An analytic method of spatial phase modulation based on Fourier analysis is introduced for the design of a planar waveguide demultiplexer with a flat-top spectral response. An analytic formula for an etched diffraction grating demultiplexer is derived using the scalar diffraction theory. The spatial phase modulation is realized by slightly adjusting each grating facet's position according to the analytic formula to obtain a spectral response with a flat top and sharp transitions as well as a good dispersion characteristic. The analytic formula is characterized by two parameters: a transverse shift distance and a profile exponent for the phase modulation. A linear relation between the passband width and the transverse shift distance is given, and an optimal figure of merit of the spectral response is obtained by choosing an appropriate profile exponent. A numerical example of a typical SiO/sub 2/ etched diffraction grating demultiplexer is used to demonstrate the advantages of this method. 相似文献

We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of the performance of phased-array antennas steered by a single chirped fiber grating. Two approaches consisting of conventional and single-sideband (SSB) modulation techniques of the optical signal are presented in order to compare their performance and suitability for beamforming applications in microwave antennas. By using a 40-cm-long chirped grating, we measure the phase and amplitude response and calculate the corresponding radiation patterns to demonstrate wide-band operation and continuous spatial scanning properties of both configurations. 提出了利用啁啾光纤布拉格光栅(FBG)和马赫增德尔调制器产生三角形光脉冲的优化方案.方案采用FBG模拟单模光纤的色散特性,结合光载波抑制调制产生了三角形光脉冲, 并通过仿真分析,选择FBG的长度、调制深度、适当的折射率切趾函数对三角形光脉冲的线性特征进行了优化.仿真结果表明,在同一啁啾系数下,产生的三角形光脉冲的失真程度随啁啾光纤光栅的调制深度增大而增大,光栅长度、折射率切趾函数对三角形光脉冲的影响也比较明显.与现有系统相比,由于将FBG引入系统,省去长距离的光纤,优化方案系统结构更为简单,三角形光脉冲线性特征更好. 相似文献

A photonics true-time-delay system for phased array antenna beam steering employing a novel tunable chirped fiber grating delay line and a multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser source based on a sampled grating filter is proposed. The tunable chirped fiber grating, which act as a continuous time-delay element, is achieved by bending a uniform fiber Bragg grating bonded at a slant onto the lateral surface of a simply supported beam. This technique allows the dynamic control of the chirp rate and spectral width of the grating without center wavelength shift. By adjusting the chirp rate of the fiber grating via bend strain, this kind of tunable chirped fiber grating could achieve very low and adjustable delay times, therefore provides higher angle resolution for scanning microwave beam, even the wavelengths of laser source are fixed and un-tunable. The true-time-delay system using proposed tunable chirped fiber grating delay element and sampled grating based laser source is constructed and demonstrated experimentally. 相似文献

We report a theoretical investigation analyzing the threshold modes of a concentric-circle-grating (CCG) distributed feedback laser with a radially chirped first-order Bragg grating. A numerical coupled-mode analysis of a chirped CCG laser shows improved azimuthal mode discrimination for chirped gratings with linear, quadratic, and square-root radial dependence. Negatively chirped gratings, in which the grating period decreases with radius, result in improved threshold discrimination between the circularly symmetric fundamental mode and higher order modes; positively chirped gratings, in which the grating period increases with radius, result in decreased threshold for higher order modes in general. Also, the intensity for the fundamental mode at the grating center can be reduced by an order of magnitude using linearly chirped gratings 相似文献

This paper presents a chirped grating interrogator for fiber Bragg grating sensors. The interrogator uses the wavelength dependence of the phase group-delay response of a chirped fiber Bragg grating to determine the Bragg wavelength of the sensor. The sensitivity of the interrogator is determined by the selection of the grating length and the bandwidth. The experimental results demonstrated strain measurements over a range of more than 10 000 /spl mu/m per meter. Multiplexing can be achieved by using an arrayed-waveguide grating that allows the interrogation of more than one grating sensor with a single chirped grating. 相似文献

Gain competition often inhibits the simultaneous lasing of multiple longitudinal modes in homogeneously broadened laser systems. A stability analysis is developed to demonstrate that the two lowest order degenerate longitudinal modes in an index-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) laser will lase simultaneously when the index grating is chirped asymmetrically along the axis of the device. This chirped grating structure is shown to decrease the gain competition by reducing the spatial overlap between the degenerate modes. Stable mode beating between the two lowest order lasing modes results, and this beating produces high-frequency output self-pulsations which can be used for millimeter-wave and soliton pulse train generation. An exact closed-form expression for the output intensity of an antisymmetrically chirped index-coupled DFB laser, as a function of the unsaturated gain, is also derived. The effect of grating dispersion on pulse evolution in a photorefractive self-pumped phase conjugator is analyzed. The broadening factors and the time-dependent phases of self-pumped phase-conjugate pulses of unchirped and chirped Gaussian pulses are obtained. When the grating dispersion and the angular dispersion cancel the material dispersion, the self-pumped phase-conjugate pulse has a minimum width, which is determined by the first-order dispersion of the grating. The self-pumped phase conjugation of an unchirped Gaussian pulse broadens and is linearly chirped whereas the self-pumped phase conjugation of a chirped Gaussian pulse is compressed when the dispersion-induced chirp cancels the initial chirp 相似文献

研究了单模线性啁啾光纤光栅的偏振相关损耗特性。运用耦合模理论和传输矩阵分析法推出了反射光的偏振相关损耗,并模拟了光栅的反射谱和偏振相关损耗随光栅参数和双折射量的变化曲线。模拟显示双折射值的变化对啁啾光栅偏振相关损耗的影响非常显著, 尤其是在带边比较陡峭时。啁啾光栅的偏振相关损耗也受光栅的啁啾系数和调制深度的影响。这表明线性啁啾光栅的偏振相关损耗不光依赖光栅双折射量,还依赖其啁啾系数等其他参数。实验结果与理论模拟基本吻合。 相似文献

The characteristics of chirped and phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings have been investigated by the use of transfer matrix formulation. While the characteristics of a chirped and phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating are the same as those of non- chirped one in some important aspects, both the reflection and transmission windows of a chirped and phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating can be broadened in a wide range. Therefore, chirped and phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings will have applications in WDM or DWDM optical communication systems.
