certain semantics must be added when performing indexing. ContIndex, the context-based indexing technique presented in this paper, is proposed to meet these challenges and special requirements. The indexing tree is formally defined by adapting a classification-tree concept. Horizontal links among nodes in the same level enhance the flexibility of the index. A special neural-network model, called Learning based on Experiences and Perspectives (FEP), has been developed to create node categories by fusing multimodal feature measures. It brings into the index the capability of self-organizing nodes with respect to certain context and frames of reference. An icon image is generated for each intermediate node to facilitate visual browsing. Algorithms have been developed to support multimedia object archival and retrieval using Contlndex  相似文献
